durbin··on Scribd quietly growing like crazy (and profitable)
I think tikhon is starting to make hacker news and YC Companies look bad. The poster of this link is the founder of scribd and a YC alum. If you look at his last submission on Parse you'll see this isn't the first time. We don't come to HN to be spammed with subtle marketing for YC Companies. We will start to go somewhere else.
durbin··on Show HN: I converted my Backbone/Rails app Cloudedit to Parse in 5 minutes
The title of the HN link is purposely misleading.
durbin··on Show HN: I converted my Backbone/Rails app Cloudedit to Parse in 5 minutes
a disclosure that you're one of the founders of Parse would be appropriate.
durbin··on Show HN: 7courses - The easy to use online recipe manager.
Everybody is saying $10 is too high of a price point and that was my initial reaction too. However, I think its great that you're looking to build a product and charge people for it. Its easy to coast by thinking that you're doing something right when you have lots of free users. By charging out of the gate, you'll be able to learn how to get money from people a lot more quickly than a company going the freemium route, keep trying.
durbin··on Using Redis SORT and GET to save on roundtrips
good point.
durbin··on App.net: now w/launch pages & customer support integration
well played app.net, http://soon.ep.io/flearn/
durbin··on Six programming languages built in Cambridge, MA
The title and focus of this post is a good example of the problem I think Boston has: they want to do research and create some languages - they don't like going into the trenches and doing the lower level stuff that builds companies. that's an extreme generalization but I think it applies at least a little.
durbin··on Entrepreneurs Are Artists
I haven't read the article and I'm not a Steve Blank fan but I upvoted because I love and agree with the headline.
durbin··on Detroit's population crashes down 25% from 2000
Getting talent to the region isn't really that much of an issue, its keeping it. There are tons of Univeristy of Michigan grads in the bay area that have started amazingly successful companies, most notably Larry Page. There will always be a strong flow of talent from U of M, its just a matter of convincing some of them to stay in the area.
durbin··on Detroit's population crashes down 25% from 2000
it is disappointing news, maybe if people quit calling it the rust belt that we be a nice place to start.
durbin··on 47% of the world’s wealthy people are entrepreneurs
This headline is why I went to Babson in a nutshell.
durbin··on Pizza And Ramen Are Hurting Your Startup
your server going down is hurting your startup
durbin··on VirtualBox 4.0 released (link to changelog)
for the hater that downvoted me: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/818
durbin··on VirtualBox 4.0 released (link to changelog)
It still does not have symbolic link support for shared folders with a snow leopard host. FAIL. I have to use vmware fusion instead.
durbin··on The Beatles: The Original Lean Startup
I think "lean startup" has moved into a close second behind "social media expert" as my most hated phrase.
durbin··on Obama Proclaims November 19th as National Entrepreneurs’ Day
Babson What!
durbin··on Windows Phone 7 developers – Obfuscate your app or have your source code stolen
isn't open code one of the reasons the web became the greatest achievement in history?
durbin··on The Scene Will Kill You
love it. moved up to mountain view about 6 months ago and met the people that go to every tech event in SF and the valley, everyday. They say they are entrepreneurs but I still don't know what they're doing.
durbin··on Ask HN: Any good math jokes?
I've always wanted a t shirt that said "I love LAMP" with a picture of a computer on it.
durbin··on What is the best way for a non-CS major to obtain credibility as a programmer?
make something.

preferably something you can send people a url for or something you open source on github.

durbin··on Ask HN: What are your preferred DNS management services?
It looks like Total DNS is supplied with godaddy domains. Are there any performance issues with using one DNS management service over another or rolling your own?
durbin··on Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest coming to iPad by HTML and javascript
awesome.
durbin··on The Gentle Art of Poverty
Written October 1977
durbin··on Where to See Silicon Valley
whats your prob?
durbin··on Challenge: Make a game, sell 1 copy by Oct 31st
I have a challenge. How about setting your sights a little higher and doing something that might benefit society. That can be a game but if everyone designs their own version of 'Angry Birds' then this challenge is idiotic.
durbin··on Ask HN: Would you work at a startup that requires you to use Linux?
VirtualBox, VirtualBox, VirtualBox.
durbin··on The first step is to start
I love the drawing on the right side of the brain reference, one of my favorite books. http://www.drawright.com/
durbin··on Ask HN: What happens when your startup fails?
Seppuku
durbin··on Paul Graham on trends for the future
I wasn't hating on Wave, I am a huge fan of XMPP and the technologies. Its the media that blows everything out of proportion and I guess google can be blamed for some of that with big release presentations.
durbin··on Paul Graham on trends for the future
ouch, don't joke about Paul Graham on hacker news.
