eightails··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
To play devil's advocate, I wonder if it can really be said that when you watch a youtube video you have been

> invited to witness in its entirety free of charge

when you consider advertising. It could be argued that when you watch a monetized youtube video you are being invited to view the video in exchange for also viewing advertisements as a form of payment.

I hope that you're right though, and that we get a ruling in favour of being able to make copies for fair-use.

eightails··on 1Password for Linux beta
Is there any reason not to host a Keepass database on any generic cloud service? That's what I'm doing at the moment. I've never encountered any sync issues or conflicts, and take backups every now and then in case that happens.
eightails··on FreePN: Open-source peer-to-peer VPN service
They tried to promote the launch of this service on a bunch of linux-related subreddits 6 months ago, and I wasn't much of a fan of the concept or the way they advertised it, in skipping over the p2p nature of the system.

Their answer to the question of 'what happens when a bad actor has their illegal activity routed through my connection' seemed illogical. They claimed that as more people signed up, the proportion of bad actors would decrease [0], which makes no sense to me.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what methods they have taken to stop a bad actor from collecting packets from other users that are routed through the bad actors exit node.

The worst thing IMO is the way it's being presented and marketed. The impression the website gives is that its just like all other VPNs but free, which is very misleading.

Love the design, though I think the noise it makes when updating the display would drive me crazy if I had to listen to it once a minute.
eightails··on Raspberry Pi 4: Hardware accelerated video decoding (GPU) in Chromium
Try running `firefox MOZ_LOG=PlatformDecoderModule:5`, navigating to a video and checking that the decode is being done though VA-API. Depending on your GPU, you might have to use something like enhanced-264ify to force Youtube to use formats that are supported by hardware decode.

eightails··on Why I stopped reading HN (2010)
It's interesting reading this because I've recently been trying to wean myself off Reddit for the similar reasons, and one of the communities I have used to replace it has been HN -- because (in my experience) HN generally tends to avoid the issues in the way discussions play out characterised by this article.

It's worth remembering that a forum completely devoid of 'bad arguments' is realistically never going to happen. I guess (as the author notes) it's a matter of 'personal thresholds'.

eightails··on Zoom Acquires Keybase
I think that while both countries have the technology to facilitate censorship and oppression, the US is much more careful about how they do it. China isn't afraid to use their control over information to assist the oppression of Uighurs in 're-education' camps for example.
