> Again, ad hominem attack

That's not what ad hominem means. Ad hominem doesn't mean I can't insult you

> My account is from 2015 and has ~11k points. Your account is 4 months old and barely has 150 points. It's more likely that you're a poorly trained LLM (whoever trained you had skill issues :P) rather than me.

Content matters more than age you goofball

ecb_penguin··on SSL certificate requirements are becoming obnoxious
> It's not 1995, cryptography isn't arcane anymore.

My username is literally a cryptographic mode of operation. But you didn't know that, because you have a low skill issue.

> Do you know the US government has dedicated cloud regions (eg:

This is a joke, right? You're just an LLM going through training.

ecb_penguin··on SSL certificate requirements are becoming obnoxious
I don't know why you think a couple sentence reply is all that difficult...
ecb_penguin··on AI Is Wrecking Young Americans' Job Prospects
Nothing unethical about voluntary contracts that you freely enter into.

There are tradeoffs and you'd do well to acknowledge agency in this world.

ecb_penguin··on AI Is Wrecking Young Americans' Job Prospects
> all the juniors that were hired, now mids or seniors, are going to jump ship to whoever is going to pay them the most

Yeah, that's the point!

> So, the company can either grow talent and then pay them market rate or hire at market rates from other companies that grew them.

It's not a zero sum game. The simple fact you overlooked is not every junior jumps ship.

> Hiring juniors, while good for the industry in the long run, doesn't really benefit an individual company

Things that are good for the industry DO benefit individual companies. Having a large and capable talent pool is good for everyone.

ecb_penguin··on AI Is Wrecking Young Americans' Job Prospects
This could be the next iteration of stealing talent to prevent others from owning the market. An actually intelligent investor could dominate by bucking the trend and hire lots of smart, eager junior candidates.

When other tech companies realize GenAI will never produce what they want, there will be a rush to re-hire developers.

Top talent all started as junior talent. Grab that pool so nobody else will have it.

> but that sounds quite literally as "skill issue". Not in you personally, but in the environment you work in.

You have no idea the environment they work in. The "skill issue" here is you thinking your basic knowledge of Vault matters.

> Software like Vault from hashicorp (it's FIPS compliant, too: https://developer.hashicorp.com/vault/docs/enterprise/fips) let you create a cryptographically-strong CA and build the automation you need.

They didn't tell you their needs, but you're convinced this vendor product solves it.

Are you a non-technical CTO by chance?

> there are equivalents for mac os and gnu/linux i guess

You guess? I'm sensing a skill issue. Why would you say it's solved for their environment, "I guess??"

> Quite the contrary: it means that the process is technically so trivial the masses can do it in an afternoon and live off it for years with little to no maintenance.

I'm sensing you work in a low skill environment if you think "home lab trivial" translates to enterprise and defense.

> Hence, if a large organization is not able to implement that, the issue is in the organization, not in the technology.

Absolutely meaningless statement.

ecb_penguin··on AGENTS.md – Open format for guiding coding agents
They are still called instruction sets.

> History doesn't repeat but it rhymes!

The only similarity is the word

ecb_penguin··on AGENTS.md – Open format for guiding coding agents
> So the solution to using AI so you don't have to code, is to try to write some kind of pseudocode in AGENT.md and hope the AI does a bit better?

Umm, no. Where did you get that idea?

The purpose of the agent.md file is to give it instructions. Nothing about no-code AI said there would be no instructions...

ecb_penguin··on AGENTS.md – Open format for guiding coding agents
That seems exactly like something you would want to tell another developer
ecb_penguin··on Copilot broke audit logs, but Microsoft won't tell customers
> CVEs are for vulnerabilities that are common across multiple products from multiple sources.

This is absolutely not true. I have no idea where you came up with this.

> Honestly, the worst thing about this story is that apparently the Copilot LLM is given the instructions to create audit log entries.

That's not at all what the article says.

> That’s the worst design I could imagine!

Ok, well, that's not how they designed it.

> This is just engineering 101.

Where is the class for reading 101?

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
> You know what works even better? Being a friendly and nice person.

Not mutually exclusive :)

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
I have interns with higher salaries and more purchasing power than senior devs in Europe.

It's remarkable what little you consider "proper".

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
They see I'm American and thus have more purchasing power than locals. They want some of that sweet sweet money, so they treat you better.
ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
> But I do know this is still the case in Japan. Some Japanese service workers or small business owners will even be insulted if you try to tip.

It's absolutely not. Have you actually been there, or are you repeating things?

https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravelTips/comments/1cyj0nu/ti...

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
Bud, literally nobody gives a shit about waiting on you. They are literally only doing it for the money.

People in Australia are still doing it for the money, even if you don't realize it.

ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
Yep. It's wonderful throwing a few extra bucks to some euro waiter and watching them treat you better than everyone else.
ecb_penguin··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
> Pay for your meal

Not sure you know what tipping is, but it's not paying for the meal. It's paying for the service.

1. I like being able to pay for better service

2. Despite what people like to think, everywhere in the world has appreciated tips. I've never had a waiter refuse extra money. Literally dozens of countries, you get better service if you tip.

ecb_penguin··on Elon Musk gives millions to Republican super PACs ahead of the midterms
"He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.

Then he talked about rockets. I don't know anything about rockets, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.

Now he talks about software. I happen to know a lot about software & Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit I've ever heard anyone say, so when people say he's a genius I figure I should stay the hell away from his cars and rockets."

ecb_penguin··on AI Researchers Are Negotiating $250M Pay Packages. Just Like NBA Stars
Good for them. They should take as much as they can from dumb investors.

If you think one person can generate $250M in revenue, go for it! But, I suspect that's why most companies can't make a dollar in profits.

ecb_penguin··on Big Tech Killed the Golden Age of Programming
That would be a golden economic age. We're talking about the craft of programming. They're different things.
ecb_penguin··on Big Tech Killed the Golden Age of Programming
You are spot on. People are confusing programming with money
ecb_penguin··on Big Tech Killed the Golden Age of Programming
Sure, all those things could be "corporate greed". Opposite actions in different environments don't change the intent.

> Aside from all the claims with no sources/references whatsoever

It's an opinion piece about many of our shared experiences.

> blaming "corporate greed" for hiring employees?

They explained their argument.

> Isn't it also "corporate greed" to lay people off?

It depends. A struggling company that needs to reduce workforce to survive? No. A company worth trillions laying off en-mass because stock rates are down? Yes, probably.

> Blaming corporate greed for causing high salaries?

They explained their argument in the article

> Let me guess, if they started cutting salaries, that is also corporate greed?

It depends. A struggling company that needs to reduce salaries to survive? No. A company worth trillions cutting salaries because stock rates are down? Yes, probably.

ecb_penguin··on AI is wrecking a fragile job market for college graduates
> It's the failure of CS programs that is causing job market issues for college graduates.

Definitely not. These failures have existed for decades. But it ultimately doesn't matter. You have the capacity to learn or you don't. CS programs are a waste of time, sure, but they have nothing to do with the job market.

I'd go so far as to say your comment is a perfect example of the problem. "kubectl" doesn't mean jack shit to being a good engineer. It's a technology we will use for a few years and then move onto something else.

Absolutely nobody is cutting junior positions because they don't know "kubectl"

The problem is developers are now DevOps, QA, PMs, Customer Support, and everything else.

ecb_penguin··on Mighty Memoirs – Children memory app
Everything wrong with this app

1. Kids should not talk to LLMs

2. Kids do not know enough to not share sensitive information with LLMs

3. As a parent, I struggle to appreciate their crayon drawings. An LLM generated story means absolutely nothing to me.

ecb_penguin··on Ask HN: Do You Block DigitalOcean?
Depending on your app, yes, you can block DO. You can probably block all of AWS and GCP as well. You can take it further and block all non-residential ASNs.

You'll block some legit traffic, but the majority of normal users will not be affected.

What is the persona of your average user? Average people shopping online? None of them are connecting through weird ASNs.

Someone complaining about a VPN being blocked? It's cost-benefit, tell them tough shit.

ecb_penguin··on Courts grapple with AI in the justice system
Lawyers and the legal system are the least capable of dealing with this. There's a reason why every in-house council needs outside representation. Because they don't know what they're doing.

They know what papers to file, but the actual arguments come from experts.

> AI can be very persuasive

Closing remarks are meant to be very persuasive. Let's not pretend like facts and evidence matters to the courts.

ecb_penguin··on [dead]
What a dumb opinion. The Nanjing Massacre is on par with what Israel is doing to Gaza.

> The parallels are too stark to ignore: entire communities annihilated, women’s bodies weaponized to humiliate nations, and atrocities proudly recorded.
