dveeden2··on Reproducible and minimal source-only tarballs
> The generated files libntlm-1.8.tar.gz and libntlm-1.8.tar.gz.sig are published

Shouldn't we make browsers and (lib)curl understand this and automatically verify signatures? Maybe with some PKI or TOFU?

dveeden2··on Show HN: PostgreSQL index advisor
This is somewhat similar to TiAdvisor for TiDB, which also uses a hypothetical method.

dveeden2··on DBeaver – open-source database client
The viewer for geospatial data is much better than most other GUI clients (and CLI clients are often not very useful for geospatial data).
dveeden2··on Duplicity: Encrypted bandwidth-efficient backup
https://apps.gnome.org/DejaDup/ is using this as backend. It also has a experimental option to use https://github.com/restic/restic instead of duplicity.

dveeden2··on Arch Linux bugtracker migration to Gitlab completed
Looks like the planform they used before GitLab was Flyspray.

I assume this brings better integration between SCM and bugtracker.

dveeden2··on A peculiarity of the GNU Coreutils version of 'test' and '['
Installing GNU coreutils etc was also common on Solaris. However as it usually wasn't in your path before SysV utils it was only used with its full path.
dveeden2··on A very subtle bug (2010)
Maybe better to use something like https://docs.python.org/3/library/tarfile.html instead of calling some "outside" utilities?

This might be safer (command injection) and maybe more reliable.

However I don't know what I would have chosen and hindsight is always 20/20 and there might be other external commands and requirements...

dveeden2··on QWERTY Effect
The linked article is rather short, however the references on that page are interesting.

This is an interesting topic. My name (Daniël) is often written as Daniel, just because people don't know how to type an "ë" on their computer or smartphone.

I've setup a compose key on my keyboard, so I can press <compose> <"> <e>. I guess this is a leftover from when I used Sun systems, where the keyboard had a physical compose key.

dveeden2··on Ask HN: Do we still need SWAP partition?
With a 16GiB RAM laptop I often use more memory than that which then ends up on swap (on zram)

With NUMA swap etc. also becomes a bit more complicated (see also https://blog.jcole.us/2010/09/28/mysql-swap-insanity-and-the... )

I think the main question here is to use a swap partition or a swap file.

The main problem of swap partitions is how inflexible they are, but lvm/btrfs/zfs make that less of an issue.

On Solaris a crashdump was written to swap when the system panicked. Not sure what Linux/BSD crashdump systems use nowadays.

dveeden2··on It’s not wrong that "🤦🏼‍♂️".length == 7 (2019)
MySQL has two different length functions...

  mysql> WITH chars AS (SELECT ' ' c)
      -> SELECT LENGTH(c), CHAR_LENGTH(c) FROM chars;
  +-----------+----------------+
  | LENGTH(c) | CHAR_LENGTH(c) |
  +-----------+----------------+
  | 17 | 5 |
  +-----------+----------------+
1 row in set (0.01 sec)
Note that the doesn't seem to render in preformatted text on HN.

This should be easier to reproduce:

  mysql> WITH chars AS (SELECT 0xF09FA4A6F09F8FBCE2808DE29982EFB88F c)
      -> SELECT CONVERT(c USING utf8mb4), LENGTH(c), CHAR_LENGTH(c) FROM chars;
  +--------------------------+-----------+----------------+
  | CONVERT(c USING utf8mb4) | LENGTH(c) | CHAR_LENGTH(c) |
  +--------------------------+-----------+----------------+
  | | 17 | 17 |
  +--------------------------+-----------+----------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

dveeden2··on Forthcoming OpenSSL Releases 3.0.8, 1.1.1T and 1.0.2zg
So the 1.0.2zg release is only for those paying $50,000 for the enterprise contract? That's understandable, but guess the people paying for lower tiers won't be very happy with that.

To be fair, this is clearly stated on their page.

dveeden2··on Server BMCs can need to be rebooted every so often
With current browsers Java applets are not supported anymore. Some older HPE systems the didn't update the firmware to provide alternatives.

I've seen multiple vendors with problematic code that didn't work with newer Java versions.

This is by no means meant to bash Java. Some non-Java BMCs can be horrible as well (e.g. require many TCP ports in a firewall/tunnel unfriendly way or require SSH with old algorithms that are no longer enabled by default, or telnet..)

dveeden2··on Server BMCs can need to be rebooted every so often
There are too many names for the BMCs, even within a single vendor. BMC, ILO, LOM, DRAC, iDRAC, etc

And the worst are those that use java applets or webstart and require a ancient java version.

dveeden2··on Server BMCs can need to be rebooted every so often
Yes I remember something similar on Sun Fire 6800.

Another issue was a firmware bug on the Sun Netra X1 where rebooting or updating the lom would result in a reset of the host. Not fun with UFS without logging enabled.

dveeden2··on Faster MySQL with HTTP/3
Would be nice to see a comparison with MySQL's X Protocol (protobuf based) as well as the "Classic" protocol. I don't think I've seen any MySQL compatible databases implement this protocol yet, so that's probably why it wasn't included.
