edmcnulty101··on Shrinking Mississippi River Puts American Farm Trade at Risks
How can the article not mention that it ebbs and flows? They're making it alarmist sounding when it's just the natural state of the river.
edmcnulty101··on Mandated diversity statement drives Jonathan Haidt to quit academic society
What are the consequences though?? Can they just submit a statement that says it doesn't? It's missing a lot of context.
edmcnulty101··on Mandated diversity statement drives Jonathan Haidt to quit academic society
This is the only correct post here.

Without both sides of the story it's impossible to deem the truth.

edmcnulty101··on Why are sex workers forced to wear a financial scarlet letter?
It's late stage capitalism. It's how all 'free markets' end up eventually.

The biggest players gobbling up all of the competition and essentially having a monopoly.

All you have to do is drive through middle america to see the Ruby Tuesday/Strip Mall-ification effect on most of the United States.

I love capitalism when it's functioning it's the greatest system ever invented.

When it's just a market full of monopolies it's akin to dysfunctional communism from a consumer choice perspective.

I don't know what the solution is.

edmcnulty101··on Lingering cardiac involvement in previously well people after mild Covid-19
Anytime I see an article like this.

I think of Slatestar codex article:

"Beware the man of one study."

https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/12/beware-the-man-of-one-...

Until this is confirmed and validated in a number of studies, it's still merely an observation.

Sounds like you have an ax to grind!

I've always really enjoyed Garmin and their products and their services.

I'm sure they're not perfect but they're an alternative to the Google all seeing eye of sauron.

Garmin. And their products are better than Fitbit anyway.

edmcnulty101··on Ask HN: How do you manage your IT/DevOps role?
You desperately need a ticketing system like Trello or another Kanban. Have people (and yourself) file tickets for all work items. Line up the tickets you're going to work on this week to give yourself 40-50 hours of work. Now you have something to show other people on teams, managers, etc and a document of your work.

All new work needs to go through the ticketing system and all new work needs a priority attached to it.

Every Monday you plan out your work for the week and line up higher priority tickets first.

If something immediate comes up during the week, you put a ticket out and bring the new item in.

With a head nod, you're still on the hook for contributing to the conversation.

People mark an emoji and then keep scrolling feeling good about themselves.

You have to find people who don't give a fuck. They're way more fun to talk to.

edmcnulty101··on The Lost Art of Conversation (1899)
Emojis may be the worst thing to happen to conversation in history.

They are the laziest form of communication on earth.

It's a reply without having to think of anything to further the conversation.

edmcnulty101··on Questions about the hard limits of human intelligence
Being that it's proven and we know for a fact that human intelligence is on a spectrum, why can't a baby be born with a 300 IQ.

Given that Intelligence is not directly co-orellated with success....and tons of Mensa people are waiting tables and doing jobs requiring no advanced IQ.

The real sad part is that there may be a baby with a 300 IQ who is trapped in a shitty dead end job by capitalism.

edmcnulty101··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
The real question is why are salaries so low everywhere else? It's a highly technical job with a high knowledge base to do well. The problem is that in a country with a billion people the value of ones labor is next to nothing.
edmcnulty101··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
Because it's expensive as hell to live in the US.. Health insurance and rent alone is the typical salary in another country. And don't even think about having a major illness, it will bankrupt you. We have shitty public transportation so one needs a car. And we have shitty safety net so a huge chunk of your money goes to retirement or savings to avoid homelessness at all stages of life. We also have numerous levels of taxation, Fed, State, City, Municipal, Local, Sales, Property. We also have massive insurance requirements on everything from health to cars to housing which is almost like another tax. Then we have to pay for our college which is the most expensive in the world, or get massive loans to repay.

After taxes rent utilities insurance car payment gas groceries savings retirement student loan you're looking at take home of like 20% of advertised salary.

Then the average person spends 8 to 10 hours working and another 30 minutes to an hour commuting with like 2 weeks of vacation a year average.

edmcnulty101··on Living Like Nothing Matters
I don't think you're going to make it.
edmcnulty101··on Living Like Nothing Matters
I don't know why you're getting downvoted but this is totally correct.

Which is why I don't like the Buddhist idea of getting rid of all materialistic attachments.

If you get rid of materialistic attachments you also get rid of meaning. And while it's true, things don't mean anything in an abstract universal sense....

Human beings live in a human world not in some void in space and meaning is important to us and can give us great happiness and joy.

Obviously life means something to all of us because we're still breathing every single day and most of us wish to continue to do so.

> America is a huge multi-cultural melting pot spanning generations. 97% of the population are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants.

Only European immigrants for hundreds of years until 1965 Hart Cellar. Coincidentally a few years later:

> Getting tired of the folk that move in and then say, "Hey, I've got mine. Now it's time to close the door on everyone else."

You're tired!!!?

I'm sick and tired of Western countries being responsible for Eastern countries billions of children! Stop having children! Maybe your country might actually be livable and not be something you want to run away from!

Notice that almost all of the countries that are desirable to immigrate to have a native population with a declining birth rate.

Also no one's closing any doors. any country can create their own prosperous economy? why not do that? Are they incapable of creating their own prosperous economy? It's closing the door because they're incapable of being successful on their own?

Instead Western countries get a billion people trying to immigrate and make the cost of labor dirt cheap.

It's pretty sad situation because the desirable countries are being turned into the rest of the world.
