dzogchen··on TL;DR of Deep Dive into LLMs Like ChatGPT by Andrej Karpathy
For a model to be ‘fully’ open source you need more than the model itself and a way to run it. You also need the data and the program that can be used to train it.

See The Open Source AI Definition from OSI: https://opensource.org/ai

dzogchen··on Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? How to thrive in a ChatGPT world
Did your photocopier also write a drama in the style of Shakespeare based on some news article you gave it?
dzogchen··on Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? How to thrive in a ChatGPT world
This will not age well.

Yesterday my bullshit machine wrote a linker argument parser to hook a C++ library up in a Rust build config. Oh it also wrote tests for it. https://chatgpt.com/share/67a89e5f-b5b4-8011-9782-472d469cc2...

dzogchen··on Zig; what I think after months of using it
C and C++ both have support for bit-fields.

dzogchen··on How to Run DeepSeek R1 671B Locally on a $2000 EPYC Server
That one can handle up to 200B parameters according to NVIDIA.
dzogchen··on We're bringing Pebble back
This is awesome. Pebble is still the best so many years later! I also have the Garmin, but Garmin thinks UX design is a waste of money or something, its horrendous. Pebble is the absolute undisputed King here.

Can’t wait to get my hands on a new Pebble!

dzogchen··on EFF statement on U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold TikTok ban
Extremely weak argument. Just because one platform is shut down does not mean the right to free speech is affected. A platform, mind you, under full control by the Chinese Communist Party, who do not allow ANY form of free speech to exist in the country they have under their thumb.
dzogchen··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
To be fair there is very little centralized control of EU member states. But the US will not be happy regardless.
dzogchen··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
With Trump already threatening Canada without this ridiculous plan, no thanks.

> The Monroe Doctrine is a United States foreign policy position that opposes European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere. It holds that any intervention in the political affairs of the Americas by foreign powers is a potentially hostile act against the United States. The doctrine was central to American grand strategy in the 20th century.

dzogchen··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
There's a paper I saw a while ago that uses patterns for some kind of roulette strategy, and the bankroll grew from 115k to 155k in a year, but also consistently.

Seems like there's clear patterns to how roulette tables operate. If only casinos would teach people these patterns and strategies in depth rather than just letting them play.

dzogchen··on Foursquare's 104M Points of Interest
No. Each POI has date properties indicating date added, date closed and last check date. Most POIs are surprisingly up to date.

See my other comment to explore the dataset.

dzogchen··on Foursquare's 104M Points of Interest
Someone already packaged them up in PMTiles format, if you want to explore the dataset (uses MapLibre): https://wipfli.github.io/foursquare-os-places-pmtiles/

dzogchen··on Retrofitting spatial safety to lines of C++
To “lines of C++” and to “hundreds of millions of lines of C++” is quite a different title.
dzogchen··on fly.io Network Outage
Back up again!
dzogchen··on Opinion: I'd rather have a headphone jack and a microSD slot than AI in my phone
Why would they give up on three sources of extra revenue?
dzogchen··on Optimizing Large-Scale OpenStreetMap Data with SQLite
> This highlights the importance of iterative refinement and the power of combining different technologies to solve problems.

This uninformative non-sentence sounds an awful lot like ChatGPT.

dzogchen··on Julian Assange Is Free
The people that compared Assange to Navalny look even more silly now.
dzogchen··on Developers are not neccessarily nerds
I applaud the people that spend time away from their computer instead of fucking around with vim in their free time as well as spend 40 hours a week working behind a compute.r

dzogchen··on 100k Stars
I thought a project on GitHub reached 100k stars… I need to touch more grass.
dzogchen··on Google Fit APIs get shut down in 2025, might break fitness devices
I would make a request to show fitness centres as a 'category'.
dzogchen··on An infinite canvas for code exploration
Did anyone figure out how to use this with another repo?
dzogchen··on Apple must open iPadOS to sideloading within 6 months, EU says
Sideloading is such a horrible term for “installing apps without Apple’s approval”. And Apple illegally even tries to STILL require their approval.
dzogchen··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
The main reason for the persistence of C despite its warts and general mess is just "first-mover advantage": it was the first, therefore it has more libraries/packages/development of the ecosystem than the alternatives.

Stop being lazy, go back to engineering first principles and it makes little sense to stay with C. [Insert systems programming language du jour] or any other well-developed language makes more sense.

dzogchen··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
The free software zealots are a tiny fraction of the open source community.
dzogchen··on Bun’s New Crash Reporter
I just cannot get excited for this VC funded experimental piece of technology. 10 years ago, maybe. Node.js is not going anywhere anytime soon.
dzogchen··on Gems of Tailwind CSS
I wanted to read this, but seeing that godawful AI generated filler picture made me reconsider.
dzogchen··on 3rd Edition of Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++ by Stroustrup
Your browser is sloppy.
dzogchen··on Why you should not apply to YC
If your YC startup fails you can possibly still pivot or try again. I don’t understand his thesis at all.
