edem··on What I think about Lua after shipping a project with 60k lines of code
where can i try this system? I've been working on my own but if there is already one out there i might use that instead
edem··on Interview with Senior JavaScript Developer 2024 [video]
I do trunk based development. i have a script named "c" that does `git add --all && git commit -m "progress" && git push` and another one named "p" that does `git push prod`. apart from that i use effect-ts and express with kita.js and a few small libs and do persistence with pg. the rest is written by me and somehow i don't feel the need to add anything to it. not everybody needs k8s, microservices, and all that crap that will fail at the worst possible moment.
edem··on Adventures Making Vegemite
i second this. to me marmite (and all the rest) is inedible, but i really like miso paste
edem··on Suppressing boredom at work hurts future productivity
When I realized that the gervais principle was not a joke _at all_ I became a contractor, and I moved to 100% remote. This way I produce the output they expect while working on my own products. Best of both worlds and everyone is happy.
edem··on Can Demis Hassabis save Google?
Can somebody explain for the uninitiated? What does Google need saving from?
edem··on Simple Made Easy (2011) [video]
what has been seen cannot be unseen
edem··on Simple Made Easy (2011) [video]
Rich is an absolute genius hands down.
edem··on Simple Made Easy (2011) [video]
This is an absolutely awesome talk. I can't recommend it enough. I never used Lisp or Clojure in production, but I learned so much just by trying it out and understanding how it works. You can't unsee it. Rich is a genius.
edem··on Stop using JSON Web Tokens for user sessions
i have been telling teams for years that jwts are only good for one-off processes. they don't even bother to use jewes, sometimes there is no signature validation. no wonder broken authorization is the top 1 security problem
edem··on Strong static typing, a hill I'm willing to die on
Same here. Whenever someone starts babbling about why __language x__ is hard because of types or whatever, I just disengage. I don't care what anyone thinks about types. I use them, and I will keep using them no matter what.
edem··on GraalOS: Containerless instant-on cloud functions for Java
You hate a tech because of ... how unrelated participants of the ecosystem chose their names? Why?
edem··on XML is better than YAML – Hear me out
Hah, I wrote my comment before reading the top comment (yours) and I agree. Java PTSD ruined XML, but it is still - to this day - superior to everything else that came after it because of XSD / XSLT and the like.
edem··on XML is better than YAML – Hear me out
I don't need to hear you out, xml *is* better than yaml. Yaml is just a random descriptor that can be ruined by a typo. xml has xslt and xsl, and what have you. It just happens to have a shape that went out of favor because of monstrosities like ESBs and Spring and people have PTSD. I can easily validate and transform my XML just by writing more XML which is awesome. This is why I don't use yaml if I can help it. If I want some descriptor JSON is still better since I can validate it with JSON Schema, or whatever validator I choose out of many. Yaml on most platforms is barely supported.
edem··on Brian Bucklew Porting Caves of Qud from Unity to Godot
If you're interested in how Brian thinks take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U03XXzcThGU I've learned a lot from this back in the day!
edem··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
I was really hyped about tRPC until I started using Remix I still think tRPC is great and for most projects you don't need more (specifically GraphQL).
edem··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
I wonder why anyone thinks that learning a library that's written in a dead language is a good idea.
edem··on Europeans Are Becoming Poorer
Where you live (which country)?
edem··on Functions and algorithms implemented purely with TypeScript's type system
I come from a Java / Kotlin background and TS is totally fine.
edem··on Cloud Appreciation Society
i thought this was going to be about AWS.
edem··on Psychedelic scientist sends brains back to childhood
Where can you order that stuff?
edem··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
I use Discord to talk privately with my friends. Sometimes I get answers there on specific communities faster, but I agree that the non-searchability is horrendous.
edem··on Rust has been forked to the Crab Language
Do you remember io.js?
edem··on The metaverse was never alive in the first place
When Mark came out with this Meta nonsense everyboy I know (mostly gamers) were laughing their a$$ off as Facebook was already called "a place for boomers" back then and it was ridiculed by all web3 folks. They never had the chance to convert those people.

From a gamer perspective the metaverse is something that have existed for a very long time (think Minecraft) and I was pretty sure that connecting all these universes was pretty much impossible because everybody is defending their own IP. You can't even stream on Youtube if there is a DMCA-protected song playing in the background.

It is just a cash grab including most NFTs, and I say this as a DeFi-enthusiast, and crypto-friendly person in general.

edem··on I gave commit rights to someone I didn't know (2016)
This is not at all a huge PR. Sometimes I make thousand line changes (or way over that), although in most cases it is just me working on a project. Changing a couple files (like in this PR) should be OK.
edem··on Why I Left Rust
why did the they have discomfort? is it because of reflection of is it because he was a black dude? does someone know the answer?
edem··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I'm late to the party, but I'll compensate by posting 2 things. 1. [Zircon][zircon] is a text gui library I have been working on for a few years in my spare time, although I haven't contributed much to it lately. It also comes with a tutorial in which I implement a simple roguelike game ([Caves of Zircon](caves-of-zircon)).

2. This is more recent (in fact I haven't finished it yet): I have been working on a toolkit in the last few weeks that includes a scheduler, an event bus and a state machine library ([Cobalt](cobalt-ts)). Using these in conjuncion you can easily implement a workflow engine (that's what I'm gonna use this for). The interesting part is that it is implemented by using functional programming. Feel free to check it out if you need something like it (permissive license).

edem··on Wat [video] (2012)
Oldie but Goldie!
edem··on Peter Thiel's Founders Fund pulled cash from SVB before collapse: Report
Which ones?
edem··on Coinbase suspending USDC:USD conversions over the weekend
Just because you can't trade it 1:1 doesn't mean it is not stable. The only question is whether you'd still be able to redeem it 1:1 for USD in the future or not. This has happened before with Tether and they were able to service a huge bank run not so long ago.
edem··on Coinbase suspending USDC:USD conversions over the weekend
Note that this is not because of mismanagement at Circle. This is because these banks bought 10yr bonds and MBSes and now that there is a bank run they have to take huge losses if they have to liquidate. Circle in fact managed this really well IMHO with 75% backing in 36 day t-bills that can be liquidated fast.
