edwinyzh··on Improving GitHub Code Search
Well, in the past I've tried Sourcegraph several times, but it never give me experiences that match the was-dead-many-years-ago Google Code Search. I wish the new github code search does that.
edwinyzh··on Show HN: P2P remote desktop – an alternative to TeamViewer / AnyDesk
Re. remote desktop stability, not sure if my experience as someone censored by the GFW makes any sense, but when my RDP to oversea Windows host become unstable, Jump Desktop gives me fast and stable connection, and for free. Their program is lightweight and fast too.
edwinyzh··on Show HN: Windows 2000 on Docker
I agree too! It's the BEST!
edwinyzh··on The metaverse is bullshit
I wonder that too, since I didn't watch closely nor use facebook frequently. IIRC there was a Russian company was hot since it has a bunch of popular games based on the FB platform.
edwinyzh··on GitHub Copilot available for JetBrains and Neovim
I was just wondering this
edwinyzh··on Show HN: Flowrift – Tailwind CSS UI Blocks
Great! It must be very useful! What's the license of the copied code?

>> Another thing that made it tricky is that a lot of what he says sounds totally >> normal for modern American English, it's just a little... poetic? The bit about >> fathers and grandchildren would fit right into a modern speech or essay, >> for example. I might find it odd coming from a friend in casual conversation though.

Oh, I had the same feeling. And guess what? From time to time, I got emails from people who write like that, and others are in other styles. Some write emails that are very "user-friendly" for non-native English speakers, some write poetic sentences.

If you ask me why? I have a product mainly for writers (https://docxmanager.com) ;)

Oh Thanks! I can feel the differences!
edwinyzh··on Farmer born in 1842 talks about life and change (1929) [video]
Hi, as someone who has a very limited knowledge in the English language, I'd be very curious to see the old farm's talk be rewritten with modern way of speaking/word choice? I'll appreciate it!
edwinyzh··on Back Orifice (1998)
Holy... I had the similar idea and have just implemented it (https://sitemakertools.com/vps-bootstrapper/), but for Linux!
edwinyzh··on For First Time, Half of Americans Favor Defending Taiwan If China Invades
Search youtube for this kind of videos.
edwinyzh··on Another free CA as an alternative to Let's Encrypt
It' great to have alternatives although I need nothing more than what Let's Encrypt offers.

PS, do you think there is a chance for a similar service to be available in the future, but for EXE file signing ;)

edwinyzh··on Debian 11
Great! And my free GUI admin panel will support it!

https://sitemakertools.com/vps-bootstrapper (runs on workstation, only SSH is needed, no need to pre-install anything on the server side!)

edwinyzh··on Postgres Full-Text Search: A search engine in a database
A very well written article about SQLite FTS5! One question - it seems that your search result displays the matching paging number, how did you do that? because as far as I know, unlike FTS4, FTS5 has no `offsets` function.
edwinyzh··on Lessons learned from 15 years of SumatraPDF, an open source Windows app
I LOVE SumatraPDF because is very fast! In the past I've used Adobe (so sluggish), Foxit reader (was fast).
edwinyzh··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
What web server software you run in your VPS, and what resources/control/files your local firefox can access/manage?
edwinyzh··on Purelymail – cheap, no-nonsense email
Well Well, I've just gone through the setup with fastmail and currently trialing their platform, for a new domain of mine, otherwise if I know this earlier, I should have tried it first...
edwinyzh··on GitHub – nushell/nushell: A new type of shell
So a lot of FreeBSD command line tools support JSON output? That's cool! And I wish it was linux...
edwinyzh··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
I see now! So the 'expired' field is for checking died/incompleted workers.
edwinyzh··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
Thanks for the explanation and time is needed in order to digest it... I guess one might start with the simple "status" field approach ;)
edwinyzh··on Show HN: LANDrop – A cross-platform AirDrop-like file transfer tool
Tried snapdrop, but it didn't work. Not sure if it's related to the GFW....
edwinyzh··on Show HN: LANDrop – A cross-platform AirDrop-like file transfer tool
Very useful! Tried the iPhone and Windows clients and they works!
edwinyzh··on Do you really need Redis? How to get away with just PostgreSQL
Great! So I learned this technique. But one thing that's not clear to me - how a "expired" datetime field can allow easy retries? Anyone give me an example? Thanks!
edwinyzh··on Wapp – A Web-Application Framework for Tcl
IIRC, the author of SQLite uses TCL.
edwinyzh··on An Unbelievable Demo
But to me they are good analogies! And I laughed!
edwinyzh··on Stripe Payment Links
I guess like other services of stripe, it does NOT support developers from China mainland, right?
edwinyzh··on Selling Tiny Internet Projects for Fun and Profit
So this issue implies that there is a startup idea? I think there is a technical approach to solve the issue, by providing a system to let the escrow service provider to inspect and confirm the transferring of the source code, something like using a remote desktop (something like a temporary VPS) to where both the seller and the buyer have access, and during the delivering of the source code, the seller upload the code, compile it and run the result, and all the process is recorded. That way, if the buyer don't mark as 'received' in a given period, the platform staff can check and confirm the delivery and close the transaction.
