dutchbookmaker··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
I think you have to just treat this like any other addiction.

I feel like I compulsively play chess online. I had not slipped up from 1/1 until last night. Then I really fell off the wagon tonight and played about 10 games.

It sounds ridiculous but I just have to put that behind me and get back to not playing online chess. I can play in person for fun but not the mindless waste of time chess has become for me online.

For me at least, it is always much harder to moderate than to go cold turkey with basically anything.

dutchbookmaker··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
55% means basically nothing in this context if even money. Long 45% to 55% is most likely completely random because it is symmetric with shorting 45% to 55%

Exactly what you would expect from a language model making random stock picks.

dutchbookmaker··on People are bad at reporting what they eat. That's a problem for dietary research
Nuts are so deceptive.

I love almonds and because I love them so much, if I don't portion them out then I end up eating 2-3X the calories that I thought I did so easily.

I pretty much eat 1k calories per day during the week and then 2-3k on the weekend.

It took constant lowering of calories over a year to get to this point but being hungry just feels normal and natural for me. There must be something with fat adaption going on as I never feel low on energy. Eating during the week has been completely divorced from a pleasurable activity to me too. Chicken breast, nuts, vegetables, not much else during the week. It is just easy at this point for me to wait to eat for pleasure on the weekend.

dutchbookmaker··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
I can only go off what I read in American Kingpin but from that book, to pardon Ulbricht is absolutely insane.

Not to mention lets compare what Ulbricht did to say Snowden?

Are you kidding me?

It is like we live in some idiot version of the Twilight Zone.

dutchbookmaker··on Show HN: Amurex – An open source AI meeting copilot
Personally, I don't think it really works either as a brand. A meeting is not that complicated that you need a "copilot". A stenographer is not a "copilot". This only worked with the hubris and obnoxiousness of tech people who think they are doing more than they are.

Normal people in the workforce know their boring job that this is trying to help automate isn't that complicated or exciting. The analogy with aviation couldn't make less sense for most jobs when trying to automate the boring aspects.

dutchbookmaker··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
I was in the same boat with genetics and cholesterol. It is all the diet. At some point I realized I had to stop eating cheese completely. No pizza, no nachos, no tacos with cheese. I can stay in good shape with a once a week cheat night but I don't have the genetics to deal with the cholesterol like that.

It sucked at first but the things I do enjoy now, I enjoy them just as much.

dutchbookmaker··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
Every even mid sized US city use to have a Village Voice knock off free paper but even the Village Voice went under almost 8 years ago.

I use to love these artsy free papers but even my elderly parents don't read the local newspaper anymore that grew up reading the paper.

The local paper is a very small niche item at this point.

The only way I can think to do this is to hang old school flyers in an area of the city/town that attracts the people you want in your community.

dutchbookmaker··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
I thought this meant it was $500 billion in government money.

Some of these companies do have huge cash reserves they don't know what to do with so if it is $500 billion of private money, I am not going to complain.

I will believe it when I see it though and that this isn't a 100 billion in private money with a 400 billion dollar free US government put option for the "private" investors if things don't go perfect.

dutchbookmaker··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
I wouldn't be surprised if the freedom of speech nonsense is an influence campaign by the PLA.

It is just such a ridiculous argument but if you repeat nonsense enough times, people start repeating it back as if it is real.

We never had to deal with this before because the WW2 generation was obviously not stupid enough to let the KGB publish children's books and Saturday morning cartoons inside the US and have a KGB influence campaign that says to ban the books/cartoons would be a free speech issue.

Obviously a non-starter. What you see with Tiktok is how completely infiltrated and corrupted things are in the US in 2025.

The unrestricted war from China started a long time ago and the IMO the US has already lost.

dutchbookmaker··on O1 isn't a chat model (and that's the point)
I would say it really depends on the goal of art school.

There is a creative purist idea that the best thing that can happen to an art student is to be thrown out of school early on before it ruins your creativity.

If you put that aside, a stable diffusion art school class just sounds really cool to me as an elective class. Especially the group that would be in this class. The problem I find with these tools is they are overwhelmed by the average person, non-artist, making pictures of cats and darth vader so it is so hard to find what real artists are doing in the space.

dutchbookmaker··on O1 isn't a chat model (and that's the point)
iatrogenic harm though is like 25-30% with the current system.

It is really something that these models should help out a great deal with but people want to believe their doctor has some kind of medical omniscience.

dutchbookmaker··on O1 isn't a chat model (and that's the point)
Great stuff, thanks for this.
dutchbookmaker··on O1 isn't a chat model (and that's the point)
Good stuff.

I am going to try to start measuring my prompts.

Thinking about it, I am not sure what the entropy is for the above vs "start measuring prompts".

dutchbookmaker··on TikTok goes dark in the US
It is much more than this.

The PLA took huge lessons from the first Gulf War that the way to fight the US was to fight everywhere but the traditional battlefield.

Their means and methods have been absolutely brilliant.

The most brilliant thing to me is to fight on a time frame that is so long, that even the idea the PLA is at war with the US sounds ridiculous to most Americans.

If this is true, Douyin will never divest of Tiktok in the US. They would rather it just shutdown in the US. They won't let the US dissect an information weapon from the inside. The company valuation can't include the information weapon value so the offer price is always going to be a joke from the Douyin side.
