ed_balls··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
Palantir delenda est
ed_balls··on Youth Suicides Declined After Creation of National Hotline
Something I read recently really stuck with me: giving people methylphenidate or other stimulants may lower the risk of a second suicide attempt by around 25%.
ed_balls··on Anduril, Palantir and SpaceX are changing how America wages war
Palantir must be destroyed.
ed_balls··on Palantir's Manifesto and Karp's Dissertation
Palantir must be destroyed.
ed_balls··on Good sleep, good learning, good life (2012)
yep, or call a clinic that does it. Search for MOXO, DIVA 5. The most important part is education. Sure, the medication helps, but understanding the root causes of mood swings, motivation, executive functions, hyperfocus, perfectionism, and emotional dysregulation is so important.

Educating yourself on how the brain works, the most important organ, is hugely underrated. Imagine playing a game with only half the screen visible. You wouldn’t see your stats, enemy info, or the map. It would be frustrating to play.

ed_balls··on The Dangers of California's Legislation to Censor 3D Printing
I could ask LLM to find me "legal" parts that are 1:1 with gun parts or even better find metal parts in craftcloud3d.com or sendcutsend.com. With big enough database it could find right items on Amazon. It's impossible to legislate.
ed_balls··on The human cost of 10x: How AI is physically breaking senior engineers
Due to prolonged stress, which lack of control is the main contributor e.g. you have expectations, you cannot control variable x,y,z, which leads to stress, which over long period of causes burn out.
ed_balls··on Tax Wrapped 2025
>Just like credit cards, the national debt has interest payments the government needs to pay.

Something I learned a few years ago: debt is to national debt what a chair is to an electric chair[1]. Government has to increase monetary base when economy grows. National debt is a good thing, where credit cards are just awful.

> Interest doesn't buy anything. It's the price of having spent money we didn't have.

And where does interest go? WHERE DOES INTEREST GO? <insert goose chase meme>

ed_balls··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
That's exactly my point! you do set alarms, you seek the solution. You feel bad when running late so you mask or compensate. If you lack empathy or seek attention, you wouldn't do those things.
ed_balls··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
that's not ADHD. People with ADHD would improve - it may take a LOT of time, but it will happen. Quite often they will go to the extreme and come in way too early. My bet would be on Cluster B personality trait e.g. lack of empathy and constant need for attention and validation.

ADHD frequently co-occurs with other conditions.

ed_balls··on Show HN: 30u30.fyi – Is your startup founder on Forbes' most fraudulent list?
avoid people that need narcissistic supply at all cost.
ed_balls··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
Any sort of gambling should be limited to, say 20% of your average yearly tax (last 5 years). Prediction market should be banned.
ed_balls··on I'm glad the Anthropic fight is happening now
It's interesting that's the only interview when he challenged someone.
ed_balls··on I'm glad the Anthropic fight is happening now
Dwarkesh is even more astroturfed than Lex Fridman. The interviews they do are just ads. No challenges, no hard questions. All seem staged and prepared.
ed_balls··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
I wanted to build a landing page for my gf, but since LLMs make it so simple I'm building SaaS for Psychoeducation.

Modifications to my Land Cruiser j90

- LED daytime running lights / off-road LED light bar

- Winch

- Front left – tie rod end (both)

- Rear axle – pinion bearing (loud while driving)

- Right rear brake caliper – brake fluid leaking from the piston

- Boost chip (chip + turbo tee), Kill switch

ed_balls··on Ask HN: How to be alone?
You need to go through a proper grief. Cry, scream - the whole package. When the acceptance kicks in, try to find the root cause of what happen and why.

How was the relationship? Did you feel like the first 6–12 months were perfect, but then you started drifting apart and having arguments every week or two? Have you ever felt like you needed to record a conversation you had with your partner?

> great psychiatrist who has me on antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, and mood stabilizers

Have you gone through a therapy with him?

ed_balls··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Volume bar now blocks access to the latest tabs in the browser
ed_balls··on Autism's confusing cousins
What is missing is the occurence of these disorders.

Adhd 5-10%, autism 0.5%, cluster b 5%. The rest is quite rare. Adhd has the highest comormobility.

ed_balls··on Tech hiring still hasn't recovered from 2022 – and may not soon
We aren't returning to 2010-2020
ed_balls··on OpenAI O3-Mini
I wanted to listen to a podcast where a profesor explains a new drug for ADHD. Instead of spending 2h of my time I spent 5 min reading a summary generated by gpt from a youtube transcript.
ed_balls··on Why is it so hard to buy things that work well? (2022)
> “Find the dependencies — and eliminate them.” When you're working on a really, really good team with great programmers, everybody else's code, frankly, is bug-infested garbage, and nobody else knows how to ship on time.

Does anyone have a feeling that this has never been further from the truth?

ed_balls··on Portugal brings back tax breaks for foreigners in bid to woo digital nomads
yes, you cannot sell a house and move it to a tax heaven.
ed_balls··on Portugal brings back tax breaks for foreigners in bid to woo digital nomads
Digital nomads don't have to live in Lisbon. Besides, housing supply issues will be solved in 10 years - baby boomers dying.
ed_balls··on Tesla failing to deliver Semi-trucks on time to PepsiCo, Sysco, UPS, and Walmart
I, also, do thing diesel generators are way to go for trucking.

What do you think about natural gas generators? They could be cheaper and cleaner.

ed_balls··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
everyone that was part of lay offs knows they are never as bad as media describe them. They will be alright.
ed_balls··on Answering Legal Questions with LLMs
It's quite hard, it would be a mixture or references, conditions, size of all legislation.

>The complexity of options trading regulation should not be subject to the same complexity threshold as (eg) public intoxication laws

Why not? The point is to make it a bit harder to pass more complex laws, not stopping it. Your parliament has 500 seats. You need 251 votes to pass new complex law. For laws that simplify complexity you need half of the present MPs e.g. 400 are in, so you need 201 votes.

ed_balls··on Answering Legal Questions with LLMs
You can solve it be assigning a complexity score to a law. If the law increases complexity you need a supermajority to pass it, otherwise simple majority is ok.
ed_balls··on Amazon grows to over 750k robots, replacing 100k humans
It would in places where robot owners care about. To avoid social unrest they will be forced to pay for UBI.

The two remaining problems would be:

- purpose and identity.

- places like Bangladesh where industries like textile will disappear.

ed_balls··on California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
security e.g. massive sandstorm from Sahara blocking a lot of solar
ed_balls··on EU data shows PHEVs emit 350% more CO2 than tested values
The subsidy is badly structured:

- installing the charging point - 2k credit

- charing at charging station - 2k credit

- your electricity bill - 2k credit

- servicing the car - the more you drive on electric power the greater the discount is, say up to 50% with 2k cap.
