eecc··on Do not mistake a resilient global economy for populist success
You do realize that the debt/gdp ratio is a ratio?

If you cripple the gdp through austerity policies (killing borrowing to chase the “responsibility dream”) the fiscal multiplier becomes a ruinous curse.

Of course, pissing money into a spending bonfire, driving inflation with excess liquidity, isn’t going to help; bit it’s just as bad as crippling growth by holding it back for lack of capital injection

If a foreign power takes over your country and changes the laws in ways that conflict with the previous constitution, there’s a break in sovereignty continuity so your options are: 1. Pledge to the new authority and move on 2. Keep your word on your previous pledge and resist
eecc··on Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE
Whatever ICE claims, the murderer broke protocol and whatever excuse they’ll try, surely “feared for his life” doesn’t count.

Operating manuals state that officers cannot use deadly force to stop a vehicle, even if the vehicle itself is used as a weapon, if they can get out of its way instead.

This is clearly a case of an untrained, unhinged, far-right militant, itching for an opportunity to fire and kill a “fucking bitch” (seems ICE is leaving the indefensible idiot out to dry, and prepared the ground by releasing the video from the murderer’s phone).

It’s a hate crime, pure and simple.

Yeah but it wasn’t the unelected bureaucrats that fucked the EU. It was the German attitude towards debt and the redistribution of surplus. The Eurogroup sheepishly followed whatever Austerity fever dream of Schauble, tanked the Greek economy to teach every other Med country a lesson and by doing so, crippled any chance of post 2009 recovery

Well, that rent and the debts incurred to finance consumption is also keeping the profits up and thus stonks valuations

yeah, looks like the victim knew how to drive and didn't want to dry-steer her tyres. What a farcical tragedy

That’s the same flawed reasoning Kirk flaunted when discussing gun laws. It ultimately proved to be wrong; as in it’s all fine and “Vulcanian Logical” until you or your close ones become the statistic

Christ what an ugly kludge. Just spend a weekend in Amsterdam and check out the Tenways and the Vanmoof roaming the streets for an idea how to do it, if not right, at least decently
eecc··on US car repossessions surge as more Americans default on auto loans
I still don’t understand the point of all this exercise. In the long run, without a fairer redistribution of wealth within US society (which isn’t going to happen with these polices and the politicians pushing them) forcing re-shoring will still result in higher prices overall: expensive Made in USA products, and expensive imports due to a weak dollar. So why?
eecc··on US car repossessions surge as more Americans default on auto loans
If manufacturing is to return to the USA, it will be as fully automated as technically possible. So forget about jobs, there won't remotely be as many as needed to "reboot the working class"
eecc··on Free software hasn't won
Careful, recently someone made a similar argument around gun-laws in the US, and it didn't go well for him...

Oh nice, thanks for mentioning UGREEN. I had a quick look at the website and it looks fairly cheap. I wouldn't trust their software but the base system comes on an MMC, does it mean I can flash it with TrueNAS or Unraid?

I think you're exaggerating. There are several ways an LLM can discern the applicability of certain data to a context (document metadata such as TLD, cross check with applicable authoritative codes and regulations, be wary of random forum posts.)

I'm pretty sure an LLM can provide pretty refined answers given some reasonable context. i.e. I want to rewire a socked in my apartment, which is in London, UK. What do I need to do?

eecc··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
Well no, not really. I’m replying in the context of the parent comment, that was painting a scenario where the GPT would reply with information relevant to different countries.

It doesn’t need to be advanced prompting, it’s enough to provide enough information and ask to “provide advice relevant to the current and applicable codes and regulations”

It’s the first question a forum dweller would reply to a poorly articulated post.

eecc··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
poor prompting then. One should narrow down the question to the particular circumstance it should apply.
eecc··on Where's Firefox going next?
How on point.

In my limited career I have been in several projects whose plight didn't make any sense -- with all the smart people and the effort poured over them, how could the disaster continue to unfold! -- until I realized failure rather than success was the goal.

eecc··on EU Eyes Ditching Microsoft Azure for France's OVHcloud
I have it directly from European CTO’s and founders that in Europe every country is its own market — not just rules and regulations, but culturally — significantly affecting consumer behavior.

In the US a launch is a launch into a market in excess of 300M potential customers, in EU you have to lather-rinse-repeat 27 times

eecc··on Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant for essay writing task
Frankly, working with an LLM has forced me to explain my problems in a more articulate and precise manner, avoiding unnecessary information that could interfere with a proper framing of the issue.

It is said that one doesn’t truly understand something unless they can explain it concisely.

I think being forced to do so, is an upside to using LLMs

Poster laments the lack of a quality folding keyboard.

Well, though not in production any more, there is one that is absolutely perfect: Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard.

You can still find it on eBay, and it’s unfathomable — though perfectly in-character — for Microsoft to have terminated it.
