renting a car - better rate if you are local.
ed_balls··on Show HN: PostgreSQL index advisor
Default DB for App Engine (NDB) has this feature. Implicit indexes are tad annoying.
ed_balls··on Mazda’s rotary engine in the age of the electric car
rx-7 had two combustion chambers.
ed_balls··on Cows in Texas and Kansas test positive for highly pathogenic bird flu
Yep, I'd fall under war against Ukrainians. Cows can turn grass into milk and beef. Most families that had livestock survived. Those that lost it died. Source: Standford lecture on Youtube about Holodomor

One of the main reasons why Mongols were so effective was use of livestock en mass. It gives you food, cavalry, transportation and clothes from grass. You get the shortest logistical supply chains in northern Eurasian plane.

I should rephrase that. Beef is bad in terms of efficiency - about %2. But cows are magic devices that can turn grass into milk and beef.

Just to play devil's advocate

1. Livestock is a really good energy storage. In case of war, natural disaster crops diseases there is a backup. Most people that survived Holodomor, because the had cows.

2. No animal protein maybe bad for your health (meat is a different story)

3. Crops need a lot of herbicide

ed_balls··on Why is it so hard to build an airport?
There is a huge political battle in Poland right now regarding a new airport. It's more controversial than nuclear plants and new rail combined.

ed_balls··on FlipperZero: Our Response to the Canadian Government
Adding a clock to a key, so the code is only valid for a few seconds + keyless entry respond only active if the key was moved in the last 30 seconds, would solve most of the problems. That's like $5 per key?
ed_balls··on Tick-killing pill shows promising results in human trial
mosquitos are hard, but with ticks there are a few different vectors of attack.

My understanding is that ticks first need to bite a rodent that is infected to spread Lyme, so maybe gene editing on rodents?

ed_balls··on Considerations for a long-running Raspberry Pi
Interesting, I was always in Mac mini camp.

I'd be cool to do a comparison new Lenovo mini vs used M1 Mac mini - should be the same price.

ed_balls··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
I went from 2017 Intel to 2024 M3 Max

I had problems with Homebrew and some apps installed through it (crashing). I couldn't compile one DLL. I had to reinstall Command line tools. Deleted one electron app - couldn't be bother.

I also noticed two binaries (one was Python) running in x86 mode via Rosetta. It was slow. Another reinstall. You can check Kind in Activity Monitor (apple/intel)

If you upgrade from Intel to Apple Silicon skip apps sync. Too many issues.
ed_balls··on Alexei Navalny has died
> It's a case of mass inheritable PTSD

About 8% of the world suffers from PTSD symptoms. There was a recent study done in Poland that said over 15% of population has symptoms. It is generational PTSD from WW2.

ed_balls··on Alexei Navalny has died
I'd argue USSR collapse was a messy dissolution. A failure would be: Tatarstan declares independence, regular fighting in the streets of Moscow for months.
ed_balls··on Alexei Navalny has died
And Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan. Siemens CNC machines are making cruise missles instead of train parts.
ed_balls··on Alexei Navalny has died
There isn't much more we can do. NATO could end Russia with more weapons and making a defence deal with Saudis in exchange for price dumping of oil and gas[1].

But no one wants a nuclear state to fail. Moscow must be terrified of another coup d'etat, hence Navalny's death.

[1]extracting, insurance and delivery cost for Saudis are about $17 and for Russia it maybe as high as $40 now.

If he would choose to leave after 2 terms, he would be a positive figure in Russian history. Now, he will be responsible for the collapse of the Russian Federation.

Recently I've been thinking there should be a term limit for PMs/Chancellors

Tatcher, Merkel, Putin - if they would have a 10 year limit, things would be much better.

ed_balls··on The dating app paradox
I should probably add that the picture was average quality - my mate made it using old Samsung. Second one was in a plain black t-shirt, but much better lighting and camera.

I have enough signal to claim that a profesional picture in a suit can boost your matches by 2 orders of magnitude. All my ex-girlfriends said it excites them I'm confided and ambitious - I'm not - but the suit conveys that messages. It's fascinating.

ed_balls··on The dating app paradox
Yes, she was bragging that she was chosen to Tinder Select or whatever it's called.
ed_balls··on The dating app paradox
I have very little info. I like snowboards, standup, dogs, no description. I've put software engineer as a job. A couple years ago, I've A/B tested a few photos and with regular photo in a t-shirt I've only got a 2-4 likes per week. With a very similar photo to this one https://e0.pxfuel.com/wallpapers/29/831/desktop-wallpaper-io...

I've got about 60 likes per week. I've thought that's a lot, but my ex told me she's got almost 2000 in a first week.

ed_balls··on Memory and new controls for ChatGPT

ed_balls··on The dating app paradox
Is there a good analysis on what are the strongest predictors a good long term relationship?

I've broke up with my ex a few months ago. She was an MD. Now a lot of my matches on Tinder are medical workers (over 30%) and I'm baffled why.

tin_foil_hat_mode: He spoke with X last, recommend similar matches, he will come back, we will have recurring revenue.

Does it make sense to connect west and east coast via inland waterway e.g. Snake <-> Missouri river. Would it be too expensive? I assume nukes are out of the question.
ed_balls··on Cars suck, man
older cars had a knob to adjust them. With LEDs you usually have to open the hood and use a wrench or they can auto adjust. Service should do it for it.
ed_balls··on US regulator considers stripping Boeing's right to self-inspect planes
> government that depends on human virtuousness will fail.

that was the crucial difference between communism and capitalism. Communism used virtuousness only, when capitalism used virtuousness and greed. Communism failed.

ed_balls··on A vision for the alleviation of water scarcity in the US Southwest
you could use brine for construction (Isreal build a wall along Jordan). Also you can pump it into a ship and dump into Pacific, slowly.
