dylanpyle··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (March 2020)
SEEKING FREELANCER | REMOTE (but some overlap with US-Eastern time required)

We're looking for freelancers interested in taking on short-term projects involving developing, modifying, and maintaining Shopify themes for our customers at CALA [https://ca.la]. The time commitment needed would vary based on each project, and we would discuss availability and timeline before kicking off each new project. You'll be working on highly visible websites for some of the world's most creative fashion and apparel designers, ranging from indie brands to major celebrities.

We're looking for folks to build an ongoing relationship with; this isn't a one-shot project, we want to be able to offer you a continuous stream of new projects as they become available. We'll provide branding and design guidance and ensure that projects are well-scoped and constrained, but we're looking for folks who can make design and creative decisions themselves based on these guidelines.

We're based in NYC, but this is a remote position. Hours here are completely flexible, though there may be times when we'd need some overlap with US-Eastern time for calls or meetings.

Prior experience designing, building, and maintaining Shopify themes (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid) is required. Please send examples of past work to dylan+shopify@ca.la

dylanpyle··on Sinkholed
A couple of years ago we lost our domain [1] due to a registrar (that we were not a customer of) erroneously issuing a suspension. The amount of honor system involved in the whole process, particularly in ccTLDs without as much oversight, was really surprising.

dylanpyle··on Ask HN: Can I offer different prices to different users for the same product?
Yep, plenty of companies take a bunch of inputs (your budget, expected usage, potential revenue, how hard you negotiate..) and come up with a number based on that.

dylanpyle··on Cancer Complications: Confusing Bills, Maddening Errors And Endless Phone Calls
There's a huge spectrum of what's covered under US insurance plans. Mine, for example, is a "good" plan for the size of company we are, but if I was rushed to a hospital that wasn't in-network in an emergency, or a hospital visit was later deemed "unnecessary" by the insurance company, I could be subject to huge bills.
dylanpyle··on Ask HN: Do you use a GPG key with GitHub?
If you're using GitHub, it does this fairly nicely — you just upload your public key and it provides a green "verified" badge next to commits indicating that they were signed by a key attached to your profile.
dylanpyle··on The Story of Squeak, a Practical Smalltalk Written in Itself (1997)
Squeak was, I think, the first programming environment I ever used. I spent so many hours making race tracks (2d self driving cars!) and other fun toys, moved on to other stuff soon after that but never really found that feeling of instant feedback again.

dylanpyle··on Krisp.ai – Mute background noise during your calls
First app in a long time that I've downloaded within 5 seconds of hearing the pitch. Seriously looks too good to be true.
dylanpyle··on Leak Mitigation Checklist
Seems like the first point ("Once you have pushed a commit to GitHub, you should consider any data it contains to be compromised.") supersedes that — even if you and GitHub both erase any trace of it, there's a nonzero chance that some kind of automated system, malicious or not, has a copy of it already.
dylanpyle··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
It's pricey, but superhuman.com is very good.

dylanpyle··on How a domain registrar can kill your business
I had a related issue where a previous registrar — who we had moved away from months before — managed to accidentally "claw back" and disable our domain due to a misconfigured billing script. The fragility of the whole ecosystem is pretty scary.

Today it takes apparel companies 10+ months to develop and produce a garment. CALA reduces that down to a few weeks, from design to garment in your hands.

We’ve built the “Adobe Suite” for apparel designers, but with a proprietary Zara-like global supply chain built in. We enable any company of any size to design, develop, and produce garments faster than has ever been possible.
