Hi,

I'm Edwin Yip. I mainly develop in Delphi. My newest and key project is (https://docxmanager.com). Basically it helps authors who uses Microsoft Word organize and plan their writings, and optionally generate modern-looking websites out of their documents.

Wait! Am I one of your friends?! ;) Reading this comment and the replies made me understand that, despite country/culture differences, we are the same :)
edwinyzh··on The unreasonable effectiveness of print debugging
Wow, by looking at this screenshot (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hlissner/doom-emacs/screen...), is doom emacs a terminal/console program or a GUI program?!
edwinyzh··on Why the United States has the best research universities
Yes, so obvious.
edwinyzh··on Creating a minimalist blog with Jekyll Now
@patates, Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I actually noticed the issue, and I do want to address the issue with an appropriate approach (but it still needs more thoughts). Of all the css frameworks tailwind is definitely the best fit as far as I see it, thanks to it's "utility first" concept.

For Windows users, DocxManager (https://docxmanager.com) the Word-document-based static site generator which supports S/FTP uploading (and S3 soon) will be expanded to be a tabbed markdown editor in the near future.

Yes, I'm the developer ;)

edwinyzh··on SQLite is not a toy database
Yes, this is exactly how mORMot (https://github.com/synopse/mORMot) implements the DB server with SQLite.
edwinyzh··on SQLite is not a toy database
Yes, that's a very useful feature to extend the functionalities of SQLite. mORMot (https://github.com/synopse/mORMot) added JSON support to SQLite even before JSON1 was introduced.
edwinyzh··on SQLite is not a toy database
I love that I don't have to define a length for the 'varchar' columns and I can store strings of any length to those columns ;)
edwinyzh··on SQLite is not a toy database
Can you share more details? Why Mozilla opposed SQLite?
edwinyzh··on Building a full-text search engine in 150 lines of Python code
But SQLite's FTS5 has no support for the `offsets` function...

Now I'm interested in the text editor Dr. wrote!
edwinyzh··on Why OO Sucks by Joe Armstrong (2000)
Try tell that to Anders the creator of C#, TypeScript and Delphi, to the creator of Java, to the creator of Python. Thanks.
edwinyzh··on Show HN: Sorted CSS Colors – Sort the named CSS colors in a nice way
It's neat! Slightly offtopic - I saw one of the colors named "peru", does the name has any connection with Peru the country?
edwinyzh··on Flameshot – Simple, powerful screenshot tool for all major operating systems
Great to have discovered this nice tool! After fiddle it for a while, it doesn't seem to be able to select specific window and capture?

The most powerful and stable web framework is mORMot, it supports both FPC and Delphi. Here is its version 2 in development: https://github.com/synopse/mORMot2

I use Delphi all the time, IMHO, it's the best tool for Windows desktop app development - concise language, blazing fast compile time, easy UI design, flexible UI framework, all-in-one IDE, and so on. It's such a joy to me :)

And here is my new desktop software written in Delphi: https://docxmanager.com/

edwinyzh··on How do I safely store my files?
What low power server do you mean here? I use a similar setup, but I'm on Windows with a folder-to-folder sync tool to sync to an external HDD which is connected through USB. I do have a 3rd HDD do make occasionally cold standalone backups.
edwinyzh··on NovelWriter 1.0 – A markdown-like editor for writing novels
Yes, almost publishers accept Word documents only, and that's why I've built DocxManager (https://docxmanager.com/) on top of Microsoft Word. ;)

Basically, it's an outliner/corkboard/project manager for all kinds writers who uses Word.

edwinyzh··on Hotwire: HTML over the Wire
I guess this is similar to htmx.org (was intercooler.js) which I like a lot! Will learn more about it later and I'm glad similar idea is getting more popular!

edwinyzh··on How I Manage My Random Daily Notes
Do you mean browsing the notes in chronological order AND in thematic order (something like an outline?) in the SAME TIME? I'm currently doing a re-designing of my DocxManager (outliner based on Word) and you did inspire me!
edwinyzh··on Four Types of Kanji (2019)
闆 doeshas no pronunciation similarity to 品,in ancient Chinese, you can find that with Cantonese which is close to the official languages in some ancient times.
edwinyzh··on FrontPage: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The goal's not completely achieved yet, but my project's goal is to turn Microsoft Word into a WordPress like site builder for ordinary users. Here is a quick GIF demo: https://docxmanager.com/features/website-generator.html
edwinyzh··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
My Gmail has important data, fear of losing the email data is why I have developed GmailKeeper (now become: https://OwnMyCopy.com).

It was the 2nd Gmail backup software in the world when it's first released in 2006.

edwinyzh··on If Not SPAs, What?
Me too! As a developer mostly with desktop software development experiences, htmx is so much straightforward to understand and easy to code, it's a perfect chose for me to implement pages such as 'License Upgrade', 'License Renew', and so on: https://docxmanager.com/miscpages/upgrade-to-standard-from-b...
edwinyzh··on I am seriously considering going back to desktop computers
I use ThinkPad T450 with added SSD drive, external monitor and mouse - the keyboard is great IMHO.
edwinyzh··on Delphi 2 can compile large .pas files at 1.2M lines per second
Why? See how Free Pascal Compiler is alive: https://github.com/graemeg/freepascal/commits/master And its IDE: https://github.com/graemeg/lazarus/commits/upstream

And we have new versions of Delphi very year, with a free Community edition: https://beta.embarcadero.com/products/delphi/starter

PS, I myself write all my software with Delphi, and this is the newest one: https://docxmanager.com - something that turns MS Word into something like WordPress :)

edwinyzh··on Things I Was Wrong About: Types
How about a language that supports both strong typed data type and dynamic data types? Not sure about other language, but Free Pascal and Delphi support both of them.
