ecaron··on Simply Hired is shutting down June 26
<guess type="unresearched"> I'd wager that the investors started to evaluate the actual traffic sources and quality of the candidates going through their system. Upon investigating, although the traffic numbers were high they weren't legit. So rather than trying to right the ship, it didn't have a high enough ROI to save so they just sank it. </guess>

Another article with a lot of good data is http://recruitingheadlines.com/simplyhired-shutdown-latest-n..., and I think the Quantcast stat is worth a lot more consideration than the piece gives.

ecaron··on CertBot: Automatically enable HTTPS on your website with Let's Encrypt certs
Only free if you have Elastic Load Balancer running for each domain. If you're hosting a dozen micro-sites on a box, the Certificate Manager path gets a little expensive

/me looks at his February bill and remembers the lesson all too well

ecaron··on AWS IoT Button
Certainly not. I'll keep using the $5 counterpart and intercepting the packets in an inglorious-but-it-works way.
ecaron··on AWS IoT Button
Sadly, there's no affordable simple button that exists that matches what you're looking for. I've been hunting for it for 6+ months.

Competitors that I've been considering:

* https://bt.tn/

* https://www.particle.io/button

* https://flic.io/ (would have to be paired with a nearby Pi)

* http://www.dropletlife.com/ (not yet available)

My best recommendation would be build http://makeit.netflix.com/the-switch or go with the Particle option.

ecaron··on AWS IoT Button
Follow-up: This thread is getting a fair amount of heat, and let me foremost say that I love the button and think it'd work for the vast majority of people. Just as a child's nightlight, he pushes it probably 10 days a day (potty breaks, bad dreams, is it time to get up yet, etc). I'd also wager that my ARP-interception causes the board to consume more just the norm.
ecaron··on AWS IoT Button
Do you have a mailing list where we can sign up to know when you open it up? I almost immediately bought this, but thought "I should read up on the API first..." Reading the FAQ [https://flair.co/pages/faq] I see: "Can I write apps for Puck? Not yet. But soon."

I'll buy it the moment it lets me program it to suit my needs. It looks incredibly awesome and off the bat I can think of 4 places I'd love to use it (but none of them, unfortunately, have anything to do with heating or cooling).

ecaron··on AWS IoT Button
I hacked one of these to power the nightlight in my kid's bedroom (https://github.com/ecaron/hue-website-nightlights). The downside is that the button barely lasts for 1000 presses = 90 days (all kids like pushing buttons). And it is heart breaking because its just a AAA battery that they decided to solder in place...

I'm excited that this button launched. But $20 is too much for something without a swappable battery. I'll either keep intercepting the ARP packets from the $5 unit or buy https://www.particle.io/button.

ecaron··on Run with Postman: Test public APIs in 1-click right from the documentation page
At my company, we also share a ton of our collections internally (typically managed in git). My last meetup also covered the use of Postman, and showed off its ability to import from Swagger & RAML - and export into most language & cURL.

In short, I <3 Postman.

ecaron··on Solus 1.0 Released
Softpedia has a good article about the history of Solus - http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:qXMSxgM... (since Softpedia seems to be down at the moment.)
ecaron··on Vagrant 1.8 released
The biggest source of this confusion is the header of Otto's site - https://ottoproject.io/ - where it says "Meet the successor to Vagrant"
ecaron··on Mira: create simple read-only APIs from CSV files
You've got to respect a project with 44 commits but a Gemfile that hasn't changed since the very beginning - that's some very impressive planning!
ecaron··on Problems that warrant Docker orchestration
I'm not sold on the title of this article. It isn't about Docker Orchestration at all (an example of an article about orchestration would be https://blog.docker.com/2015/02/orchestrating-docker-with-ma...)

This article is just about the problems that warrant implementing an orchestration solution. It is only at the end that they hint about talking about how orchestration is actually accomplished in a "Next time we'll talk about..." teaser

ecaron··on Watch [Best Buy] Write [Their] New API Documentation
Yes, I'm not happy with this article's title. Basically I thought that Mailjet made a brilliant choice in open sourcing the process of crafting their API documentation[1], and Best Buy has decided to follow suit.

ecaron··on Dechoker medical device could end deaths by choking
For $150, it seems very overpriced to me. I expected this to be in the $30 range.

Am I missing some profound piece of engineering that warrants this price? Or is more of a "I think I can charge $X and make s 9x profit" move (which I don't fundamental object to.)

ecaron··on The ICANN Public Comments on WHOIS Privacy
The public "You should go voice your complaint" campaigns do more harm than good as far as ICANN goes.

In the end, it all comes down to ICANN typically just has one person review all the feedback - and when there's a mass write-in those typically get dismissed in bulk.

If you want a good example, check out how ICANN handled the .jobs adjustment in 2010 (http://forum.icann.org/lists/jobs-phased-allocation/pdfDrGz8...). Heartbreaking.

ecaron··on ES6: The features I'm most excited about
Wow. I can't believe template strings (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Refe...) aren't in this list. I'm incredibly excited to start having those at my disposal.
ecaron··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2015)
Best Buy - Minneapolis, MN - http://www.bestbuy-jobs.com/job/Richfield-Web-Engineering-As...

Best Buy is looking for an API Lead Engineer. What's the culture like? Well, look at https://developer.bestbuy.com/team - this is where you'll be. We're looking for somebody who is passionate about RESTful APIs and believes that APIs are the future of the web. We're also looking for someone who cares about encouraging API best-practices inside the building as much as they want to show it to the outside world.

The details of the tech stack are in the description, but the highlights of responsibilities and requirements:

- You want to help shape a culturally self-governed team

- You'll work on defining strategy and requirements and then leading feature and platform development

- You have experience in eCommerce technologies (ideally with Java and something like Dropwizard)

- You have experience with large database-driven applications and/or distributed computing

Email me - eric.caron@bestbuy.com - if you want to learn more!

ecaron··on CryptoPHP: Analysis of a hidden threat inside popular content management systems
Can someone tag the title [2014]?

ecaron··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
Its more the discipline that Vagrant creates in letting you repeatedly generate the same environment.
ecaron··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
"Forced" might be a strong word, and I'm new to non-startups so I don't know what kind of admin lock down is on the box. So I'm trying to do as I'm told until I have a reason I can't...
ecaron··on Online curl command line builder
@tuxone - Any chance of opening this up to accept PRs for adding new exposure to curl features (like adding headers)?
ecaron··on You Have to Hack This Massively Multiplayer Game to Beat It
Dead. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/primerist/code-hero-a-g...
ecaron··on Moving from PHP to Go and Microservices
"little interest in making one" is a bit of a bold statement... Sure a lot of the early Go users thought/preached "gdb is good enough", but I don't feel that's the case anymore.

For example, mailgun's https://github.com/mailgun/godebug looks very promising.

ecaron··on Bruce Schneier – The Setup
So he uses Windows 8.1, Eudora, Outlook, and Dropbox.

Yes, I would have gone 0 for 4 on guessing those... And I also would have wanted to know if its the out-of-the-box OS, or if he wipes & uses a vanilla installation.

ecaron··on Why We Chose Redshift
I wish he would talk about how they protect one customer from running a query that brings down the full stack. When we permitted Tableau to start talking to Redshift, we frequently encountered "Oh crap, Peter is running that query and and that's why everything is at a stand-still..."
ecaron··on How Betty, Who Is 89, Gets Her News
I know there's a valley startup - http://www.grandpad.net/ - making a hardware/software solution for this style of need. I'm not sure if they have the software part for this part of the application yet. I'll see if their live chat can weigh in...
ecaron··on Ask HN: Would the job postings be better with comments?
Totally agree with that assessment. If it becomes a place where only previously rejected candidates can voice their angst, then its all downhill...
ecaron··on Major Changes from Solr 4 to Solr 5
No. It'd be like preferring memcache over redis. You'll find warriors in both camps, but most people have forgotten there was a debate.
