Maybe it should be more explicit:

eboyjr··on “Good Luck with That” Public License
I am not a lawyer, but many may feel more comfortable if it included something like the following about having no implied warranties:

> THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.

Also, how can users "NEVER LEAVE A TRACE TO TRACK THE AUTHOR of the original product" if the author's full name and date of creation is meant to be included in the license?

eboyjr··on Compressing Networked State Data
Very cool. What kind of compression algorithms support this?
eboyjr··on Easing Functions Cheat Sheet
I'm not sure why or how it came up with cubic-bezier(0.445, 0.05, 0.55, 0.95) for easeInOutSine.

A more accurate representation of this piece of sin(t) would be cubic-bezier((pi - 2)/pi, 0, 1 - (pi - 2)/pi, 1) which evaluates to cubic-bezier(0.3633802276324187, 0, 0.6366197723675813, 1). (round where necessary)

This way, the tangents at the start and end remain horizontal. This also matches the function (1 - cos (pi x)) / 2 with a root mean square error of only about 0.000224528.

If you want to optimize excessively (why not?), you can minimize this error to about 0.00013 with cubic-bezier(0.364212423249, 0, 0.635787576751, 1). However, there is no closed form for these values as you end up attempting to integrate the cosine of a cubic polynomial.

eboyjr··on Are you scared yet? Meet Norman, the psychopathic AI
If it was trained on Google News it would just make more sense to me that it is a reflection of our journalists and possibly whatever algorithm Google uses to identify popularity, presumably a reflection of our society.
eboyjr··on Sky Book
It looks very well designed. How does this compare with Google Keep?
eboyjr··on Are you scared yet? Meet Norman, the psychopathic AI
> One study showed that software trained on Google News became sexist as a result of the data it was learning from. When asked to complete the statement, "Man is to computer programmer as woman is to X", the software replied 'homemaker".

> Dr Joanna Bryson, from the University of Bath's department of computer science said that the issue of sexist AI could be down to the fact that a lot of machines are programmed by "white, single guys from California" and can be addressed, at least partially, by diversifying the workforce.

Just curious but wouldn't this more likely be a result of a bias in the training data rather than the diversity of the programmers?

eboyjr··on Bypassing website anti-scraping protections
> we have developed a solution which removes the property from the web browser and thus prevents these kind of protections from figuring out that the browser is automated

Eli Grey and I have bypassed your "hideWebDriver()" function[1] in a single line of code:

    if (navigator.webdriver || (Navigator.prototype && Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptors(Navigator.prototype)["webdriver"])) {
// Chrome headless detected - navigator.webdriver exists or was redefined
    }

eboyjr··on Hand reading app with deep learning?
I know of no long-term studies of palm reading. In my view, this would be a gimmick.

However, you could machine learning to take a hand and output the following characteristics:

- whether it is a hand

- relative length, curvature, and forks of "head line"

- relative length, curvature, and forks of "heart line"

- relative length, curvature, and forks of "life line"

These factors can influence the selection from a finite set of traits that have a corresponding paragraph that the user can read. These would be written by a copywriter or taken from a palm reading guide.

eboyjr··on Artificial Neural Nets Grow Brainlike Navigation Cells
This supports the idea that, increasingly, machine learning is coming back full circle to support neuroscience. Previously, AI researchers looked at the brain for inspiration and now more than ever neuroscientists are being inspired by advances in deep learning, etc.
eboyjr··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
Since it helps the older generation to think about digital content in metaphors, I'd argue that the kid was entering through an open window of a public building. Although a bit strange, no one would give this hypothetical person a third look.

eboyjr··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2017)
OFTN Inc. | Android Developers, Electron Developers, Go & JavaScript (ES8) Developers | Part Time and Full Time | Remote | Hourly

We are building an application for Android and Windows that allows users to send audio with low-latency over a network. We need developers to make use of an API developed in C++ to create a user experience that customers will love. Applicants should have experience with either Android development, TypeScript and Electron, or C++ (and audio programming).

We are also building a peer-to-peer CDN for the browser. Applicants for this position should be comfortable in the Go programming language and the latest ECMAScript versions.

Since we are a remote operation, we are flexible with hours and will primarily coordinate tasks with collaborative chat.

Please send a resume and, if available, links to past work to jobs@oftn.org

eboyjr··on List of screw drives
This isn't directly my area of interest but the physics sure are interesting. I wonder if the space of screw drive shapes can be generated by a computer and evaulated with a fitness function that calculates the weight, profile, strength, contact area, for every given application.
eboyjr··on It's Almost 2015. Update Your Footer
Useful snippet. However I'd argue that in most cases it's deceiving to viewers of a site to tell them that content was recently changed or has been constantly changing when it's the same thing that's been there in the 90s.
eboyjr··on What is computing really good for?
It's definitely human nature to be lazy at times. In my opinion, no level of technology would ever change that. Back before computers we still had lazy people but they did less than lazy people now. At least now we have more time to learn to socialize even from the toilet.
eboyjr··on Gunning fog index
I love these random Wikipedia articles which end up being very interesting.

I do agree that the longer the sentence, the harder it is to read. I think a good improvement to this algorithm would be to have varying degrees of "complexity" based on the word popularity instead of having a binary classification of complex/non-complex. Instead of using a percentage of complex words like that formula does, you could use a weighted percentage based on the popularity of each word in a word frequency list. Or even better, you can measure the word-based information entropy contained in the writing sample.

Frequency lists are everywhere: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency_lists This has the added advantage of being able to use the dictionary tuned for your target audience is. As an example if you are targeting a system administrator, the index could be made more accurate by using a frequency list generated from UNIX man pages. (tongue-in-cheek)

eboyjr··on Ask HN: Why is the hacker scene so hostile to women and black people?
I think the underlying question should be, "Why are fewer and fewer women are attracted to the field?"
eboyjr··on Ask HN: Why is the hacker scene so hostile to women and black people?
Where do you see hostility? I run an open-source organization and it just so happens that not a lot of women programmers frequent on IRC which is where we have most of our discussions. I just don't see many women in the field let alone any hostility towards them.

Edit: Your mention of women and blacks remind me of this picture: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/8212496@N06/493885707
