edcastro··on Ask HN: I'm looking for a Spotify software engineer to speak to
If everything else fails, maybe add support to last.fm? This way the user could just scrobble directly from Spotify to Last.fm and you get the song from there.
edcastro··on Ask HN: Switching from OS X to Linux
I say Fedora, it's the easiest Mac (EFI) install that always works and it's packages are constantly upgraded, closest to a rolling-release you can get without having to work some magic.

I use it on a MBP2011 and it runs flawslelly, I currently setup my computers with Ansible. If you want as a rough guide you can check out what I did specifically for the MBP on my Ansible playbook here:

Also, give it a look at the common-workstation role where I setup some defaults for my desktop computers like font rendering, apps and so on:

edcastro··on IRC as a Hiring Filter
I once did an interview on IRC for Opera and it was one of the most positively interesting interviews I did to date. There was a couple of people on the channel and the whole thing was very dynamic and organized. I loved it. Wish more companies did the same.

Also, forgot to mention, the SATA issues is fixed on Linux 3.18. Or you might want to disable NCQ while you dont upgrade with libata.force=1:noncq

Why use powertop instead of tlp? I've been using tlp on my macbook for a few months and everything works smoothly. Good battery life and suspend works perfectly using all tlp related programs (tlp, tlp-sleep, tlp-rdw). :)
edcastro··on Use your iDevice as an extra display for your Mac
Ah. I see. Got a little confused because the Mac app is already available, so I thought it was just a matter of old sign up form not removed from site yet.
edcastro··on Use your iDevice as an extra display for your Mac
Am I a little too slow here or they just launched the Mac app without the iOS counterpart? Can't find it on App Store.
edcastro··on A tiny group of people can see ‘invisible’ colours that no-one else can perceive
I can actually see infrared on the dark quite easily. But I think it should be due to some falloff of the light spectrum emitted by the LED.
edcastro··on 18 and hopeless
You can get a work visa for some countries without a degree, just need a proper job offer.

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Netherlands and a few others allow you to do so even if they say they don't.

However since you do not have an extensive practical experience, you might run into problems actually getting someone to offer you a job overseas.

Being a person with similar background (no degree) and that worked legally in a few countries already, I can just advice you to keep your head up and acquire more experience, the right time will come and the job offers will start flowing. :)

edcastro··on Trakdot: Track your Luggage
I've been a user since it was a Kickstarter project. It works quite well, actually. The device comes with a globally activated SIM card inside that sends an email/sms to you every time in you in a new location. There's also an Android/iPhone app that has a a bluetooth locator that you can pair with the device so you can track the proximity of your luggage inside the airport. The location is also shown on the app but it's just a webview of the website.
edcastro··on Mitro Releases a New Free and Open Source Password Manager
The UI is indeed awesome. I'd love to see a little more development on the features (doesn't support wildcard domains, for example). But it's definitely a great starting point to work on.
edcastro··on Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It
second that. make it harder, it gets a little boring after a little time for most of us (i guess). awesome and entertaining, nevertheless.
edcastro··on Brazilian government studying the creation of a free encrypted email service
Because there's a much larger and competent team that takes care of all other government IT business, it's called Serpro.
edcastro··on It's official: Fez 2 has been cancelled
I don't really feel sorry for Phil. People are being mean to him? Yes, definitely. But the other way around is well known to be done. Phil is usually, put mildly, blunt when talking about other people. Guess it's just karma.
edcastro··on U.S. spied on millions of e-mails and calls of Brazilians
Article also states that the Brazilians are the most monitored nation in Latin America. Given that other countries in Latin America has showed far less "cooperative" with the US in the past, this took me by surprise. Maybe it's also oil related since the discovery of a humongous pre-salt layer[1] might be of interest to US?

edcastro··on Snowden Leaves Hong Kong on Commercial Flight to Moscow
Seems he is heading to Venezuela through Cuba.
edcastro··on Hug vs. Handshake
It all depends on the country of origin of the person you are dealing with. In Brazil, for example, is very common to both handshake and give a cheek kiss on women after the first meeting, even if in a formal environment.
