egonschiele··on Mario and Earendil
Armin is pretty well-known in the tech space. He has contributed a ton to open source and generally seems like a fairly principled person. I think this may be the first case where you turn out to be wrong :)
egonschiele··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
Just wanted to say what an incredible person you are! Catch and Kill and the related reporting was awesome too!
egonschiele··on Ohm's Peg-to-WASM Compiler
I have been very curious to try Ohm. I'm currently using a hand-rolled parser combinator library, but Ohm looks slick. The online editor is nice too https://ohmjs.org/editor/
egonschiele··on AI isn't killing jobs, it's 'unbundling' them into lower-paid chunks
> The human is left doing whatever the machine can't, often a narrower slice of the original role

I haven't seen anyone talk about AI and its impact on flow yet. It's pretty easy for me to achieve a flow state while coding without AI, but with AI, I'm not so sure. I spend my time managing multiple Claude instances as they work on different tasks, and there's no time to go really deep into anything.

Flow was such a productivity boost for me. Even though Claude definitely helps me finish tasks quicker, I've started wondering how much quicker it actually is, vs getting into flow.

egonschiele··on Coding My Handwriting
This is very cool. Based on the title, I thought this would end with an example of using this font for code. I'd still be interested in seeing an example of that.
egonschiele··on Malus – Clean Room as a Service
Good idea, but as several comments here suggest, the time when this sort of thing could be taken as satire is gone. I promise you there are multiple people here thinking that this is a good idea. I predict that within a year we will see a service that does exactly this.
egonschiele··on GPT-5.4
The actual card is here https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-5-4-thinking/introdu... the link currently goes to the announcement.
egonschiele··on Show HN: Govbase – Follow a bill from source text to news bias to social posts
This looks super useful, but why hide your identity? There's nothing on the website about who you are and I notice you're using a new HN account.
egonschiele··on Show HN: Govbase – Follow a bill from source text to news bias to social posts
I subscribed. Awesome idea and execution. Hope I see more apps working to make this stuff more accessible!
egonschiele··on Little Free Library
I feel like they are often unwanted discards... but we have one and we try to put interesting books in there. Recently gave away my entire Harry Potter series.
egonschiele··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
Someone has to stay to fight the shit happening in the US! The problem won't just go away if people move.
egonschiele··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
Heck yeah, so happy to see Anthropic fighting. This is what real leadership looks like. I'd love to see the same from Google and OpenAI.
egonschiele··on Facebook is cooked
So much of Reddit is brain rot now, it's unbelievable. A sample of subreddits: /r/memzy, /r/evilwhenthe, /r/JustMemesForUs.

Seriously, if I was in charge of these companies, I'd shut this shit down. I know it drives clicks, but do we want to live in a world where people consume this garbage? And not just a few people!

egonschiele··on The only moat left is money?
Coding agents are good, but once the complexity is high they're not good enough. Eventually your agent won't be able to make changes to your code base without introducing bugs with every change. In my experience, the agents aren't very good with abstractions yet, and no amount of testing can completely paper over that problem. So yes, the industry is changing dramatically and at a breathtaking rate, but I don't think money is the only moat left.
egonschiele··on Show HN: Jemini – Gemini for the Epstein Files
Brilliant. This is like the internet at its peak (to me) where it was all about building neat things and helping people. Just a bunch of engineers saying they are not planning to look away from the Epstein files. More projects like this, please.
egonschiele··on Show HN: Free alternative to Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, and Monologue
Really good to know Handy exists; it's the first I'm hearing about it. I use a speech-to-text app that I built for myself, and I know at least one co-worker pays $10 a month for (I think) Wispr. I think it's possible there was no intention to market, and the creator simply didn't know about Handy, just like me.

> The DHS asked Meta for their names and details on September 11, and the users were notified about it on October 3

Wow, so this was before all the ICE activity in MN blew up. My paranoid brain is wondering what they are doing with the data. Anyone here working on something like this (maybe at a company like Palantir) and willing to tell your story in a throwaway account?

egonschiele··on Trump revokes landmark ruling that greenhouse gases endanger public health
Truly maddening how we have not been able to come together as one during this critical time.
egonschiele··on How watercolor brushes are made (2015)
I spent about six months working on adding new pigments to my palette, and his research was invaluable. Highly recommended for anyone who is intermediate at watercolour. For beginners, he has a page that recommends some beginner palettes, which is quite useful.
egonschiele··on ICE using Palantir tool that feeds on Medicaid data
Not just Minnesota, they've asked all states for voter registration lists and ballots from previous elections. 11 states have complied so far.

egonschiele··on Your app subscription is now my weekend project
I've been using a Wispr equivalent I made myself since 2023. It's wild to me that people pay for it, and I've wondered if I should try to monetize what I use. It is not as slick and polished, but provides essentially the same service: better speech-to-text than the built-in speech-to-text for Macs.
egonschiele··on Elo – A data expression language which compiles to JavaScript, Ruby, and SQL
Maybe the most incredible part – did Claude write a recursive descent parser from scratch for this? https://github.com/enspirit/elo/blob/9f07fefcdf65c169089f123...

Not that it's super complex, but I'm surprised it didn't pick up an npm package. I wrote tarsec[1] and have been eyeing ohmjs[2]. And of course nearley is a classic.

egonschiele··on Deno has made its PyPI distribution official
For those less in the know: is it for convenience? Because most systems have a package manager that can install Python, correct? But `pip` is more familiar to some?
egonschiele··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (Jan 2026)
A parser combinator library for TypeScript: http://github.com/egonSchiele/tarsec

And a game I made with my son, similar to Chips Challenge: https://reddot.adit.io

egonschiele··on One year of keeping a tada list
The list has helped me plan as its forced me to cut things, and just admit I won't have time to do them. For example, I took about fifty books off my shelf and to the little free library. They've been sitting there for years.
egonschiele··on One year of keeping a tada list
Unfortunately a pre-req would be me severely downgrading what I think is worth writing down as an accomplishment, or switching to writing down meaningless tasks (though that IS what the original tada list idea recommends)
egonschiele··on One year of keeping a tada list
It's a good idea that I might try, though I do like being able to see exactly what I did each day!
egonschiele··on Show HN: Onlyrecipe 2.0 – I added all features HN requested – 4 years later
Funny timing, I've been building something like this for my own use -- but your feature list has everything I wanted :) How much do you charge? Would love to know without downloading an app
egonschiele··on The Death of Arduino?
esp32 already exists, so there's a hardware alternative. What's the primary issue -- is it the lack of competition to the Arduino IDE? I have dabbled in Arduino but don't know enough to understand, but my impression was on the hardware side there are already alternatives that are better.

Obviously not discounting what a huge blow this is (and right when I was planning to explore Arduino more), but practically speaking, what can we do to help?

egonschiele··on An Illustrated Introduction to Linear Algebra, Chapter 2: The Dot Product
I think this is a reasonable expectation. I'm writing about the dot product and there is a geometric visualization for dot products, so it's fair to expect that. As I said in this comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45802969) I focused on teaching the reader the bare minimum they would need to know to get to matrix multiplication.

I use illustrations for a lot of other things though. I use them to pace my posts, to call out things that are especially important, to reinforce written ideas with images, and to give the reader's eye a place to rest.

If you are looking for graphs, this video about the dot product from 3B1B may be more your speed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyGKycYT2v0
