eastern··on What if OpenDocument used SQLite? (2014)
In sqlite the on-disk file format does not matter.

All that matters is that you should be able to issue sql to the sqlite embedded library and get back the results.

Freeing you from the overhead of owning (thus inventing and then maintaining) your own file format is almost the entire point of using sqlite in this manner.

eastern··on Ask HN: Why did Visual Basic die?
Yes, but I bet your code cannot reveal its own spaghetti:-)

Excel has long had an option to display 'precedent' and 'dependent' cells.

You can actually see the spaghetti right there.

eastern··on Ask HN: Why did Visual Basic die?
This is so true.

A cross platform Access-like front-end that used sqlite as the data storage engine would conqueror large parts the territory.

eastern··on An Internet of PHP
This, or variations, can happen with every kind of backend.

The only way to avoid to have the server open only to you till everything is tied down right and the backend is ready to face the world.

To rely upon being quicker on the draw than the bots is quite courageous.

eastern··on Did you know Git was originally created in 10 days?
TBH I always thought it was like one all-nighter
eastern··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the cloud killed the mainframe?
VISA does 500m+ transactions per day and Spanner does 1B queries per day, but it's quite unlikely that what a transaction means on VISA is the same as what a query means on Spanner.
eastern··on Why does email development have to suck? – Explaining all the <tr>'s and <td>'s
That's HTML emails _pretending_ to be plain text.

Meaning the 'plain' text is Html-formatted to look plain and there are tracker links and probably tracking pixels too.

Real plain text should be just like something a human being typed.

Also, ignoring the general scamminess of hubspot, the linked article says html mail is MORE likely to be flagged as commercial. The article, in fact, is entirely pro plain text.

eastern··on Google does little to reduce advertisers' costs
If one just rewrites that headline as 'Google does little to reduce its own revenue' it all becomes much clearer.
eastern··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
100%. Same here. There's a lot of baby in the processes, not just bathwater.

As a longstanding PG dev/DBA who doesn't know much about its internals, I would say that they should just move connection pooling into the main product.

Essentially, pgbouncer should be part of PG and should be able to manage connections with knowledge of what each connections is doing. That, plus, some sort of dynamic max connection setting based on what's actually going on.

That'll remove almost all the dev/DBA pain from separate processes.

eastern··on Fark redesign is now live (2007)
If anyone from reddit corporate is reading this, ignore every carping user and stay laser-focused on that IPO.

Being well-liked and poor is waaay worse than being rich and hated.

Stay strong

eastern··on Weapons firms influence the Ukraine debate
America's war goal is war. If Ukraine 'won' quickly, the next war may not be easy to find quickly. Better for everyone to keep this one going as long as possible.
eastern··on Euthanasia Is Not Healthcare
Let's respect the meaning of the word 'actual.'

Amend that to 'An actual look at what a CBC news report said that it looks like from a real patient.'

eastern··on Parachute use to prevent death, trauma when jumping from aircraft (2018) [pdf]
Yeah well the satire would have worked better if it were buried, although the real joke is 'minor caveat'.
eastern··on Parachute use to prevent death, trauma when jumping from aircraft (2018) [pdf]
This para, buried deep in the paper, is the point:

A minor caveat to our findings is that the rate of the primary outcome was substantially lower in this study than was anticipated at the time of its conception and design, which potentially underpowered our ability to detect clinically meaningful differences, as well as important interactions. Although randomized participants had similar characteristics compared with those who were screened but did not enroll, they could have been at lower risk of death or major trauma because they jumped from an average altitude of 0.6 m (SD 0.1) on aircraft moving at an average of 0 km/h (SD 0). Clinicians will need to consider this information when extrapolating to their own settings of parachute use

Real studies have an equivalent para far too often.

eastern··on Severance payments at Wikimedia Foundation
Edits might be for sale for things that matter to companies.

Every Public Relations agency claims to 'manage' the content on clients' Wikipedia pages.

eastern··on Venture Predation
This paper is not about grabbing most of the market etc and eventually making a profit. As the abstract quoted above says, it's about creating an illusion that this can be done so as to sell stock to a greater fool. Uber was quite successful at this, as were many others.

Really, from the pov of Travis Kalanick and the original funders, Uber is a fabulously successful business.

The original founders and the venture predators made their money. The professional execs at the top running the business now are also making lots of money. It doesn't matter to any of them what happens to competitors, employees and current shareholders.

eastern··on India's Alphonso mangoes are virtually impossible to find in America (2018)
Agree 100%.

Alphonsos are HUGELY over-rated and that's actually a common opinion in India.

I feel they're basically fake mangoes meant for exporting at high prices to foreigners who have no clue what a mango should actually taste like. That weird jelly-like pulp is actually repulsive if you're used to a Chausa or a Langda or so many other great mangoes.

eastern··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Yeah for questions like this ChatGPT sounds like someone who's being paid by the word.

Always says 200 words where 30 would suffice.

eastern··on Epstein's Private Calendar Reveals Prominent Names, Including CIA Chief
There is nothing of news interest here except the WSJ doing the story.

The story itself is the only real story.

Who got this story done? What is the goal? Who is being thrown under the bus and who isn't? Is it anticipatory misdirection because something else is about to come out and can't be controlled?

etc etc

eastern··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Yeah no one will bother with such a low-powered device. I used an in-car bluetooth-to-FM tranmitter bought from Amazon India for years. They've been sold openly since forever. Like this one: https://www.amazon.in/Portronics-AUTO-10-Bluetooth-Car/dp/B0...
eastern··on Ways to shoot yourself in the foot with Postgres
100%. Exaggerating the bigness of their own data is a common phenomena. Sometimes one is talking to a group of developers who are all so impressed with this bigness but every one of them has a phone in their pocket which could fit their entire dataset.
eastern··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Privatisation has nothing to offer if there is no competition.

If there is no competition possible--and there are so many other situations apart from airport security--then a publicly owned provider is better. There _are_ some things that are a natural monopoly but if there must be a monopoly then it should be a government one.

A private monopoly is the worst of all worlds.

eastern··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
True. It's a false idea that privatisation improves anything. Most private good and services are better because of competition, not because of the ownership.

If privatisation means opening up a line of business to all comers, it's good. When it means a limited number of suppliers chosen by an authority, it's almost always worse.

eastern··on SQL Maxis: Why We Ditched RabbitMQ and Replaced It with a Postgres Queue
A column in the database identifying which 'queue' is all you need for that. The table is not a queue, it's a structure to store queues.
eastern··on Plane Lands/Takes Off in Only 20 Feet (2013)
True. The Fieseler Storch first flew in 1936 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fieseler_Fi_156_Storch at could do this.

Some are still flying, according to the Wikipedia page

eastern··on 'Project Fear’ authors discussed when to ‘deploy’ new Covid variant
Most of all, it's about the attitude that the tone of the conversation reveals.

Also, the behaviour of this very lot at the time, as was revealed later.

They're mocking people, enjoying the absolute power that they have gained.

eastern··on Mass of transactions leaving crypto.com wallets
100%. People are being fooled by the word Exchange. It makes them think that this is the same category as NYSE or NASDAQ.

Exchange should be a sort of a reserved word, like bank.

eastern··on Ask HN: Is there a list of richest based on liquid assets not stock wealth?
The liquidity of anyone's stock holding depends entirely on how much one holds compared to how much is routinely traded on the markets.

If I own 0.01 percent of any heavily-traded stock, it's 100% liquid. I can sell it whenever I want at a moment's notice. In any such accounting it will be added to my liquid wealth. But if I own 25% of the same stock, it's illiquid.

If I also run the company, then it's worse because any attempt to sell a large part of my holding will itself trigger a crash in the price.

eastern··on Life after Heroku: What's a dev to do?
Yeah but you should count the legal expenses for parsing the Terms & Conditions :-)

This is Oracle. You weren't thinking of agreeing to to the T&Cs without understanding what they actually mean, were you?

eastern··on India fines Google $162M for anti-competitive practices on Android
This is a complete fabrication. Aadhaar verification via biometrics was permitted for all financial, telecom and other services simultaneously. I got fingerprinted for an Airtel SIM and a Kotak Bank account first and Jio much later.
