I think that for your average "offline" business, just throwing Google Analytics at it is major overkill. It may even cause the website owner to simply not look at their stats just because they don't know what to look for exactly.

Have bootstrapped two separate SAAS businesses to $40K MRR and even though it gained me financial independence, I would probably not do it again.

Whoa, I did not expect to see Fathom show up on Hacker News. It's very early but our plan is indeed to go down a similar road as Matomo, albeit more opinionated. Hopefully resulting in a simpler product in the long run.
I feel it's important to point out out that with Fathom, no personal information is tracked (or stored), at all. Only daily and hourly aggregates are stored on the server.
And yes, the demo should not require you to enter credentials. The simple reason is that I haven't gotten to polishing that experience just yet. Sorry.
We'll be setting up a public roadmap over the next few weeks so your feedback while we built this would be very much appreciated!
It's a self-hosted OS alternative to Google Analytics, much like Matomo (formerly Piwik) but less focused on developers and way more opinionated in terms of what data is visualized.
It's called Fathom Analytics[1]. Eventually we want to provide a paid hosted option much like what Ghost is offering to make sure we can keep on supporting it. For now, our development efforts are paid out of our own pockets.
My specific Go toolset consists of the following packages:
* urfave/cli
* gorilla/mux
* html/template
* keyselhightower/envconfig
* database/sql
* rubenv/migrate
No paid advertising. I tried but it never really got to a point where it was worth it.
Sorry for being a little vague, I'd rather not state my revenue and product together. And sine I've already mentioned my revenue, I won't mention the product. ;)
Only expense is my time spent and a $5 Linode VPS that hosts my shop & update server.
Understand buying vs renting before doing either.
Keep monthly (recurring) expenses low.
If you absolutely need a car, keep your ego in check and look at mileage & reliability.
Think long term.
- uMatrix (host-based filtering): https://github.com/gorhill/umatrix/
- HTTPS Everywhere: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
- Self Destructing Cookies (fine grained cookie control): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/self-destruct..., the latest Chrome & FF have better settings for this built-in though.
He got turned down for a lot of jobs (in shitty ways) despite having published some reasonably successful open-source libraries? How is open source to blame for him not getting a job exactly?
Not having a browser add-on to retrieve passwords was feeling like a step back in terms of convenience though. That's why I built & open sourced browserpass [1], a browser extension for Pass.
It uses Native Host Messaging to securely retrieve passwords, so no crazy port listening as some other open-sourced add-ons do (which is a terribly bad idea).
What's crazy to me is that their crowdfunding campaign [1] has only raised $100K so far, considering what they're doing.

Firefox has been super responsive to me, using less memory than the same browsing activity would on Chrome & Firefox-only (afaik) add-ons like Self Destructing Cookies are A+. On Android, Firefox Mobile works just as good or better than Chrome.
From a developer standpoint, Mozilla's recent work on the Web Extensions API (which is an almost complete match with Chrome's) is outstanding.
That said, if your plugin does anything visual, be ready for a lot of beginner questions. Some of your non-paying users will be the hardest to please, especially in WordPress land where you as a (real) developer will be severely underappreciated.
Meh, as if OP is to blame for how unsupportive his friends and family are.
In my opinion, you _should_ tell them. You should also tell them how you hate it that they're being so unsupportive. If they don't change, I'll echo what others said and re-evaluate your relationship with them....
Signed and upvoted though!
2. No. I always decide on the day itself.
3. I seriously enjoy Jamie Oliver recipes (they tend to be simple, as in: throw all kinds of nice spices together) and Indian food.
4. Paleo-ish. No sugar, limited amount of carbs.
5. Watch Jamie Olivers cooking show. Plan ahead in order to save money and make your life easier.
Cooking is a wonderful skill that you develop throughout your life. I started at age 18 and am now known for my delicious cooking by my friends and family while I am only aged 24.
