e2le··on New accounts on HN more likely to use em-dashes
That is a probable outcome however it would at least cap or limit the ability of bot farms to produce industrial sludge content.

> human using AI to 'improve' the quality of their comment

I want to hear people in their own voice, their own ideas, with their own words. I have no interest in reading AI generated comments with the same prose, vocabulary, and grammar.

I don't care if your writing is bad.

Additionally, I am sceptical that using AI to write comments on your behalf creates opportunities for self-improvement. I suspect this is all leading to a death of diversity in writing where comments increasingly have an aura of sameness.

e2le··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
No system is flawless. Every democratic system has its own issues. What is increasingly clear is that the current crop of tech billionaires do not belong anywhere near a position of power. God help us. The quality of individual is disappointing.
e2le··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
People aught to be questioning more the future vision of those in positions to shape it. Someone who struggles with such simple questions around humanity while simultaneously building the tools of a surveillance state probably should not be one of the individuals driving our future.

It's quite clear that my vision of the future is nothing like theirs.

e2le··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
Some might even agree with their dystopic vision of the future.
e2le··on Oat – Ultra-lightweight, zero dependency, semantic HTML, CSS, JS UI library
Perhaps stolen accounts? I doubt every user is practising good security hygiene with a unique password per each account. Password leaks from other sites might well allow a motivated individual to hijack some here.
e2le··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
> There are tariffs everywhere, all the time.

This neglects the scale, cost, and unpredictability. His tariffs are far from being the usual seen elsewhere. Of course, you should already understand this.

e2le··on Devuan – Debian Without Systemd
One feature of the Journal format which I don't believe to be a great design choice is that entries can contain non-unique fields. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be something that is handled well by all tools, instead only returning the value for the first field of an entry with the provided name.
e2le··on Devuan – Debian Without Systemd
Personally I would much rather they had simply used an existing database file format. For example, sqlite3 which is robust and already present in the default installation of most Linux distributions. Querying system logs with SQL would be cool and make things a bit easier unlike the sd_journal API with it's strange/bizarre quirks.

Microsoft was on a downward trajectory long before Satya Nadella's tenure.
e2le··on AI industry insiders launch site to poison the data that feeds them
Besides the potential issues with sending user requests to this site, it's only a single URL and could be easily ignored. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something. Wouldn't proxying and caching requests on behalf of your users make more sense?
e2le··on European troops arrive in Greenland to boost the Arctic island's security
> My belief is that the right wing in the US has almost absolute information dominance

I understand what your saying but I believe it's too much of an excuse. Every single person has a degree of personal responsibility to be at least somewhat informed on the state and happenings of your nation. A democracy simply cannot function otherwise.

e2le··on European troops arrive in Greenland to boost the Arctic island's security
It's truly vile how he treats the office and the democratic values he's meant to uphold and defend.

Why is he not impeached? Where is the American people?

He treats you with such contempt that he isn't above using the office for fraud and scams. He has done more to harm the US than Putin could have ever dreamed possible. Where is the American people? Hello?

e2le··on European troops arrive in Greenland to boost the Arctic island's security
If I were a Russian assert, how would I cripple the US and undermine/dismantle it's vast array of partnerships, relationships, and treaties. This is how I would do it.

Trump isn't playing 3D chess, he's just a moron laying waste to the democratic values, traditions, and institutions that have enabled the US to succeed.

There's little difference between Trump and a Russian assert. He does the work of the Kremlin for free.

e2le··on Denmark's struggle to break up with Silicon Valley
> generational responsibility

It's not generational responsibility. Everyone has at least some responsibility to defend the democratic values, traditions, and nation that have enabled them to live freely and peacefully.

For someone who has greatly benefited from the opportunities the nation afforded them, it's insulting for such a person to behave as if they possess no responsibility to defend the values, tradition, and nation that enabled them to succeed.

It's hard for me to escape how strongly I feel about this. As a European, I don't wish for such sorts of people to immigrate here. They can go back.

e2le··on Denmark's struggle to break up with Silicon Valley
It was the USA that gave you those opportunities to succeed and build wealth, raising you out of poverty. Without you would not in the position you are today, that itself deserves at least some responsibility to defend the nation against those who would tear down and destroy the democratic values, traditions, and institutions that enabled you and people like yourself to live freely and succeed.

Truthfully, as a European, I don't want people immigrating here who feel no responsibility to defend the democratic values, institutions, and nation that enabled them to live freely and succeed. Quite insane.

e2le··on Every country should set 16 as the minimum age for social media accounts
> What about Steam games? What about any games?

I wouldn't mind restricting access for children to certain types of games such as those with gambling (surprise) mechanics. It's a clear example of harmful media that is at least in some cases exclusively engineered and marketed towards children.

e2le··on Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams rugs his own memecoin just 30 minutes after launch
It goes without saying that scammers often target the most vulnerable. People desperate to escape their circumstances. In such a situation, not everyone is able to think clearly.

Doesn't stop state approved malware in all its forms.

e2le··on Gnome calculator pings the International Monetary Fund website
Not too long ago, Gnome calculator would freeze and crash when it tried to download currency conversion data. It would make such requests on each startup, eventually it was fixed in Ubuntu LTS but was broken for quite some time.
e2le··on Public Sans – A strong, neutral typeface
Is this a problem?
e2le··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
Of all the AI features added recently, local translations is one that I would be OK with being enabled by default. It's useful, and its value proposition is much less dubious.
e2le··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
Thunderbird is entirely funded by donations for some years now and is more than enough. In 2024, Thunderbird received $10.3M (19% increase over the previous year) in donations which was used to employ 43 people.

e2le··on X hit with $140M EU fine for breaching content rules
Pardon my ignorance, but I don't believe RIPE is a US organisation or branch of the US government.

Any attempts by the US government to assert control of a foreign non-profit entity such as RIPE is only going to end in tears. I suspect would also empower those pushing to balkanise the internet should the independence of RIPE or ARIN be violated.

I'm not sure region specific intranets is a future anyone should want.

e2le··on Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business
Allowing one sector of the economy to starve out investment in others is unlikely to be something without consequences.
e2le··on Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today
Out of curiosity, does ArchiveBox integrate some way of verifying the contents of the archived page(s) are legitimate and unmodified?
e2le··on Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today
At the very least it demonstrates that he has lied about his connection to Epstein and that Maxwell is also similarly lying.
e2le··on Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today
>They replied within a few hours. The response was straightforward: the illegal content would be removed (and we verified that it was), and they had never received any previous notifications about those URLs.

They never notified archive.today of the illegal material, instead they chose to demand blocking actions of archive.today from a DNS provider. I would be interested to know whether any other DNS service providers have received similar such demands.

I would assume (like any normal individual), that you would notify the service first (archive.today) and if they've proven to be a non-responder to CSAM material then escalate to legal action.

If archive.today is honest about never receiving a prior notification, then the way in which they've decided to go about removing the illegal material is very suspicious.
