eleitl··on Debian reconsiders init-system diversity
> when systemd is so many things

Because it was originally advertized as an optional init replacement. The acrimonious debates were because a number of people did not believe that's all is going to be, given the history of its designers.

Of course, nowadays many people would flat-out deny that systemd was sold as an init replacement, and claim that what you see was the original intention all along.

eleitl··on Debian reconsiders init-system diversity
Exactly what we expected. Systemd has become a hard dependancy, and is continuing to branch out into unrelated systems causing unnecessary changes and bugs due to poor code quality of the maintainers.

I continue to standartize on Debian VM containers for infrastructure, but only because of lack of alternatives.

eleitl··on Collapse OS
> but catastrophic enough that all the plants on this list are destroyed or rendered unusable

All the fabs on your list are fairly modern, and it is easy to see how they would be impossible to maintain in a Tainter-style collapse.

I would be looking into what you can do with ~1 um processes, which are currently accessible to amateurs. E.g. designs like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11720289

One hour is quite enough for taxi-type and drone delivery.

Also, you could use structural batteries, which would substitute for part of the plane structure.

> They're also clearly doing the exact thing they're accusing China of themselves here.

Indeed, it's widely known that Cisco/Juniper is pretty much in bed with the US intelligence, and so is Microsoft.

It is also not very smart to antagonize a world power that you also need for a lot of critical components, including lots of modern fabs.

eleitl··on Twisted graphene has become the big thing in physics
None of this applicable for hard experimental sciences like physics and chemistry. You can't shortcut bench time, especially since it involves a lot of trial and error. And sometimes it doesn't work out, at all.
eleitl··on Trains are more efficient and less polluting than other transportation modes
A pedelec (human-electric hybrid) on dirt roads is considerably more energy efficient (Wh/km/passenger) than trains even before factoring in the embedded energy of the vast infrastructure rail needs.

It is, if you consider selective enforcement.

eleitl··on Germany to make it a crime to run a Tor node or website
Do you have your setup documented somewhere? It sounds intriguing.
eleitl··on Germany to make it a crime to run a Tor node or website
> he law is drafted to close a loophole where you can open a black market site

The chance is pretty good, given their recent track record.

eleitl··on Germany to make it a crime to run a Tor node or website
> he law is drafted to close a loophole where you can open a black market site

The point is that the law says any Tor onion service market is illegal, by definition.

And it's obviously only a first step before outlawing anonymization for the general public, including a ban on encryption.

eleitl··on Google Takes Its First Steps Toward Killing the URL

I've started using Thunderbird with Gmail again. This is the first step to moving the bulk of my email activity to my self-hosted mail server.

And, of course, I'm also ditching Chrome for Firefox (and Tor Browser) as well.

Well done, Google. You finally forced my hand.

It ain't hysteria if you're in Germany, and a private individual or a nonprofit (e.V.). Due to specialities of German law third parties can serve you legal writs for hundreds or thousands of EURos.
