eddiedunn··on How a Math Genius Hacked OkCupid to Find True Love
As a general rule, women don't "hit on" men here in Sweden either. Like everywhere else, they indicate interest in more subtle ways - sometimes unconsciously. The male who is able to pick up on (and then follow up on) these cues is the male who scores.

Also, the "slutty northern European women" stereotype just comes from the way they behave abroad, when they lose some inhibitions since nobody from back home is around to pass judgment on them.

eddiedunn··on Keyboard innovation is making them worse
Actually, I can see it work for programmers as well; tilde is easily pressed with the right thumb instead of left ring finger, esc is more easily reached for us vim users, and I know I sure don't use caps lock, ever. The soft function keys might be a problem for some, but I, at least, don't use them very often.
eddiedunn··on Keyboard innovation is making them worse
Meh. In Linux, at least, you can do this: setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:shifts_toggle,grp_led:caps us,se

It will toggle between US and Swedish layout when both shift keys are pressed together (basically the only time I use rshift), as well as toggle the caps led on when the Swedish layout is activated. I have caps lock bound to ESC, for more convenient for vim usage.

eddiedunn··on Japan's aging population could actually be good news
Are you an idiot? Are you seriously suggesting that just because someone is over 65 they stop giving a shit about the planet, society and/or the greater good?
eddiedunn··on NSA morale down after Edward Snowden revelations, former U.S. officials say
What's wrong with the grammar in the sentence you quoted?
eddiedunn··on Julian Assange unlikely to be charged in US
Why do you even talk about infiltration? That is such a ridiculous straw man. No, it's far more likely the women were bribed to talk about rape after the US got pissed off at Assange.

Anyway the whole case is really fishy if you look into it, whether they were bribed or not. One of the women (the one with the dildo shoes), for example, actually blogged about accusing men of rape as a valid way of getting back at them. Does that seem legit to you?

eddiedunn··on Winamp shutting down on December 20th, 2013
I use ownCloud[1] . A bit of a hassle to install, and not as streamlined as e.g. Dropbox to use, but well worth it if you wish to have your own, free and open source cloud solution.

eddiedunn··on Pair Programming (give it a rest)
There's nothing about TDD that prevents you from "using your human intelligence to plan ahead and design". I really don't understand why so many people think that.

The main point of TDD is organically "growing" modular and testable code. Also, after a session, you have unit and function tests for free, instead of having to implement them afterwards. Having a plan from the start, however, is beneficial with TDD as well, as long as you're flexible enough to modify it if necessary.

"Death knell", please. While I see why one would confuse "knell" with "kneel", this is incorrect and the words have vastly different meanings.

eddiedunn··on Time to end the war against saturated fat?
I was of the impression that rapeseed oil was unhealthy compared to e.g. extra virgin olive oil, due to the common processing methods used to extract it (heating, chemicals[1]). Extra virgin olive oil is extracted purely by mechanical means, no heating is allowed.

Here in Sweden, however, it's easy to find and buy organic cold pressed rapeseed oil. I'm of the impression that this stuff is a lot better for you than "canola" oil.

eddiedunn··on Daylight Saving Time Is Terrible: Here's a Simple Plan to Fix It
In many places, people go to school/work when it's dark regardless of whether DST is in effect or not.

I would also wager that the risk of being hit by a jetlagged, drowsy driver offsets any dubious benefit changing the time twice a year might have.

eddiedunn··on The stupidest trend in laptop design
I felt exactly the same way when I first got a keyboard without a numpad. Then I realized that I should just get used to touch typing on the number row instead. Though I still prefer a numpad (old habits die hard), using the num-row really isn't that bad once you get the hang of it.
eddiedunn··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
I'm sorry I came across as rude. Your blanket statement about Windows and iPhone being prettier presented personal bias as fact, which annoyed me, so I called you on it.

Yes, you may not agree when I say Windows (7) looks butt ugly -- and that was my point. It's all quite subjective.

Linux has a big advantage, though, in that you can quite easily switch between different Desktop Environments and/or Window Managers. Configuring the look and feel of your desktop is just a lot easier. And config-file time wasting is entirely optional, I promise.

eddiedunn··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
Bullshit. That's just your own very subjective opinion of UI preferences.

I personally really don't care at all for the ridiculous glassy look of Aero in Windows 7; it's ugly to me.

I think the biggest problem with Linux is that many people plainly prefer what they're used to. Additionally, if you're a so called Windows "power user" you have vested more knowledge in the Windows ecosystem - specialized knowledge that is useless in the Linux world. An older person doesn't have this specialized knowledge, computers are all the same to them. THAT'S why it's easier for them to switch. They're used to being n00bs and knowing little about the OS they're using. It really doesn't matter which OS it is.

eddiedunn··on Dear Startups: stop asking me math puzzles to figure out if I can code
Hey, that seems like an awesome hiring process.

Personally, I think that if you want a brilliant mathematician/problem solver, then that's what you should put in the job listing. Then asking the kind of questions exemplified in the article is likely merited. On the other hand, if you want a good programmer you should mainly look at the quality of the code they produce.

eddiedunn··on Calorie burner: How much better is standing up than sitting?
Carbs are not essential, in fact you can survive and thrive without them. Fat and protein are essential, however.

Why do you say that carbs should be your main energy source? I've seen no sound scientific evidence to support that claim.

I don't eat many carbs any more, and I'm living a lot more healthily as a result. It works for me. However, please do note that I'm not interested in getting into a debate with you on this -- that's the reason I wrote "sugary carbs"[1], which pretty much everyone agrees are bad for you.

[1]: Glucose, fructose, wheat flour are the most common culprits

eddiedunn··on Calorie burner: How much better is standing up than sitting?
Or, to keep the blood sugar levels at a sane level, people could stop eating so much junk; protein and fat don't spike your blood sugar the way sugary carbs do.
eddiedunn··on Because it needs to be said
I'm disgusted by this whole thing. Here's a lot of people jumping to conclusions based on the one-sided account of one person's blog post. Hasn't it occurred to you people that she might be lying? I'm not saying she is, but there is a possibility. We have legal processes for a reason.

Based on her account alone, I can say this: 1. She's very emotionally unstable and needs to seek professional help, for her own sake as well as everyone else's 2. She believes she was sexually assaulted, and consequently needs to report this to the police 3. Making a blog post about it was a big mistake if she has any hopes of the legal system punishing the man that sexually assaulted her

Finally, we live in a society where the man is supposed to "take initiative" and be "assertive and confident". You may say that it sucks, and I won't argue against you, but that's just the way it is. So men will do try to do things that women will not always appreciate. Consequently women _need_ to learn how to say "NO". This is really fucking important, for their own sake.

I imagine things would've played out a lot differently if Justine had taken responsibility for herself -- that she was in a bad situation with a man, but a situation that she, being a grown woman, could get out of by loudly saying "NO". Instead she asked the guy about his wife and kids. Instead she stood there passively until a knight in shining armor saved her -- too late.

Women are not children. They need to learn, or be taught, to stand up for themselves. There won't always be someone there to defend them. Dealing with this fact is part of growing up.

Heh. I remember the problems I had with moving around graphs, tables and pictures in MS Word. Man that sucked.

Doing references and placing images in Latex, on the other hand, was a breeze once I got a hang of its programmatic behavior.

Maybe it's better in Word now though. As I said, it's been a while since I seriously used it.

eddiedunn··on HP Chromebook 11
A number? What are these exactly? I keep hearing people say this, but I can't think of any reasons where I would really need MS Office.

I haven't used Word since Word 97, and I have never come across a use case that Open/LibreOffice, Google docs or Latex couldn't solve for me. I would imagine that the same would apply for most people.

On the other hand, I remember collaborating on many reports using Google docs because that was the only application featuring decent real time multi user editing.

eddiedunn··on Why Free Software Is More Important Now Than Ever Before
"Ask any book or music publisher: you can't expect to profit much from distribution if you can always get the same thing for free next door. If you get anything, it pretty much amounts to a donation."

Lies. Using music as an example, look at Spotify (or Itunes or whatever) as an example vs. downloading mp3s for free.

I'm aware this is anecdotal evidence, but I haven't downloaded any music for years due to Spotify being so convenient to use. Neither have any of the people I know.

I strongly believe that given a superior distribution model, money will follow.
