ecoquant··on Surrealism Is 100
Francis Bacon was born in 1909. Really don't know how you can say this is recent times.
ecoquant··on Microsoft accused of selling AI tool that spews violent, sexual images to kids
What is really bizarre is what % of teenage boys are watching insane porn that has nothing to do with AI. A huge %.

Journalism is just the absolute worst at this point. Completely negative value, click bait, trash.

ecoquant··on World War II 'rumor clinics' helped America battle wild gossip
Everyone just takes the lack of conscription for granted now too.

A possible land invasion and there was a good chance you would get drafted anyway.

WW1 was also not that long ago that your father or uncle fought in.

All these aspects are rather unrelatable now.

ecoquant··on Ask HN: In the 90s, did programmers job-hop frequently?
This view is just absurd.

Anything related to the web was not even consider "coding". HTML monkeys got paid nothing. The idea a HTML monkey was doing engineering was a laughable idea. There were no python jobs when python was brand new.

Sure, a good C or Perl programmer had no trouble getting a job in 1994. There were so many less jobs though overall.

Then in 2000 the entire industry goes on life support for 2-3 years.

The good times are now.

ecoquant··on Stable Diffusion 3: Research Paper
The use case is you can print out the great images and put them on your wall for decoration.

It is just art. I think AI art shows what obsessed gadget makers for profit we have become culturally. We can't even figure out that the use case for art is hanging on the wall for decoration. For a conversation piece. A few will have their name become known and make it into galleries.

Infinite supply means the value tends towards zero.Good luck monetizing anything with those economic characteristics.

ecoquant··on Worldcoin hit with temporary ban in Spain over privacy concerns
Totally agree. There is no conspiracy.

Of course, 20 years from now if this is actually true well then we HAD to sell the biometric data at some point because a project of this size needs the funding.

We really had no choice in the matter at Worldcoin. We didn't want to sell the biometric data but we couldn't see any other way to get to UBI.

ecoquant··on Americans' trust in media plummets to historic low: poll (2023)
Maybe, or maybe the previous ideological gaps are so far in the past that we can now only see the idealized version.

You don't hear much about discrimination against Irish or Polish Americans these days, unlike "the good old days".

People thought Kennedy could not win the Presidency because that would give the Pope too much power.

Surely, there are many differences like this that have simply faded with time and have been replaced by new, equally ridiculous divides that will also fade in time when replaced by another set of ridiculous divides.

When that happens, our divides today will sound as absurd as the Pope controlling a Catholic president just because they are Catholic.

How about a near civil war between Catholics vs Protestants? How could that ever happen? Only in the "good ol days!"
