ectoplasm··on New design could finally help to bring fusion power closer to reality
The heat produced by humans is trivial compared to the heat produced by sunlight hitting the earth. That's why sources of energy that don't trap sunlight are desirable.
ectoplasm··on Firefox 42 will not allow unsigned extensions
> As for running your unsigned extension, there will be six versions of Firefox available (stable, unbranded stable, beta, unbranded beta, dev edition and nightly). Of these six, only two will force addon signing. All the others are a tweak away.

Okay, I want a branded Firefox. I don't want to run a dev edition or nightly. My choices are stable or beta. I probably don't even want beta, but it doesn't really matter. So, I don't really have a choice here.

I can see why signed extensions are a good thing, but removing the option from about:config is unnecessary.

ectoplasm··on The ethics of modern web ad-blocking
The first step is to just stop feeling guilty about doing what you want with your own property, and then you don't need to bother with these huge rationalizations either way.

Would you support a law that made it illegal to run ad-blocking software? Why or why not?

ectoplasm··on U.S.A., Land of Limitations?
If it's such a small number of people, is there a problem with substantially increasing the minimum wage?
ectoplasm··on Miyazaki's Beautiful Anti-War Dreams
I mean at the conceptual level. So many things are defined in terms of their opposite. If we have no knowledge, understanding, definition, experience of evil, we don't have a benchmark against which to compare our actions and make sure they are different. Hopefully once understood, it stays remembered but in the past.
ectoplasm··on Miyazaki's Beautiful Anti-War Dreams
The point is that what you consider evil, somebody else considers good, and vice versa. Furthermore, we define good in terms of evil and evil in terms of good. The existence of one necessitates the existence of the other, whether in the past, present, or future.
ectoplasm··on Miyazaki's Beautiful Anti-War Dreams
So like 9/11 was awesome then?
ectoplasm··on Miyazaki's Beautiful Anti-War Dreams
It's common enough to be both abuser and victim.
ectoplasm··on Employees at Google, Yahoo, and Amazon lose nothing if they unionize
I'll take democracy over religion any day.
ectoplasm··on Why debugging is all about understanding
That's interesting, could you elaborate?
ectoplasm··on Defending the Right to Be Forgotten
We both have a right to not be assaulted. I don't have a right to assault you, you don't have a right to assault me. However, if you assault me, you forgo your right to not be assaulted. I now have the right to assault you in self-defense.

At least, I think this is the logic. Not sure if self-defense counts as assault in a legal sense. A similar argument probably applies to police hitting people as well as forms of consensual violence.

ectoplasm··on You Can Prove a Negative [pdf]
I would describe what you're talking about as "black swans cannot exist". That is an even stronger statement, because it also implies that black swans do not currently exist.
ectoplasm··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
Sure, ok, makes sense.
ectoplasm··on Five Years of Being a Full-Time Indie Game Developer
The statement is also true if he hasn't seen any games. It's just an anecdote about his experience, that's fine.
ectoplasm··on Credit cards used on cvsphoto.com may have been compromised
It does if one of them is in a safety deposit box.
ectoplasm··on The day I ordered pizza that 'doesn't exist'
Maybe Popeye eats cold leftovers.
ectoplasm··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
Ok re: IQ. Re: means, I still can't parse what you wrote the first time and I'm a native speaker. <noun> will be <verb> with <noun> <noun>?
ectoplasm··on The day I ordered pizza that 'doesn't exist'
The problem is that mozzarella doesn't keep at sea.
ectoplasm··on Eating habits – parsing the moral language of modern diets
You could probably cook pasta with it.
ectoplasm··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
The better the quality of your education, the greater the influence of genetics on your IQ score. At least, that was my understanding of the WP article, which says poor environment means poor heritability.
ectoplasm··on Announcing Rust 1.2
You could reasonably do some for loop stuff using a C AST as your IR if you wanted. Not really sure why you would do this if coming from another language, but you could.
ectoplasm··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
Per the intro to that article, presumably high intelligence also has a large environmental component, in that you need a good environment not to squash the heritability.

btw, I think you didn't finish editing:

> normally distributed with the mean of the offspring the mean of the parents

> normally distributed with the offspring mean the mean of the parents

ectoplasm··on Gow - A lightweight alternative to Cygwin
Hmmm, the other grammar and spelling errors made me think that "to" was also just a mistake.
ectoplasm··on Gow - A lightweight alternative to Cygwin
Nit pick, but plenty of things compile to C / C++.

ectoplasm··on Eating habits – parsing the moral language of modern diets
Do you have evidence to support that you do not 'troll'?
ectoplasm··on Why debugging is all about understanding
The following program segfaults:

  main() { a(); b(); }
You don't have a debugger. You don't have the source for a or b. Strategy? Sure printf works, but so does //.
ectoplasm··on Eating habits – parsing the moral language of modern diets
By all means, if you think processed food tastes better, then that's what you should be eating, at least as far as good taste -> enjoyment -> good mental health -> good physical health is concerned. But, it's worth your time to do proper comparisons and not write off unfamiliar things.
ectoplasm··on Eating habits – parsing the moral language of modern diets
Also processed stuff usually doesn't taste as good. The enjoyment you derive from eating contributes to your physical health.
ectoplasm··on Artificial Intelligence Is Already Weirdly Inhuman
Is your belief falsifiable? Wouldn't the experimenter just be rationalizing their intuitive decision about the meaning of their observations regardless?
ectoplasm··on Artificial Intelligence Is Already Weirdly Inhuman
By your own logic, you just made an intuitive decision about whether I have a point, and now you're just rationalizing it. Not much point in trying to have a rational conversation.
