Absolutely disgusting what the government there is doing to our Australian brothers and sisters. And of course no media coverage to speak of in the states.
In web development in particular I hope this will lead to a reexamination of lost ideas, such as the hypermedia architecture. I think you are seeing that with things like Hotwire and htmx.
So I would look to ideas from the past, perhaps abandoned today, for things to inspire us.
People in tech are generally terrified of saying “this seems too complicated” because it sounds close to “I’m not smart.” Combine with the snow-job culture of tech sales and, well, you get what we’ve ended up with.
Hotwire and htmx do this
Perfection.
Method signature changes, class hierarchy, all of it.
He wasn’t a sun employee at the time and the sun folks kept telling him what he was doing was impossible. We ended up using his stuff, the dcevm, internally for a long time.
He was eventually hired by sun/oracle to work on other stuff and Java still doesn’t have proper hotswap.
That’s the tech world for you.
she’s young
maybe you need to experience that to develop some humility
That is unacceptable and therefore things will continue to get worse.
aaand it’s gone
One night in bed I realized that if someone hit submit on the delete screen without filling in any criteria it would just delete the whole database.
Not a fun drive in.
Yes, we drove in in those days.
False dichotomies are lazy.

Very useful when you are wiring events together on the front end.
Surprised there isn’t a standard way to do this in the DOM.
I don’t have a strong opinion on alternatives. GraphQL seems ok for server to server stuff.
Look at the REST/JSON API debacle that has unfolded over the last two decades. It is trivially obvious that REST is both difficult to implement and largely pointless outside of a hypermedia system, but the thought leaders never said a thing about it.
Making it the entire basis for application abstraction is lunacy, the sort of extremely clever idiocy that can only occur in the tech world.
Condemning the stack is a novel entry point, I’ll admit.
It would be funny, if these folks didn’t wield so much power.
