efnx··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
I recently joined the zcash team, but there are other groups out there doing good through open source.

The cypherpunks are still here, working hard everyday, but we’re a small group.
efnx··on Paracetamol disrupts early embryogenesis by cell cycle inhibition
I’m not a doctor but I’m pretty sure ibuprofen is _not_ acetaminophen.
efnx··on Show HN: Luminal – Open-source, search-based GPU compiler
Cool! How is this project different from the tuning process in TVM?
efnx··on GPT-5: Overdue, overhyped and underwhelming. And that's not the worst of it
I totally agree. That would be great. I think the problem with that is LLMs don’t know what they don’t know. It’s arguable they even “know” anything!
efnx··on Ergonomic keyboarding with the Svalboard: a half-year retrospective
As a datahand user I can tell you that is indeed the case. But 99% of the time (likely more) I’m typing at home.

Why deny yourself the pleasure of a nice typing experience the majority of the time?

efnx··on Visa and Mastercard are getting overwhelmed by gamer fury over censorship
And zcash would be better than Monero for privacy reasons.
efnx··on The Minecraft game score unexpectedly became big business for its composer
Disasterpeace! He did “It Follows”, “Marcel the Shell” and the OST to Fez, Hyperlidht Drifter and more.
efnx··on Proposed NOAA Budget Kills Program Designed to Prevent Satellite Collisions
Maybe you should run, then? It is a government of the people, as they say.
efnx··on Error handling in Rust
`Result` is just `Either` by another name, and the main idea is to use sum and product types as the result of a computation instead of throwing, which turns error handling into business as usual. The `Result` type and `Error` trait really are orthogonal, and as soon as the `Try` trait is stabilized I think we'll see some good improvements.
efnx··on Weird Expressions in Rust
Well now we’re just talking about personal preferences, then.
efnx··on Weird Expressions in Rust
I’ve found rust to be an ML in C’s clothing.

The main difference from other MLs is the lack of higher kinded types, so it’s difficult to express things like Functor, Monad, Arrow, etc

efnx··on -2000 Lines of code
I’d be wary of doing any but the most obvious optimisations without profiling. This goes for humans or AI.
efnx··on Living beings emit a faint light that extinguishes upon death, study
Anyone who has seen the movie Predator already knows this ;)
efnx··on FastVLM: Efficient vision encoding for vision language models
That and the ability to hold on to knowledge.
efnx··on Matt Godbolt sold me on Rust by showing me C++
Yes. I prefer ‘snafu’ but there are a few, and you could always roll your own.
efnx··on Migrating away from Rust
I think this is a problem of using the right abstractions.

Rust gamedev is the Wild West, and frontier development incurs the frontier tax. You have to put a lot of work into making an abstraction, even before you know if it’s the right fit.

Other “platforms” have the benefit of decades more work sunk into finding and maintaining the right abstractions. Add to that the fact that Rust is an ML in sheep’s clothing, and that games and UI in FP has never been a solved problem (or had much investment even), it’s no wonder Rust isn’t ready. We haven’t even agreed on the best solutions to many of these problems in FP, let alone Rust specifically!

Anyway, long story short, it takes a very special person to work on that frontier, and shipping isn’t their main concern.

efnx··on 'Tech entrepreneur took our money but failed to deliver our startup dreams'
Agreed, either you get bit by your choice early on and can’t ship, or you ship and get bit later when trying to maintain the puddle of guck you just shipped.

If you don’t know how to do it, you don’t know how to do it. Learn how to do it.

efnx··on DOGE worker’s code supports NLRB whistleblower
I think Trump could simply pardon them, unfortunately.
efnx··on There are two types of dishwasher people
They’re just talking about the energy your 12 year old nephew has.
efnx··on Rust CUDA Project
I’m a rust-GPU maintainer and can say that shared types on host and GPU are definitely intended. We’ve mostly been focused on graphics, but are shifting efforts to more general compute. There’s a lot of work though, and we all have day jobs - we’re looking for help. If you’re interested in helping you should say so at our GitHub.
efnx··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
What about that guy who got deported to El Salvador even though he was legally here and the court had also ordered he not be sent back to El Salvador for his own protection? I’m pretty sure the admin admitted it was a mistake then refused to bring him back.
efnx··on Pitfalls of Safe Rust
And why is that? I already don’t agree, but I’d love to hear your take.
efnx··on Crabtime: Zig’s Comptime in Rust
Prototypal inheritance can be pretty awkward and complicated. It’s evident in that few young JS devs ever use it, and many don’t even know about it!
efnx··on The Calculated Typer
From the abstract it sounds a bit like https://brianmckenna.org/blog/type_annotation_cofree, which is a great read.
efnx··on Pollution Map
The one example I saw was a bottle in SF.

It looks like individuals report trash in an area? I’m not sure why I would use this. Is this hooked up to anything else?

efnx··on [dead]
Funny how the republicans complain and campaign on all this stuff and when it gets worse on their watch it’s no longer an issue. “Gods work”. Rich.
efnx··on Sam Bankman-Fried thrown into solitary over Tucker Carlson interview: report
I reflexively agree, but what other folks have blantantly switched like this that you know of?
efnx··on Leaked VA memo calls for up to 83,000 layoffs to reduce workforce to 2019 levels
This is known as "death by attrition". It's generally not a successful strategy.
efnx··on Leaked VA memo calls for up to 83,000 layoffs to reduce workforce to 2019 levels
The attitude comes from a point of analysis, and the argument that follows is that we can save by cutting spending in specific areas that we overspend in (military) and we could rake in lots more in taxes by making the rich _pay their fare share_.

The current firing of government workers is about political alignment, not about cost. Cost is a pretext.
