eastbound··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
It's sad that open source / open-internet projects always have a clunky design. Here, the main screenshot, at the top, uses a monospaced System font. You might as well display a terminal and it's a wrap. To appeal to broader audiences:

- You both need to trigger the potential OSS contributors, with references to Debian, Ubuntu maybe, and appeal to big donors, which is another topic entirely,

- And ALSO have a design that triggers the broader audiences and therefore, very "turnkey", very packaged, very "Comment like and subscribe", one-click install on your NAS, etc. Privacy is then a characteristic but services are the real features.

eastbound··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Yes.

Also to note, why was the US trusted before? I think it's a heritage from the Marshall plan: The US saved us twice from Germany, therefore we owe them our nations and storing our gold there won't change much. A century later, it does.

I'd rephrase the question as: Would you trust your parents? In childhood years probably, because you owe them your education anyway.

eastbound··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
You can fix companies by voting a government too. In fact, governments are quicker at fixing companies than themselves.
eastbound··on Why do so many tools have JSON config files?
Let me guess... if they're a form of Lisp, did someone add jndi support, then made it possible to print to the console while the string gets read and finally made it executable because who wouldn't want a LISP for-loop in an Oracle connection string? On to the next RCE...
eastbound··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
That's my memory of Sydney to. In Europe we sold every land parcel, reduced their habitat (forests) to 100m blocks, then 50m, then a public park with scientific studies used to justify that they'll be better off in the park... then they die. Turns out all scientific studies are paid out by promoters and everyone has a price.
eastbound··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Up to the governments to require the split-up of companies which become too large. Up to the governments to avoid corruption.

"The bribe was too seducing" is not a valid defense for citizens. The fact the gouvernements have an armed branch to enforce hegemony makes it more required, not more forgivable.

eastbound··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Did the person above you say that the DSA suggests that the states should run public grocery stores, and did you gloss over it, parodying him?

Wouldn't you recognize that bad faith characterizes the DSA lines?

eastbound··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
CHAZ was an idealistic symptom of applying John Lennon's Imagine to a neighborhood of Seattle, and it wasn't the only city tempted by this endeavor (if only it didn't finish with an arms dealer taking leadership of the locality);

"Defund the police" was a campaign slogan at last election.

I'm looking from Europe and I'm often impressed how extreme american leftists are. If it's not socialism, it sure shares the same conclusions. And yet "The most extreme left in the US is the most extreme right wing for Europe" is a common belief.

eastbound··on Three important steps in my maturation process
True, I have not fully understood the direction therapists go to, apart from expliciting your thought process.

My interpretation of therapy is that it helps you feel aligned with you. It will remove the surface contradictions and counter-actions. But if your deeper you has concluded that you should be evil (assuming there is no contradictions in this view - and there always is), therapy will probably help you too. As long as you are aligned with yourself.

They prioritize you. Not the others.

eastbound··on Three important steps in my maturation process
Did you include meeting with a therapist? The problem is that they have to reveal you things you don't generally want to admit, so it takes a bit of time (time which I find absolutely wasted) and depending on the therapist, they might not tell you immediately about your inconsistencies.
eastbound··on Three important steps in my maturation process
Thank you for your perseverance. We need testimonials like this to remind that our life isn't hard compared to this; And yet you have surprisingly chosen peace so far (congrats, and thank you).

> 1. never miss a lecture, no matter what

As a student of a top-tier French Master's degree, I consulted with a teacher to deal with exhaustion and to ask for a class rescheduling for my case. Explaining my situation, the teacher looks at me and interjected:

—Waitwaitwait. You... you went to all lectures!?

And he was right. Rather than following the curriculum, I should have developed my taste for various engineering topics and only used the classes as entertainment.

eastbound··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
You say your team is remote "anyway", but RTO precisely is about connecting with other people OUTSIDE your team, working on internal politics, and you act as an interconnection point between the remote team and the local network.
eastbound··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
SOC2 and other compliance frameworks will take charge of making those flags compulsory, with the threat of being uninsured and willfully personally responsible in case of breach.

At least computers of all other normal workers would be locked down; Those of developers could have development tools but certainly shouldn't be able to connect to production servers or have customer invoicing data in them. Maybe buy two computers for developers with legal tasks? Win-win for Apple.

You say force a diet change on a patient. OP certainly meant forcing a diet change in the input of American factories. Sugar can be found in fruits. That's the right place. If you need some, use fruits, maybe alcohol. Everything else can be slashed. No sugar in prepared meals anymore. No sugar in pasta anymore. And most of all, no sugar in water. Sugar input makes more damage than cocaine today.

We can call it the Prohibition II. There will be underground bars with sick people binging on sugar. We can change the shape of sugar to prevent restaurants from adding it to food. We can make it bitter. Absolutely need sugar? Eat that lemon-tasting block. We can call it The War On Sugar.

You may have a black eye about History.

Rwanda came for help to France 2 years before, and France conditionned its financial help to a democratisation process.

- From here, about 150 parties got born.

- The previous dictatorship, even of the majority, was protecting the minority, because they knew the international consequence on countries who don't protect the minorities.

- Once a democracy, it was a leadership of the majority ethnicity (90% Hutu) so you bet they had no qualms about protecting the Tutsis. Tensions and invitation to violence soared immediately, but in a coveted speech.

- A plane containing half the government was bombed, the country woke up without clear leadership, elections didn't happen fast enough. Citizen acted with their own machetes.

Democracy means the majority owns the decisions. Doesn't mean they'll be good people.

eastbound··on Fastmail offers EU data region
It is a success. UK leaving the EU is a form of democracy. People should have the means to choose their destiny, just like the Bengladeshi or the Timor people.

What is not a success is:

- The EU taking retaliation against them,

- The EU parties overturning members of the Leave party into the Libdem, AFTER being elected (yes, it happened for 16 members, plus the ones who didn't officially switch but stalled the Leave party's proceedings),

- From the moment they clearly voted NO, it took 3 more votes until they could be allowed to leave. Basically, it was until it was clear the UK citizenry would be entirely blocking the democratic process until the EU-Leave decision was enacted. You can understand people's despair of democracy when a clear LEAVE vote isn't enacted, like in France 2005.

In the rest of the EU, they're too chicken to let us vote. But they will let us vote... one day... only in areas where they're guaranteed a large STAY result.

The EU is only letting us vote when the answer is Yes.

eastbound··on Fastmail offers EU data region
No, he has a point. There are various degrees of democracy, between direct and many degrees of indirection. VDL is certainly not a good level of democracy:

- Elections are so rare (every 5 years) and encompass so many huge life-altering choices (VDL being one of the criteria only) that it's not democratic. The Swiss vote every important law, like "Should we buy fighter jets".

- De facto, party health is part of democracy (look at the Rwanda: It is absolutely possible to have a genocide made by democracies, and it is in fact more frequent than dictatorships) and network effects have made that European parties don't represent the people's will,

- Europe dispatches money to countries that need convincing, like Scottland, while wearing the mature members' citizen to the bone. We can't even have decent roads or internet here, while newcomers are super-happy to join ("I'm happy because Europe brought wealth and economic development!!!" - yeah look in 20 years). Money flushing around Europe trying to bribe citizens groups into staying, which makes opposition impossible. The EU is too chicken to let citizen vote every 20 years on whether we should stay in Europe, because then answer would be a big NO.

- The kill switch didn't even work, countries can't leave, or there is retaliation. Not only UK but France voted against the new treaties in 2005, the president still signed them.

The EU is the most lazy level of democracy. It's a knee-jerk reaction to say that VDL can be removed from office by the citizen.

One would argue the kids got paid for finding a dangerous place and entering. Up to the building owner to prevent access. It’s a form of giant bug bounty.

eastbound··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
That’s an error. Most capitalists are against government intervention.

It’s EU socialists who want to raise poor people to the level of consumerism of rich ones. Not capitalists. Capitalists would be happy to let them be poor.

In the EU, it’s trying to help-and-attract poor people by millions which strains the Earth. In the US it’s a special breed of capitalism where the state colludes with rich people to subsidize the big corporations at the detriment of nature and citizen.

eastbound··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
That’s a perverse incentive against ecology, case in point. Hear me out. We take citizen’s money to subsidize energy so they can get their energy for cheaper (at marginal level - while still paying the subsidy’s taxes) so they can undertake industrial/residential projects that we wouldn’t do with less energy. In a word, we incentive people to consume more (in a consumerist sense), which is bad for ecology, because we can’t afford them, and neither can the Earth.

Of course, leaving aside how petroleum is subsidized [through the department of defense].

While ecologists usually are in favor of subsidies, subsidies incentive people to consume more, which exhausts our Earth. We should develop less, i.e. we should develop in accordance with a higher facial cost of energy, which sometimes implies having a smaller home and fewer industries, which is what would happen if we didn’t sponsor solar or wind energy [or coal or fossil].

What means do you see? Buy some S&P500 ETF and live off the interest rate? That seams easy but without investing in AI, you’re at risk of AI making the existing economy irrelevant, it’s the same as having all investments in local craftsmanship in 1700 and the steam machine happens, except much faster.

And move to [insert home country]? (What if I want to keep my friends)

Horrible startup idea: Discrimination as a service, by means of IA without pretending it’s IA.
