Programmer and entrepeneur that would love to be able to hold a normal job, but I just didn't have it in me.

Have bootstrapped two separate SAAS businesses to $40K MRR and even though it gained me financial independence, I would probably not do it again.

> Cattle are fed the byproducts of soy production like soy meal that humans refuse to eat. By dollar value, almost all of the soy produced goes to human consumption.

This is provably false, see [1]. The page is in Dutch, but surely there are English sources just a quick Google search away too.

dvko··on My oldest kid made this to raise awareness for composting
Same thing in The Netherlands. Organic matter (brown or green bin) is free, but the bin that ends up on a landfill costs a few € to empty. I like it.

Also we have separate collections for glass, paper, plastic etc. So if you put in some effort, you can go a full year without having to empty your black (landfill) bin.

dvko··on Alienware Doesn’t Want You to Buy an AMD Ryzen PC
I have a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 with a Ryzen 4800U and love it. Running Linux on it, everything pretty much worked right out of the box.
dvko··on PHP in 2021
I once came back to a Laravel project after just one year of working on other projects and had to go through several upgrade guides just to stay up to date. Most changes were quite trivial (yet annoying to make), like namespace changes and other things that should probably have been weeded out before ever making it into a release... It’s why I prefer Symfony if I absolutely had to work with PHP nowadays.
dvko··on First C compiler ported to GCC
It’s also in the K&R book IIRC, stating that the two are equivalent.
dvko··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Not as much as the other two by a long shot, but a tiny bit, yes. I've hidden the purchase flow on the website a while ago so I can retire the paid version sometime soon.

I've been selling a couple of WordPress plugins since 2013, mostly piggy-backing on other popular services that were experiencing crazy growth and taking care of their WordPress integration for them (unofficially, some already had one that sucked).

Yearly (subscription) revenue is at about $500K USD now. It has been growing by less than 10% for the last few years as I haven't been that interested in growing it - I want to work less, not more.

So far I haven't seen any negative effects because of COVID-19 in terms of revenue. If anything there seems to be a slight uptick in new subscriptions and slightly fewer support emails per week.

dvko··on Please wear a mask.
Ehhh no. There is a huge mask shortage, leave the masks for the people that actually need them (hospital staff).

Just stay “the fuck” home .

dvko··on Ask HN: Schedule of a solo founder?
Solo since 2010, 35K EUR MRR.

Mornings are for focused work on things I look forward to doing, so that usually means development work and really moving the needle. If I force myself to start my day answering support emails or writing a blog post, I usually procrastinate and end up with less done in total for that day.

Directly after lunch is when I answer support emails, so that I still have plenty of time for it and not end the day totally stressed out with a non-empty inbox. Depending on how I feel after that, I finish my day doing low-effort obligational work or I go back to fun work again.

I like the goal and the product seems good apart from some subjective styling nitpicks, but your blog is terrible. Why can’t I click on any of the titles or/and a “read more” link?

After figuring out how to get to a single post, I noticed your blog uses the product, perhaps that could serve as a nice low-effort demo? Firing up an editor and trying out the code snippet is too much work for something you haven’t even seen yet, imho.

dvko··on Stop donating your customers' data to Google Analytics
It's why I'm somewhat against WASM, even though it's very cool from a technical standpoint. It makes the web even more of an operating system, where I'd like it to be less.
dvko··on Stop donating your customers' data to Google Analytics
If you're using WordPress, there is https://wordpress.org/plugins/koko-analytics/. Open-source, self hosted, no external services & very performant.
dvko··on Stop donating your customers' data to Google Analytics
The open-source (self-hosted) version of Fathom is dead. The only commits they have been pushing to it in the last 12 months have been upsells for their closed-source & centralized paid offering.
dvko··on Ask HN: Why there isn't CSS on the cloud?
What do you mean? CDN’s can deliver CSS too.
dvko··on GoatCounter – Simple web statistics, with no tracking of personal data
GoAccess is great nowadays.
dvko··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Seconded. His book and blog (which is called something like “use the index, Luke”) are really good too.
dvko··on Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020?
Your suggestions seem a little over the place. I suggest focusing on a single language instead.

Personally I would advise you to learn Rust and learn it well. Forget wasting your time on ”hottest tech”, Rust is here to stay and will be used for decades to come. The official Rust (git)book is a great resource to get started.

If you want to build for the web, learn React or Vue as well (but probably not both).

dvko··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
My to-read shelve on Goodreads has 620 books on it, but top of my list are:

- Feed by M.T. Anderson

- The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff

- Equality by Edward Bellamy

dvko··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
I am currently reading it as well. Only a few chapters in but already gained some interesting insights from it.
dvko··on Having Kids
Which is exactly why change is needed, not for us all to stop having any kids at all.
dvko··on Having Kids
With that attitude, yes. This actually illustrates my point of changing consumption habits perfectly.

We became vegetarians the moment we became parents. Not because I think our individual change will make a difference but because I want it to be a no-brainer for our kids to drastically reduce meat intake.

If you don’t want to raise kids, that is fine. But don’t act like having 1 or 2 kids is ruining the planet. It is not, it’s the way we live that is.

dvko··on Having Kids
That is probably mostly because the population argument is usually used by people in rich countries in order not to have to change anything, despite the fact that on average, a 10-person family in rural Africa emits less CO2 than a single individual in the US.

I agree there is probably no good reason for anyone to have more than 4 kids (at most, probably just 2 to go for a manageable population decline) but lifestyle is simply a more important aspect of the equation.

dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
Not really. What problem would it solve?
dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
The plugin issues a tracking request using a tiny client-side JS script, so most of those bots will already be omitted (as lots will most likely not be executing JavaScript or have `navigator.doNotTrack` enabled).

That said, I believe some of the smarter ones may still be tracked right now so I will add some user agent filtering to the script to make sure they aren't!

dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
I’ve been doing it for the last 10 years and have built other analytics tools before (Ana in 2016, then Fathom in 2018) as well, so it was super easy to build for me.

But if you’re new to WordPress, I think the process won’t be that enjoyable. Users are usually on EOL PHP versions and WordPress itself is very different from modern day PHP projects.

dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
Hah, I somewhat understand the former and fully agree with the latter. For what it’s worth, I hoped building it for WordPress would allow me to reach the most people who would otherwise be left-out by other self-hosted tools (by a lack of server skills or interest). Anyway, thanks for the kind words!
dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
We do - I’ll see if we can add in a warning message if changing that setting while a lot of data has already been tracked. Or perhaps mark it in the graph, so the difference comes with an explanation. What would you do?
dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
Thanks! Current though? The plugin supports PHP versions all the way back to 5.3 (which has been EOL for nearly 5 years).

Although I certainly recommend running a current PHP version of course.

dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
That’s how I feel too. Thank you so much for your contribution, I’ll make sure to get it reviewed soon so the language pack can be shipped.
dvko··on Show HN: Self-hosted, privacy-friendly and open-source analytics for WordPress
Not an option as the plugin does not store anything visitor specific, not even for a second. Would make it considerably harder to scale as well.
