dz0ny··on Firefox has surpassed Chrome on Speedometer
I don't know but inspect tools just irritate me soo much in Firefox that I don't like to use the browser then at all. I started my career in Firefox and still remember you had to have an extension for debugging HTML, the editing style was fun and useful.

My usage changed a lot from then, now I need:

- Tracing graph for network events in Firefox which it does not have.

- Applications tab that would show me the status of workers, cache ... is just plain in Firefox

- And UI seems condensed, I guess I just got used to a more relaxed Chrome.

- The whole debacle we don't want you to install a web app as a shortcut because it's bad for some reason. (They lost me initially with this years ago when I still had Linux).

It's a shame but Firefox is just not what I need and prefer anymore.

Also serving wrong certificates for a lot of content domains.

dz0ny··on Expired SSL Certificate at GitHub
Looks like they tried to rotate the cert, maybe due to the private key leak. But instead, they rolled the wrong expired key to all content domains.
dz0ny··on Extending Python with Rust
Yes, this. If you run something that's not in the binary cache you are an in a lot of pain because of Cargo. I have no idea how it works but it's painfully slow (is there some sort of network speed limit implemented? or is it downloading entire git history? )
dz0ny··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
Fine but get them fuck out away from steering wheel, I hate cars that put 30+ buttons for shit you never use there.
dz0ny··on Ask HN: Alternative to Heroku
Thanks, I can pass with not having teams specific roles in short term. The real issue, that prevented me normal use was the /tmp, and I fixed it.

It looks like when you at runtime configure "tmpfs", you actually look into what permissions /tmp has. On Heroku, the permission is apparently enforced and will always work. So on my end, I just had to chmod 0777 and that solved my server issue.

dz0ny··on Heroku resetting passwords for “a portion” of their users immediately
They are now also resetting integrations. I got notice that I need to re-add Slack integration.
dz0ny··on Ask HN: Alternative to Heroku
Thanks. I've looked at Digital Ocean apps, they are missing review apps and looks like they have similar issue as Railway.app where builder is doing some strange things. Nevertheless, pricing is good, and I can always push Docker image via container registry.

Fly.io will be next on review :), thanks for suggestion.

dz0ny··on Ask HN: Alternative to Heroku
Great to hear that. I need a bit more complex service and support for review apps.
dz0ny··on Ask HN: Alternative to Heroku
I would like to avoid the case where I have to manage the ops on my own.

dz0ny··on Level 3 Global Outage
Summary: On August 30, 2020 10:04 GMT, CenturyLink identified an issue to be affecting users across multiple markets. The IP Network Operations Center (NOC) was engaged, and initial research identified that an offending flowspec announcement prevented Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) from establishing across multiple elements throughout the CenturyLink Network. The IP NOC deployed a global configuration change to block the offending flowspec announcement, which allowed BGP to begin to correctly establish. As the change propagated through the network, the IP NOC observed all associated service affecting alarms clearing and services returning to a stable state.

dz0ny··on Nasa head of human spaceflight resigns days before 'historic' space mission
While Mr Loverro offered no further explanation, he told the Axios news website that his decision to leave the agency was unrelated to the upcoming launch. "I have 100% faith in the success of that mission," he said.

dz0ny··on VLC is blacklisting recent Huawei devices to combat negative app reviews
I am observing the same "killing" of background service for Signal app too. Basically any app with a long-running session which you don't whitelist. And it seems that it whitelist the Spotify for example on its own. I don't think the blocking install by VLC team is the right way, communicating the issue to a user is a much more reasonable way. Look at Garmin Connect app, which had the same issue but they implemented notification and how-to disable management.
dz0ny··on LIDL cancels SAP introduction after spending 500M Euro

I bet the problem was at scaling/updating system on individual locations because I heard about the similar problems in small remote groceries/shops.

dz0ny··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
The way GitHub is developed (remote) and culture, this is pretty much death of GitHub and if most developers leave it will become a mess quite quickly.

GitLab just got big boost.

dz0ny··on Whois public database is in breach of GDPR, according to European authorities
Whois can perfectly have only technical data.

- domain expiry

- domain registration date

- nameservers

Everything else is not needed and as such would comply with GDPR.

dz0ny··on The Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades
It still boggles my mind how three different GPS position formats can be used. And then not used correctly by search crews, which then missed location by 23nm.

dz0ny··on Ask HN: Did Facebook really do something wrong?
> Facebook advertising doesn't leak user information.

It exposes too much data to advertisers/app, which most users unknowingly agree to. Which is still Facebook's problem and should be regulated. I think the downfall of FB has just started and Google is quite lucky that their efforts with G+ fell, because if they succeed they would be in same position.

Cambridge Analytica use of data is immoral and legality should be decided in courts.

dz0ny··on More diagnostics data from desktop
I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that anything that identifies consumer or group of consumers falls under GDPR.

General Data Protection Regulation, it's not only about personal information, but what data is collected by companies, who has access to it and why/how is it processed.

dz0ny··on More diagnostics data from desktop
Opt-in by GDPR means that you have to specifically click on checkbox, button, url and say "I consent on collection of this data(list of things that will be collected) on behalf Canonical LTD."
dz0ny··on More diagnostics data from desktop
I hope they checked this with their lawyers, otherwise they will be sued out of existence when EU GDPR directive comes into effect(only applies to EU citizens).

Just check the "Consent" section at https://gdprchecklist.io/

Opt-out is not legal anymore... I'm not saying they are not allowed to collect, they can, just not by default. And because they are requesting "Location", they fall under GDPR even in lamest terms.

It's just standard Gnome with user installable theme and icons. Well that they preinstall. I would not call this OS but more like UI bundle.
dz0ny··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
Intel card is the one recommended. Even Dell uses it in Linux pre-installed version of XPS.

I don't know what these guys are doing but even in Windows, I would get IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL after deep sleep.
