ecshafer··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
The solution is deregulation and land-value taxes. Tax land so that it reaches its maximum utilization. Deregulate so that buildings can actually be built.
ecshafer··on The Bannon-Bernie Bromance over AI and Oligarchs
Bannon is a populist, and America-first nationalist. Bannon is NOT a free-market reagonomics Republican. Remember, one of his criticisms of Obama was that he didn't bail out the auto-industry enough. This shouldn't be surprising who actually pays attention. There is also a large amount of Obama - Bernie - Trump voters, people need to get rid of simple Left vs Right thinking, there are multiple dimensions to politics.
ecshafer··on ImpactGate: A merge gate that scores the structural decay AI adds
Sonarqube has existed for like 20 years. There's doezens of cyclomatic complexity, linter, and cve scanner tools though.
ecshafer··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Can this AI integration now mean that Siri can finally just read the wikipedia page of a topic when I am driving? Or can I finally have Siri add a stop at Mcdonalds on google maps during a road trip?
ecshafer··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
Its the personal blog of https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=tenderlove aka Aaron Patterson, core member of Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
ecshafer··on New $100K H-1B Visa Fee Pushes Tech Jobs Offshore
I don't think this is surprising given that the US has also lost so much manufacturing due to cost cutting. A service economy is going to need a lot of software engineering. A nice big factory takes a lot of mechanical and electrical engineers.
ecshafer··on Who Aligns the Aligners?
And they also send people to jail for twitter posts. Ill take good ole USA where at least I know I am free, over the tyranny of a parliament. Look at how France and Germany are responding to democratically elected parties who are vaguely right wing, they pull out all of the stops of suppressing them.
ecshafer··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
In most web frameworks its not terribly hard to extern content (you probably do this already for translations) and just have a nice little yaml or json thats easily edited.
ecshafer··on Shopify moves back to Native from React Native
They don't say anything in the post. But hotwire native supports pushing ui elements to ios and android. I imagine that might be part of the reason. I haven't built anything substantial with hotwire native though so I am not sure on all of the edge cases.
ecshafer··on Object storage is all you need
Why? This just seems like a bad idea.
ecshafer··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
They do not define what their written or verbal agreements are, it is as simple as that. That statement would mean its possible they asked 35 years ago got a shrug and some guy saying "sure" OR it could maximally be a full contract with permanent transfer of the right of painting the wall. If this organization uses a vague statement, then its fair to take the vagueness is the worst possible way for them.
ecshafer··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
written and verbal agreements is incredibly vague. This could mean as little as "Sure you can paint a mural on my building", or any number of agreements that don't transfer ownership rights. They don't say that they have a written agreement allowing indefinite usage of the wall for murals. Allowing a mural to be painted is not a transference of ownership and is not an agreement for the owner to never paint over it.

> I think you should consider why you immediately, and incorrectly, jump to the defense of moneyed interests over artists and community organizations.

Because property rights are good and allow for a functioning society.

ecshafer··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
> How does the erasure of four longstanding community murals happen without any communication with CAMP or the artists involved?”

Private Property is how. People don't own other people's property for abstract reasons like they joined a club that once painted graffiti on walls.

ecshafer··on How GPT‑5.6 Sol helps run quantum computing experiments
When it gets to politics or economics there are an increasingly large amount of reddit like socialism comments. It seems ironic given its run by a VC firm.
ecshafer··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
When I was at Shopify we used Tailwind along with our internal component library to great effect. Tailwind is a great css framework, but their business model is doomed by AI. Tobi acquihiring them for making a great product is a good result.
ecshafer··on Colonialism for clicks: influencers trying to film most isolated tribes
Filming people isn't colonialism, absurd headline, as expected from the Guardian.
ecshafer··on Scientists Find Worms in Almost Every Fish in a Tuna Haul – 96% Were Infected
You can eat Sushi that is cooked, and there are even vegetarian rolls that don't have any fish. Sushi is quite good.
ecshafer··on Go grandmaster Shin defeats AI KataGo with a two-stone handicap
The consequences of League of Legends. The brain trust over there use ELO and its caused everyone to think Elo is an acronym with the wrong pronunciation.
ecshafer··on Qwen 3.8 27B available on Cerebras at 1500 tokens/s
I have a self hosted Qwen 3.8 27B and I find it to be unusably bad. Using it agentically, it will spin around in circles on even small tasks talking to itself until it loses context and starts again. I even had it say "I've forgotten the users initial question"
ecshafer··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
> People not realizing that code is about the easiest thing in the world to ship back and forth between different countries: if a company is hell-bent on being cheap, they'll outsource rather than bring someone in.

We can tariff software, I just need Trumps phone number to let him know.

ecshafer··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
China is of course producing tons of great engineers, finance, mathematicians, science, etc. But China is also trying to provide good jobs for Chinese. A big reason I think China is seeing success is that on top of their education, they are then creating a pipeline for Chinese students to become workers. China doesn't want their people going overseas. They want them working, building industry, and developing technologies and skills locally.
ecshafer··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
There are a lot of office / IT jobs that can be done by anyone with an education. Instead of a team of H1B from TCS doing BI dashboards, why not a bunch of local college kids? You dont even need a CS degree, any business degree student can do that with a couple days of training. Hell an associates degree should be more than enough. Companies used to hire local people, give aptitude tests and place people.
ecshafer··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
I have seen H1Bs used for basic Java development, Desktop Support, CRM managemetn, Marketing, Project Managers, and all sorts of basic office work. The idea its used for the best and brightest is absurd. When you also count the massive fraud in H1B, people looking for kickbacks, racial preferences, lying on resumes (I once interviewed an H1B with 4 pages on their resume, couldn't answer a single question from what I pulled out of the resume, and got overruled by the manager on the hiring board). There is a massive amount of office work that can be done by a bright high schooler or community college grad, but gets shunted off to a body shop who mass applies H1B. Several years ago Disney fired their IT staff and replaced them with H1B, this was in the news. There was obviously not a talent shortage, and plenty of American citizens can pass the A+ or various microsoft sysadmin certs that "qualify" someone for IT work.
ecshafer··on Saab has unveiled its A3 collaborative combat aircraft concept
I couldn't agree more on the draft. Draft and making congress actually declare wars would be a huge improvement.
ecshafer··on Saab has unveiled its A3 collaborative combat aircraft concept
The goal of concept to aircraft in 36 months is admirable. Anduril recently built a jet in a similar timeframe. In the US at least, the last 30 years after defense industry consolidation has caused great stagnation. The F-35 took over a decade and went monstrously over budget, more as a jobs program than as a functional product. Competition showing they can build a jet faster and cheaper is what we need to kick the DoD into gear with the large contractors.
ecshafer··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Come on. I am sure you don’t like DHH. But he’s always taken security seriously in Rails.
ecshafer··on Htmx 4.0
One of the things that is great about htmx (besides being the best library) is the lack of modern silicon valley corpo communication. It has the slightly unhinged feel of a nerd that spent too much time on Newgrounds or 4chan or something awful. Which is how the internet aught to be.
ecshafer··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
They provide services to PKK which is a terrorist group, specifically.
ecshafer··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
This doesnt make any sense. If you are married to a us citizen you qualify for a green card. Then you need 3 years for citizenship. You never need to leave the country. Ive been through this process, this is absolutely wrong.
ecshafer··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Some of the worst programmers ive ever met have been h1b visa programmers.
