ececconi··on Triplebyte Engineer Genome Project
I think this writeup is a tad lengthy. It's not until the fifth paragraph that I understand what's even going on

>Intelligent matching with software is how hiring should work. Failed technical interviews are a big loss for both sides. They cost companies their most valuable resource, engineering time. Applicants lose time they could have spent interviewing with another company that would have been a better fit.

I feel like that should have been the headline for this. For a company that is meant to match people to companies, I think their external communication should be excellent not just good. How can I trust that this company will communicate my strengths and weaknesses in a way other people can understand if it's difficult for me to follow one of their flagship blog posts?

ececconi··on The Impact of Index Investing: A Follow-Up
Cash is a great thing, it's something you don't have to worry about and usually is FDIC insured. Personally, I'm holding onto quite a bit right now because I think much of the market might be overvalued. I think I was just trying to see if I could think out a case where you could in theory not worry about not having too much of it on hand.
ececconi··on The Impact of Index Investing: A Follow-Up
To that I say you can have an even cheaper way to hedge against risk by having put options on the stock you own.

Also your example assumes that all the shares were bought at the same time and declined 50%. If you've been investing for years, the value of your gains/losses wouldn't simply be a "market crash" it would include the price at which you bought the stock at plus any dividends you reinvested. So a 50% downturn from a certain high point could be much less from how much capital you initially committed. Add to that you can take capital losses as a way to reduce tax liability in a given year.

There's enough ways to hedge without having too high of a cash drag.

ececconi··on The Impact of Index Investing: A Follow-Up
I don't see the difference between having cash on hand and having stocks. You can sell on the market five days a week. Add multiple credit cards with a very high credit line on them you effectively have about 30 days to sell stock from the emergency point.

Why keep stocks over cash? Even if they don't appreciate, or even if it is a down year, they still pay dividends which can be reinvested.

ececconi··on ROI on a college degree depends what you study, not where
That might be slightly offset by being able to reduce your tax liability due to the interest payments of college loans.
ececconi··on Future Screens Are Mostly Blue
Pretty cool. I was going by a book I read a couple years ago, but could be totally wrong. What you mentioned is very interesting and seems to contradict their findings.
ececconi··on Future Screens Are Mostly Blue
Many ancient cultures had the same word for blue and green because they are actually pretty close together from a wavelength perspective. A conjecture is that people started to have a word for the color blue, in addition to green, when blue pigment was discovered and started to be used more regularly.
ececconi··on Quora begins making money with the introduction of advertising
So much of Quora is knowing who to follow.
ececconi··on Quora begins making money with the introduction of advertising
I use Quora a lot. It seems that 70-90% of people who upvote my answers or new followers are from India. Not saying that's a bad thing at all. From an advertising standpoint, though, they would make much more money per capita with more engaged users from the United States, England, or other English speaking nations.

Note: Quora is only available in English at the moment.

ececconi··on Intel to Cut 12,000 Jobs, Forecast Misses Amid PC Blight
You're right. I made a bold statement without looking into the details. Looking at their yearly balance sheet, though, their yearly liabilities are going up. They've got quite a bit of debt.

A good 1/3 of their assets are in property plant and equipment value. That means that the fair market value of that stuff can tank if they don't keep up the pace of growth because what if they can't sell as much of their products anymore because of a shift to other technologies?

This is for sure a move because their revenue forecasts are grim in many areas they operate in.

ececconi··on Intel to Cut 12,000 Jobs, Forecast Misses Amid PC Blight
I doubt with the CFO being let go most people will end up getting re-hired in other groups. Their revenues are down, they're closing up shop in some areas or realizing they need to run some areas with less people. It's actually a pretty big deal.
ececconi··on Drones Are the New Threat to Airline Safety
If a bird strike through an airplane engine can cause major damage to an engine, it's not hard to imagine a drone being able to cause damage. I think there's got to be some education about no fly zones near airports. Lots of this seems to be common sense, but anyone with some cash can buy a drone and fly it in improper areas.

ececconi··on Slack raises $200M at $3.8B valuation for business messaging
I'd pay for Asana if I ever needed to manage a small team on a personal project or if I start my own company. There's just too much intertia for me to change the project management software at the clients I work with now as a consultant.
ececconi··on Slack raises $200M at $3.8B valuation for business messaging
More likely is that products come and go.
ececconi··on Slack raises $200M at $3.8B valuation for business messaging
I know people say things through work IM that they wouldn't message via email. Not a good practice at all, but there is the illusion of something being less permanent via IM.
ececconi··on Asana
I feel like Asana would be a mess with a large team of people (say 50+) marching towards one goal. I find it good for small teams. Once you need to roll up higher level reports that go out to C-Suite type management for the status of a major project, it starts to fall apart.

With groups of about 10 people I think its great.

ececconi··on Asana
I really don't like how you have to be connected to the internet to use the mobile app. I'm a diehard asana user, but this kills it for me when I'm on airplanes. I'm on airplanes 2x a week.
ececconi··on The Uber Model, It Turns Out, Doesn’t Translate
Gross margins are probably pretty good for some items at grocery stores, but in general their income percentages are razor thin.
ececconi··on How quitting my corporate job for my startup dream f*cked my life up
The only real expectation that I have is that I'll come out of it with tons of experiences. Who knows what'll happen or not happen.
ececconi··on How quitting my corporate job for my startup dream f*cked my life up
I've been working at a consulting firm for almost six years. Tons of people quit to make their own startups or go into another industry. For me, I'm just thinking of taking a six month leave next year so I can live in Europe, not work unless I want to, and pursue the arts. I'm thinking of doing a lot of traveling, photography, and writing.

I think a lot of the angst people have about corporate jobs is that people think about what they are missing out on. I think it's really important to not lose sight of what you enjoy, even if you only have a few hours a week to enjoy it.

ececconi··on As US Passports for Domestic Flights Loom, IRS Can Now Revoke Passports
Pretty cool. I usually have a passport card and an extra wallet in my bag for if things get stolen (another debit card to a different account, other credit cards, etc). I've never actually used it, but I'm on a flight twice a week.
ececconi··on As US Passports for Domestic Flights Loom, IRS Can Now Revoke Passports
It's not just the Real ID that makes you able to go to Mexico and Canada without a passport. It is that the ID is an 'Enhanced Driver's License.' Currently this only applies to licenses issued in Connecticut, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, South Dakota, Vermont and Washington.

Florida is Real ID compliant, but not an Enhanced Driver's License, so you cannot use it to cross international borders. For that, I use a passport card.

ececconi··on The Leica Q: A six month field test
It does keep the size of the lens down, though, the thing is tiny compared to the Leica.
ececconi··on The Leica Q: A six month field test
I'm lusting for the X70, but can't justify it (not on price but on principle) because I bought an X100T just 4 months ago.

FYI -- I'm totally in love with the X100T.

ececconi··on The Leica Q: A six month field test
I have an X100T. I love the camera. It's in my bag everyday. I've shot some awesome stuff in the past few months. A friend's wedding last month and Mardi Gras in New Orleans in the past week.

I can't recommend the camera enough. If the form factor is too big for you, go with the newly released X70.

ececconi··on Yelp Posts Q4 Loss, CFO Resigns
I've replaced Yelp with Foursquare a while ago for finding things around me and trusting reviews. I've found that the character limit and smaller user base of Foursquare makes reading reviews a much more pleasant experience. I also like how there is no star system on Foursquare.
