eerikkivistik··on Show HN: 400-Line Binance CryptoCurrency Bot
Hi

So first of all, thank you for sharing your work, I'm sure it was a lot of fun building it and making it work!

If you'll indulge me, I'll point out a few thoughts about application logic that handles money.

First of all, money related logic should be using fixed point mathematics in all places. In the case of EUR/USD fixed to 2 points behind the decimal point and in case of BTC and others, somewhere around 9-16 (can't be bothered to look it up atm). There is a cumulative error that is produced when using floating point variables. I'll be happy to share a link to a discussion, if you want!

The second thought I had was about using MongoDB for this use case. While it is great for getting started and MongoDB has made great strides at improving safety, it is still a suboptimal choice for handling financial transactions (logs or otherwise). I will also be happy to clarify why, if someone wants to discuss the matter further.

eerikkivistik··on We do not use foreign keys (2016)
I'll jump in here as well in case someone is considering throwing out foreign keys due to this. I would argue, never make compromises like this unless you have a scaling problem that is so bad, that there is no other way around it. Don't get me wrong, there are places where this is the case, but 99% of software does not have this issue. Use foreign keys and save yourself the headache in the future. Also bear in mind, that if you ever hit that scaling problem, you are making so much money, that it's a nice problem to have.
eerikkivistik··on Lahja – A generic event bus implementation written in Python
Any chance the name is a play on words from the Estonian word "Lahja" as in light-weight?
eerikkivistik··on $10k Later, an Apple Store Genius Diagnoses a $0 MacBook Pro Problem
Yeah, so this happens to me about twice a week. Most recently yesterday morning. Don't need a flashlight anymore though, got used to the gesture of blindly moving my pointer to my avatar and clicking on it.
eerikkivistik··on 3D Modelling in a Browser
I'll plug our product here as well https://3dc.io
eerikkivistik··on HeidiSQL – GUI client for MariaDB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL
Can back this up, TablePlus is really well implemented and a pleasure to use!
eerikkivistik··on Ask HN: Online banks where I can open account worldwide?
The problem with Estonia is that I think you still need to travel here in person to open a bank account. The KYC laws are pretty strict. Source – I'm Estonian.
eerikkivistik··on Baltimore police will pay consultant $176k to maintain Lotus Notes system
Thank you. This was all I was looking for.
eerikkivistik··on Baltimore police will pay consultant $176k to maintain Lotus Notes system
Answered another comment with the same, but just in case: I didn't make it clear enough I was poorly executing a joke.
eerikkivistik··on Baltimore police will pay consultant $176k to maintain Lotus Notes system
Yeah, I said it in jest, have rewritten software myself for the same reason, it is an undertaking.
eerikkivistik··on Baltimore police will pay consultant $176k to maintain Lotus Notes system
If anyone could provide a summary, seems GDPR has really made it hard for some outlets to render text (editors note: this was meant as a light-hearted joke, not ignorance)

eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
I think we made the same point at the same time :D
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Well yes and no. Sure, micro is a large part of Dota, but planning and coordination is worth as much. So reaction time gives you an advantage in one spectrum, but I think the real benchmark will be macro scale planning and coordination. Same applies to the Starcraft AI competition, where the bots still lose due to macro planning.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
I think the idea there was to take tower hits so they can keep pushing without taking hero damage. And delaying until the next creep wave arrives. Not sure it had much effect in this game, but it can be situationally useful.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
I think the model itself could probably run on a PC with 64gb of RAM/VRAM (Well okay, it would be an unorthodox personal computer, I guess my point is, you could probably fit it in a Single computer, not one you have at home though). Training it definitely not possible without a large cluster.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Yeah, I was thinking more in the lines of the aftermath, after diving – getting stuck in the forest behind the enemy tower. But you are correct, they seemed hella determined to get that Slark kill!
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
I watched the game against audience members, and the bots seemed to overextend at times. Also weird courier scouting glitches (which makes sense if all couriers are currently invulnerable for the purpose of this generation of bots). Another funny thing was watching them use smokes for no apparent reason.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Pro game starting in a few minutes.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Last time I looked, I did not find any published trained nets on it. As far as I know, the custom build of Dota they use isn't public either. It will most likely change in the near future though, would be the next logical step for the OpenAI team as per the goal of their organization.
eerikkivistik··on OpenAI plays DOTA against former professionals in an hour
Pro game against OpenAI starting in 2 minutes.
eerikkivistik··on 4D toys
That looks incredible. Do you know if the developer has published any papers or code on the subject?
eerikkivistik··on 4D toys
What tools were used to build this I wonder?
eerikkivistik··on GitLab Web IDE
So I have a question. I played around with Web IDE-s a few years ago and they felt really sluggish back then. If anyone is actively using one, how are they now, viable?
eerikkivistik··on Show HN: Dilay – A free 3D sculpting application
I think the UI needs a bit of work, but you can already subtract shapes and also extrude 2D shapes. There is a draw tool in the bottom left menu. There is also a subtract button in the tools, it works by subtracting the selected shapes from the unselected ones.

Edit: Yeah, designed for mobile/tablets first. Pretty fun there.

eerikkivistik··on Show HN: Dilay – A free 3D sculpting application
Edit: I seem to be in a mood today, sorry for the rash response.
eerikkivistik··on Show HN: Dilay – A free 3D sculpting application
Thanks. Considering doing something similar for our product and add sculpting, this is one of the issues that popped into my head when I was playing around with the idea.
eerikkivistik··on Show HN: Dilay – A free 3D sculpting application
Really cool stuff! I was wondering, how are you solving the issues of sculpting low polygon primitives (do you dynamically subdivide or?).
eerikkivistik··on Ask HN: I hacked an ecommerce website, what do I do now?
I would even suggest that the lawyer contact the company on your behalf without revealing your identity. I've seen these things go sideways and if you really want to disclose, make sure your identity remains anonymous until they explicitly agree not to pursue any legal action. I'll also add that they might behave irrationally - it can take many forms (denial of a security issue, legal action, defamation of character). But I might be a bit cynical as well, been down this road in the past.
eerikkivistik··on Wi-Fi alliance announces mesh networking standard
You can always count on HN to find like-minded people. Walked down the same road around 2 years ago. I think if FireChat open-sourced its mesh networking code, we could make some real progress on this. Mostly because writing a mesh networking layer is a project in itself and skipping that would go a long way.

I was thinking of using mesh networking for simple stuff at large events, like locating friends during a music festival (no cell reception).

eerikkivistik··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
You can give https://3dc.io a shot. Disclosure: developer here.
