Typed assembly is a thing - it’s mainly to ensure the compiler itself is correct, but it does give stronger guarantees. I think Frank Pfenning at CMU has written a language that’s dependently typed all the way down - so it’s IR and assembly are both dependently typed.
Wouldn’t you be paying sales/service tax on Google ads, and by not paying for its own ads Google circumvented those taxes giving itself a competitive advantage?
>Yet there are still people who do not need this guidance and who are still making equally moving contributions but are not recognized or rewarded for their work.
And there’s substantially more people spinning their wheels and wasting their time, and they don’t even know enough to understand what they’re doing uninteresting.
>Also by receiving grant money in your name you are paying to go to university.
What does that even mean. You realize that working for free on an open source project is closer to “paying to work on a project”, right?
That’s exactly why saying our projects get recognition “just because we’re paying for a degree” is insulting. Getting into these research groups and receiving funding is usually pretty competitive, and we spend a lot of time on these projects while being supervised by experts. It should not be hard to believe that this leads to better work.
>Why should a person who pays a university to give them a project to do get a degree and recognition
I have a few issues with this comment. I am a graduate student and while I personally work on the theory side, I have labmates involved in these sorts of projects.
We have to get chosen to work on a project (accepted to grad program, given funding, taken on as a student by a PL researcher) - these steps are all based on the merits of our undergraduate work, we are not simply paying to work on the project. We are directed by an expert in the field, given mentoring, and work on our projects 30-50 hours a week. It should not be surprising that most significant recognition-worthy work in programming language theory occurs in this environment.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure a lot of IRA funding came out of Boston. Turns out there were children and grandchildren of potato famine refugees who were still pretty pissed - who’d have thunk it.
As someone else pointed out, the deprecation of AFP was announced over 4 years ago, 8 years into this servers lifespan (it’s a 2006 model, right?). This was a problem their network administrator should have been aware of for 4 years, that’s probably enough time to figure out a solution!
Well if you’re not aware of an artists politics you can easily find yourself consuming propaganda. It’d be foolish not to exercise any restraint in that regard.
Should viewers have decided whether or not Weinstein should still be producing movies? There’s clearly a point where the press around someone becomes too toxic to have a close business relationship with them.
The market did handle it, there was enough bad press for YouTube so that it was no longer a good business decision to continue their partnership with Paul.
I’m a category theorist so I’m going to nitpick - the claim that all concrete mathematical objects are specific sets is either tautological (a concrete category is literally one where each object has an underlying set) or untrue (I can think of several non-concrete categories that may be studied “concretely” using type theory, such as the microlinear spaces of synthetic differential geometry).
Yeah the entire NCAA system is basically funded by young men playing basketball and football, a few who are objectively being cheated out of millions of dollars (because the ncaa lobbies the nfl and nba to have minimum age requirements).
I don’t know a why you’re getting downvoted. I find, at least in my department, international students don’t get the same opportunities Canadians do. There’s definitely an archetype of a CS professor who does “interdisciplinary research” with a stable of international students doing software development projects for the bio and medicine departments.
It’s been a while since I’ve done serious statistical work (I’m a logician. There’s many different kinds of distributions (i.e. lines through a field), from which you would make very different inferences - relationships which satisfy a power law can of look like a Gaussian/normal distribution. Finding the “right” distribution when you know you’re working with incomplete data isn’t simple.
I can assure you they aren’t trying to make the math look scary - to be a bit blunt, a comment like that’s usually a sign that someone hasn’t made a serious attempt to engage with a field. That sort of bad faith regarding a core discipline of the mathematical sciences probably should be downvoted.
How does this work with packages like TiKZ or TiKZ-CD? Right now I’m perfectly happy with auctex and aquamacs, but if this did real-time tikz rendering then I would be sold.
I don’t know why it has to be one of the other, university generally isn’t vocational training. I know lots of people who went to university and then did a trades program, I don’t think any of them really regret getting their degree. Of course this was Canada and nobody had racked up 60-80k in debt.
Eh, everyone but the set theorists ignores the set theorists at this point. I think some exciting things happened in the 60's with forcing, but a lot of the subsequent developments seem pretty contrived.
I think there's some pretty high variance in the quality of machine learning PhDs - some professors are pretty upfront that they have a team of graduate students throwing algorithms at datasets and seeing what sticks. I can't imagine that approach trains great researchers.
No, I’m saying sophistry contributes nothing to the conversation. I don’t care about convincing you about the subject at hand: you have the opinion of someone who’s invested too much into justifying their ignorance to actually pick up a textbook and learn the relevant material.
No, I’m pretty sure there’s a pretty large body of academic and industrial research on proving program correctness that you can’t just hand wave away with sophistic “but what if your type signature is wrong” nonsense. And there’s a huge difference between a test and a proof - a test can only tell you a program doesn’t do what you think it should for a particular case, a proof tells you that your program does exactly what it is supposed to.
