dumbo-octopus··on Christopher Columbus may have been Spanish and Jewish, documentary says
Oh and accepting Him as your Lord, not savior. Lord is the predicate, Savior is the consequence.

> depending on who you ask

> Generally not an arduous process.

Why not ask Jesus? He said it requires giving everything you have to the kingdom, following the spirit of the Law more fully than the Jews themselves do, and loving the Lord and your neighbor with all your heart. He additionally said that many who claim to be Christian are not, and will be judged accordingly.

This argument is very detached from reality. The Jewish tribe is defined as being descended from Israel, with folks independently joining as a rather rare corner case. On the other hand, Christians are defined to be those people who have heard the gospel and chosen to accept Jesus as their Lord.

It’s as if you said my family didn’t share DNA with me because an adoption or two had occurred over the centuries. It’s a bizarre argument that keeps coming up here, I don’t know what the real underlying root of it is.

The idea being that since you believe it is “barely distinguishable”, it actually does not exist? Odd argument.
dumbo-octopus··on Zero-latency SQLite storage in every Durable Object
Indeed. The entire purpose of DO’s is essentially to provide the consistency guarantees that KV cannot.

What would you call that genetic information which was passed down from Israel to his twelve children’s tribes?
dumbo-octopus··on Christopher Columbus may have been Spanish and Jewish, documentary says
Are you specifically claiming that a common ancestor does not exist, or that genetic information does not spread to offspring?

Scientists have no right to declare what does and does not exist based on what their machines are able to detect. Did gravity not exist before the LHC was constructed and the Higgs data analyzed?

Jewish DNA is that which has descended from Abraham, through Isaac, to Jacob and the Jewish nation. Gravity is an attraction between masses. These things exist – regardless of your machines’ proclivities.

dumbo-octopus··on Notes on Zero-latency SQLite storage in every Durable Object
In practice you’re most likely to be collaborating with other folks on your school project group, work team, close family, etc. Sure there are exceptions, but generally speaking picking a service location near your first group member ensures low latency for them (and they’re probably most engaged), and is likely to have lowish latency for everyone else.

On the flip side, picking US-East-1 gives okayish latency to folks near that, and nobody else.

dumbo-octopus··on Why does FM sound better than AM?
Better is in the ears of the beholder. Personally I prefer AM because I can hear multiple stations at once, and hear sources of wideband EM interference in my environment.
dumbo-octopus··on [dead]
Yes, but for good reason. This is an almost religious topic at this point, everyone’s opinions have been locked in for years and all debate ends in fire.
dumbo-octopus··on Christopher Columbus may have been Spanish and Jewish, documentary says
All of Jesus’s original disciples were Jewish.

And you can be certainly be Jewish without having Jewish DNA, but there’s some controversy as to whether the reverse is true.

dumbo-octopus··on ABC News hacks into popular robot vacuum, watches owner through camera
Also a happy Q Revo Pro customer. No mic/camera, but with the lidar the auto location and pathing is shockingly efficient. And vacuuming might be easy, but mopping is a pain that I never have to deal with anymore. The difference between a pure vacuum and a vacuum plus mop on hardwood floors is night and day, especially with two pets.

dumbo-octopus··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture (2022)
Sure, I’ve even made a handful of those myself. I contrast them with workspace extensions that run on a (possibly remote) host with full access to subprocesses/etc.

Their business model is fine, and telemetry has nothing to do with it. The telemetry aspect of the article is a red herring the author introduced seemingly to elicit more popular support on their website and others like it. The core issue has nothing to to with telemetry and everything to do with licensing and intellectual property.

(assuming you haven’t somehow looked at a block of legal text, disregarded the opening paragraph, and assumed the rest of it somehow is to be interpreted in isolation?)

And happily VS Code runs in the browser (vscode.dev, github.dev) if you do choose to make that security/performance trade off at some point for some reason. And with sync you can have all your UI extensions and keybindings ported over under the covers.

Software engineers have to be the most melodramatic lot in existence. Microsoft: you can use this product for your development work freely, but we have licensing in place that prevents redistribution that cuts out our core product offering because let’s be real here this is really expensive to develop and both us and our employees have bills to pay just like anyone else.

Internet personalities: the closest thing I might compare this to is the deliberate proliferation of smallpox and the resulting deaths of hundreds of thousands of native americans. (a story which, ironically, turns out to be almost entirely fabricated to spread FUD about the us government… https://allthatsinteresting.com/smallpox-blankets)

You also have vscode. What you don’t have is the various proprietary extensions msft makes to vscode, just as you don’t have every proprietary extension anyone has ever made to those listed platforms.

Without proposing a model for how the 50+ full time employees who create VS Code justify their collective ~20MM annual budget, this sounds a lot like: “Ugh, they made it mildly inconvenient for my company to benefit from all their engineering work but swap out the product surface and reap the profits by undercutting their product via not needing to fund the engineering ourselves. How lame.”
dumbo-octopus··on Show HN: Mitata – Benchmarking tooling for JavaScript
When you say streaming JSON parser, do you mean that it outputs a live “observable” object as it is steaming, or that it just doesn’t keep the entire source data in memory? I’ve done some work for the former for displaying rich LLM outputs as they are delivered - it’s a surprisingly underexplored area from what I’ve seen.

Cash in the literal sense, sure. But not the practical sense, where it is more a euphemism for “no middleman”.
dumbo-octopus··on DOJ accuses Visa of monopoly that affects price of 'nearly everything’
(which is a money saving trick in an of itself: if buying X thing requires you to get up and move your body to the store and look at it and pick it up and check out and haul it back, you’re going to buy a lot less things than if all you have to do is move your index finger 0.25mm once. This is why Amazon made with one click purchasing, to the extent people paid amzn for a license to implant “buying it now”)
dumbo-octopus··on DOJ accuses Visa of monopoly that affects price of 'nearly everything’
The easy solution is to not buy things on the internet. I can’t think of the last thing I bought online.
