Not for an operating system, but Astral’s `uv` tool has this for Python packages.

Source for this? I would be crestfallen because Kagi has been such a good product for me for the past year or so.

Well, I use Debian and Bash: pretty much everything to make my system work, including and especially Python development, is written in C, another language!

In my view, religion is the set of ideologies that plays the children’s game of one-upping each other’s numbers until one of the children says “infinity” and sticks fingers in ears, sayin the game is over.

By this I mean the religious ideological move is eternal punishment for what they deem unsatisfactory or eternal bliss for compliance, no other branch.

Other ideologies invoke similar (infinite growth in capitalism, e.g.) but those are hyperbole for proselytization. An ideology that attempts to persuade with either the most egregious stick possible or the most delicious carrot possible makes religion the least palatable of ideologies.

I was just about to ask what the difference is here with `ecapture`
ebb_earl_co··on Why are credit card rates so high?
I have operated under this model for about 10 years now as well. But there was a recent Atlantic article that gave me pause: those rewards are exactly the results of credit card companies’ usury, extracting money from other people.

It just doesn’t seem ethical to me (for my parameters) any more. :-/

ebb_earl_co··on Apple will soon support encrypted RCS messaging with Android users
This is great in principle. I still prefer Signal as the top-shelf experience of iOS—Android communication.

This seems like a good technique. What DNS software do you use?
ebb_earl_co··on Python 3.13.0 Is Released
This[0] is the Docker Python using Debian Bookworm, so as soon as 3.13.0 (not the release candidate I've linked to) is released, there will be an image.

Otherwise, there's always the excellent `pyenv` to use, including this person's docker-pyenv project [1]

ebb_earl_co··on Caddy 2.8
The release notes are voluminous which is heartening because I use Caddy in several places and I think it’s great software. Long may the fixes and features continue!
ebb_earl_co··on Llama 3 implemented in pure NumPy
On line 59, there is a less-than-or-equals comparison between 0 and 1. Curious https://github.com/meta-llama/llama3/blob/main/llama/model.p...
ebb_earl_co··on Could the cosmos, in fact, be conscious?
This is good reasoning, but from where did you get the requirements? After having read Annaka Harris’ “Conscious” and Philip Goff’s “Galileo’s Error”, it seems plausible to me (and the most logically simple resolution) that panpsychism explains the universe.

I.e., in the vain search for the place to draw “the line” between what animals or systems are conscious and which aren’t, (viruses? Amoebas? The smallest insect?) what if consciousness can be seen as a property of existence? Then, clearly, different systems (such as humans) have wildly different experiences (a.k.a. contents of consciousness) than rocks or shrimp or trees etc., but if you take Thomas Nagel’s phrasing for this—that if there is something it is like to be a rock or a shrimp or a tree, then that is conscious—then it seems to me that there IS something that it is like to be the cosmos.

ebb_earl_co··on AAC and Debian
Interesting. Could FFmpeg’s AAC en/decoder not be used? There’s an explicit flag necessary to include libfdk-aac when compiling FFmpeg and it makes the resulting binary not able to be shared.

However, without that flag, FFmpeg still has (their own? VideoLAN’s?) an AAC en/decoder that works fine.

ebb_earl_co··on Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
Thank you for an example with fruit. I am not trying to be thick, but your last paragraph confuses me. My point of reference is, say, lending $1,000 to a sibling who will pay me back within 2 weeks when he gets his paycheck. I gave him $1,000 and he will return me $1,000 so when and how would interest arise here? What axiom am I missing that makes his debt increase? Is it a choice by me to demand it?

*Whom did I suppose some people would say all of the workers who manufactured the glue and binding for the books and harvest the trees that constitute the books, and the truck drivers and ship captains who sent her books around the world. What a brilliant paragraph. I wish this developer all the success in the world.
