eastWestMath··on AI Playbook
That's still remarkably grandiose.
eastWestMath··on Why do many math books have so much detail and so little enlightenment? (2010)
That rant is a bit ridiculous to post here - the foundations of computer science is largely the result of mathematicians who weren't particularly interested in physics.
eastWestMath··on Why do many math books have so much detail and so little enlightenment? (2010)
I recognized a few of the names who deleted the post to be fine mathematicians who have contributed quite a bit to mathoverflow, so I don't think that applies. Mathoverflow is a Q&A site for professional mathematicians, you may have it confused with math.se.
eastWestMath··on Why do many math books have so much detail and so little enlightenment? (2010)
Mathoverflow is the Q&A site for professional mathematicians, not math.se where it may have been more appropriate.
eastWestMath··on Ask HN: Why there is no Codecademy for ML or AI?
It's called an M.Sc.
eastWestMath··on Thousands of Veterans Want to Learn to Code But Can’t
Web developers who churn out crud apps think that.
eastWestMath··on Chromebooks winning in schools, Windows and Apple fight back
Apple is still the most profitable laptop/desktop producer in the world, but that market is dwarfed by the smartphone market.
eastWestMath··on Category Theory, Syntactically (2016)
They're still objects in that category...
eastWestMath··on Building a Better Teacher (2010)
Is Teach for America the one that recruits Ivey league grads and drops them into classrooms in inner city classrooms? I always thought it was a wonderful microcosm of everything wrong with the US system. The exact situation where you need experienced teachers with deep ties to their community is where they put Ivey league grads with no training, experience, or shared life experiences with the students due to their wildly different socioeconomic class. It even has the "white saviour" complex baked into it.
eastWestMath··on Category Theory, Syntactically (2016)
I think you mean that A is an object of your category...
eastWestMath··on Apple cuts App Store affiliate commission from 7% to 2.5%
...You think Paypal is a competitor to the app store?
eastWestMath··on Apple cuts App Store affiliate commission from 7% to 2.5%
They make the hardware and the operating system!
eastWestMath··on The Guardian Pulls Out of Facebook’s Instant Articles and Apple News
The Russian puppet narrative isn't exactly a conspiracy theory, several important members of his team have stepped down due to their ties with Russia. And the Russians are behind the hack into the DNC's email servers.
eastWestMath··on Theranos Secretly Bought Outside Lab Gear, Ran Fake Tests: Court Filings
Any chance those physicians will be facing investigations?
eastWestMath··on 'Fight Inequality' Is a Poor Rallying Cry
Well Western society has, by and large.
eastWestMath··on Tesla's Musk Paid at Least $593M in Income Taxes in 2016
Then you'd end up having a fairly stupid argument about the semantics of "better".
eastWestMath··on Tesla's Musk Paid at Least $593M in Income Taxes in 2016
Isn't this is case in point that you're wrong?
eastWestMath··on 'Fight Inequality' Is a Poor Rallying Cry
And being tall doesn't mean you'll be a great basketball player, but it makes it way fucking easier.
eastWestMath··on 'Fight Inequality' Is a Poor Rallying Cry
>That means that if you live in a more impoverished neighborhood, you're stuck with whatever school you're assigned to instead of being able to shop around, and for a lot of impoverished neighborhoods, that means schools with bad teachers and administrators, and there is no way out of it. This is a huge problem in black communities, and one area where the right legislation could make a significant impact.

Fuck us for wanting to fix those impoverished schools, right?

eastWestMath··on 'Fight Inequality' Is a Poor Rallying Cry
Jesus fucking christ dude, it's not about giving parents the opportunity to see their children be successful. It's about giving children the chance to be successful.
eastWestMath··on Louisiana’s Governor Declares State Of Emergency Over Disappearing Coastline
That's not at all what he said.
eastWestMath··on Scientists Aging Faster Than Other Workers
Right but someone who has a realistic chance at being hired as a professor won't be working as a commodity software engineer, they'll be in some sort of specialist/research role. Any of the job offers I've seriously considered leaving were to be a computer scientist.
eastWestMath··on Scientists Aging Faster Than Other Workers
That is, of course, a very silly cultural thing they'd be better off without. My supervisor spent a decade in industry before returning to academia, and he's a pure mathematician/logician.
eastWestMath··on Chrome 55-57 showed “download” button for all HTML5 media
There's a big difference between "we have a good relationship so I'll do X" and forcing third parties to enforce those protections. Those content provides aren't required to distribute their product and once a proper framework is set up for their situation there's no reason other people can't use it.
eastWestMath··on Ex-Professor Says Dismissed Racketeering Case Is Still ‘Devastating’
Also, professors do steal money. There's all sorts of guidelines at my university now about how grant money can be used because a prof in the medical school used a grant for cancer research to renovate his kitchen (more or less).
eastWestMath··on Physicists attempt to prove the Riemann hypothesis
When all you have is a golden hammer...
eastWestMath··on The Town of Innisfil partners with Uber for transit instead of buses
I dunno, I'm pretty happy in a country where all the major universities are public and the healthcare system is socialized.
eastWestMath··on The Town of Innisfil partners with Uber for transit instead of buses
Are younkt from the UK or US? I know for a fact that both countries have funded great work in accessibility and web design when setting the standards for federal government websites.
eastWestMath··on The Town of Innisfil partners with Uber for transit instead of buses
I kind of hate how people on the right can cut government funding and then turn around and complain that the underfunded programs are functioning poorly.
eastWestMath··on Every attempt to manage academia makes it worse
But that was the result were two academics recognizing a diamond in the rough. An MBA-type concerned with metrics would never even have accepted him for graduate studies.
