earleybird··on I have resigned all my positions in ISO C++ in protest
His debt will be paid in full when the victim has been "made whole". The nature of the crime means the victim will likely never be whole again. Also, forgiveness is not absolution.
earleybird··on The next shock for homeowners: Surging property tax assessments
It doesn't matter if assessments are high or low. It just matters that your particular assessment is equitable with respect to your neighbours. What matters is the mill rate. If your taxes have gone up it's because your taxing authority has decided to raise more money.

Reporters that conflate assessments with taxes raised are lacking basic numeracy.

earleybird··on Lavender's Game: Silexan for Anxiety
My regime is 100mg first thing in the morning resulting in minor flushing 20-30 after taking. Throughout the day, 500mg at a time with often no flushing, staying at or under 2000 mg total for the day. It's very effective at managing my cholesterol and seems to improve joint inflamation. I'll do this for 3 months then stop for a month to 6 weeks.
earleybird··on Long-Term Building in Japan
There are 300+ yr old timber frame barns etc in Europe, so it seems to be plausibly a net zero impact.
earleybird··on Ask HN: Why are people in real life so different?
The idea that there are folks who believe that people with differing opinions should be punished that I find disturbing.
earleybird··on FAA changes course on eVTOL certification
Why yes, yes I am :-)

My back yard, and anyone elses.

earleybird··on Does Time Exist?
Given distance, velocity and time; choose any two as physical and the third will be emergent. Choose according to the view you want to explore.
earleybird··on New current thing just dropped: “algorithmic justice”
Better do something about that California math curriculum - replace that boring calculus cruft with some proper discrete math :-)
earleybird··on How Much Garden You Would Need to 100% Survive On
Absolutely.

For example, grains are so fundamental to human survival in large part due to the fact that it can be stored over multiple years/seasons. Try doing that with potatoes.

earleybird··on For most Americans, owning a home is now a distant dream
"Just move" is what humans have done since time immemorial. There are folks who complain and those who act.
earleybird··on Loss of Native American Languages Affects Our Understanding of the Natural World
I agree that it is important to preserve these languages and have the same concern about the claim. I'm inclined to believe that it is experiencing the natural world that builds understanding. Expressing that understanding is separate from the understanding itself.
earleybird··on Hiring discrimination: a problem for men in female-dominated occupations
Perhaps parent meant private, as in keeping your age private as it wouldn't make sense to be anonymous if your expecting to be paid :-)

earleybird··on Google Docs will “warn you away from inappropriate words”
The way languages are used - common usage is almost certainly correct. Correct is whatever is agreed upon by conversation participants. Correct in one group ain't necessarily so in another.
earleybird··on Europe's now-drowned 'lost world' and the 25m-high tsunami that finished it off

With you on "driving to the conditions". Although just because your vehicle can stop quickly doesn't mean that unmaintained civic can do the same when you go flying past and then hard brake.

My one hope for self driving vehicles is that it normalizes efficient traffic flow.

earleybird··on How destructive are nuclear weapons really?
3rd paragraph, although parent may have a typo - rather than 300 - 800 it says 300 - 500

In practice, most strategic nuclear warheads today are in the 300-500 kT range, with tactical weapons being smaller. If we take the American W88 (455 kT) as representative of this range

earleybird··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
Case in point, had a meeting at the beginning of this week where the meeting request 'accept' included "we might have to cut short this meeting should the sirens sound, thank you for your patience". Brings things into sharp focus.
earleybird··on We decided to move 90% of our workload from the cloud to on-prem infrastructure
Dang it all, we had 20+ teletypes hanging off a 32Kb PDP-8 (with DECTape for random access storage), "and we liked it!" :-)

earleybird··on AI predicts if and when someone will experience cardiac arrest
Thanks for the link.

I need to choose words better - rather than "dark arts" I probably should have said "tacit knowledge". I certainly didn't mean to imply that arrhythmias are not well studied, rather, my hope is that we can use AI methods to do better science.

side note: I know EEs who claim antenna design is a black art :-) It also is well studied and yet according to some, it appears magical at times.

earleybird··on AI predicts if and when someone will experience cardiac arrest
My very tangential observations in the cardiology domain is that it is in some respects a dark art that requires years, perhaps decades of experience to understand underlying mechanisms. While this certainly looks promising in a person / not person recognition kinda way; I'm hoping it can shed some insight the interaction between scarring and conductivity that leads to arrhythmias.
earleybird··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
The scenario allowed in your reference is not the same. The original scenario was a rental/income property declare principle (for some short period of time) for the purpose of shielding capital gains whereas the exemption you reference is a principle residence allowed to be used for rental/income. Note that you cannot declare another property as principle while you're renting out your homebase. I expect it is meant for cases where you might take a job transfer for a period of time.

The taxman never leaves money on the table.

earleybird··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
The CRA is fairly particular[0] about income from the sale of a property. They want to know, for example, how long it has been your primary residence and if it was rented before then, what was the appraised value. You will end up paying capital gains on the delta. So, if you've been renting out a property, move in to it for 6 months and then sell you'll be paying capital gains on everything but the last 6 months. The only time that works out is with a sudden spike in values.

[0] source: an accountant I know that wants to stay in good standing with the CRA :-)
