dtx1··on Mozilla wants you to love Firefox again
That would almost be a good argument but the reality is that they cannibalized their core product to increase their revenue but have done so to the point where it no longer remains viable in the market. Alas, the locusts have had their feast and we are all worse of for it.
dtx1··on Mozilla wants you to love Firefox again
> So what target user is left for a Firefox?

Google, so they can pretend they don't have a monopoly so the antitrust lawsuits are kept at bay. And Mozillas CEO[0] so they can extract millions while fucking us all.

dtx1··on Mozilla wants you to love Firefox again
There's nothing left. That Ladybird Browser[0] is the biggest name in the game outside of Firefox and Chromium but it's pre-alpha and if they don't switch to a memory safe language there's no point to it.

That leaves you with Firefox and chromium derivatives, either LibreWolf if you want something Firefox based or Brave if you chose to get assimilated. Both have their issues: LibreWolf, like Firefox, lacks about a decade in security enhancements chromium implemented and Brave with their cryptoshit and questionable calling home behaviour hasn't been particularly trustworthy.

Welcome to the brave new world.

dtx1··on Cats appear to grieve death of fellow pets – even dogs, study finds
> Are there any social mammals that DON'T grieve?

I remember a video of a hunter shooting a deer and the other deer around it didn't care and kept eating their grass. I suspect most cats are smarter than deers.

It's Proton branded.
dtx1··on Proton announces release of a new VPN protocol, "Stealth"
Providers like petfect privacy have offered stuff like this for over a decade and they, like others, don't advertise their blatant misunderstandings[0] of the threat models people in censored countries face. I don't see why this is being shilled here so much, it's as close to an obvious honeypot as you'll ever see.

Does anyone know what chipset that gogole tv streamer is using? A GrapheneOS streamig device would be so cool!
dtx1··on Translating All C to Rust (TRACTOR)
> JavaScript is one obvious candidate

I don't see anyone defending JavaScript. In fact a whole lot of people are using typescript now because JavaScript is just so bad.

As for python, that's a good point. I guess it's just because it's easy to use and all the numerical stuff is done with c-bindings anyway?

But the C++ Situation is genuinely different. There's a reason governments are now calling upon developers to just let it die already[0]. That design flaw is so bad it's causing genuine harm.

dtx1··on Translating All C to Rust (TRACTOR)
It's quite hilarious to see the push back rust gets by the c/c++ community. Obviously their decades of hard work and experience to work with those languages are overriding their reasoning circuits. Who in their right mind would defend a language that has such major and obvious design flaws if a genuine alternative is there.
dtx1··on YouTube now flooding your ad-block with "fake" ads that slow the browser
How would one do that.
dtx1··on YouTube now flooding your ad-block with "fake" ads that slow the browser
I've been wondering why my firefox has been so laggy on youtube but didn't put it together.
dtx1··on Why Proton VPN doesn't use RAM-only VPN servers
Proton is a honeypot and articles like this essentially prove that. What absolute nonsense.
dtx1··on Show HN: Haystack – an IDE for exploring and editing code on an infinite canvas
This fits my mental model when coding so well. I love it!
dtx1··on Stremio OS Is Now Available for Raspberry Pi 5 and 4
I'm on several and have no issues, I just seed when my computer is on but with low bandwidth. I live by long seedtimes, bonus systems and Freeleech and have easily a few terrabytes of buffer on my trackers
dtx1··on No More Blue Fridays
I have no insight into this particular project but you could work around the halting problem by only allowing loops you can proof will not go infinite. That would of course imply rejecting loops that won't go infinite but can't be proven not to.
dtx1··on CrowdStrike's Falcon Sensor also linked to Linux kernel panics and crashes
But being certified for RedHat Linux doesn't protect you from Bugs in the RedHat Kernel. That's on RedHat.
dtx1··on Stremio OS Is Now Available for Raspberry Pi 5 and 4
As a heavy private tracker user I have found that most private trackers life and die by super seeders from seedboxes, just seeding from a home connection doesn't contribute any meaningful bandwidth and only helps you get bonus points from your tracker.
dtx1··on Anna’s Archive approaching 1 petabyte
I am immensely curious about everything AA is doing but I guess all my questions better remain unanswered for the sake of the project. But perhaps, if you are interested, you might chose to answer some of them.

How are you holding up? Do you notice the persecutocutorial pressure on a day to day basis?

How is the Project being financed? How is the financing being protected from the legal pressures? Just having one petabyte of data somewhere is expensive. Are KYC an issue for you?

I would think that any large enough law enforcement would be able to take down not just your domains but also your servers. Why is it that enforcement seems to focus on domains not on server seizures?

What protective measures and backup plans do you have in place? Any Opsec tips to share for small time pirates?

dtx1··on Overcoming the limits of current LLMs
I think we should start smaller and make them able to count first.
dtx1··on Firefox 128 enables "privacy-preserving" ad measurements by default
I remember when Browsers were User-Agents and worked for the sole benefit of the user. These days they are Advertisement-Agents. And especially for Firefox to survive Mozilla should go down the road of being a user agent and a user agent only. What other use is there for firefox? It's not faster, it's soon not going to be more private and it is less secure than chromium based browsers.

dtx1··on Second factor SMS: Worse than its reputation
> So really the ideal is not just having an app that generates a token but one that generates a specific type of token depending on what type of transaction you're performing and won't accept, for example, a login token when adding a new payee. I haven't seen any bank with that level of 2fa yet, has anyone else?

My local german bank uses an App specifically for 2fa. When i log in i have to approve the login within the app and the website redirects automatically. It shows me that I am approving a login or a transaction with all the transaction details. Since I don't enter my second factor into the browser, a replay wouldn't be possible and it would be VERY obvious to spot the difference between approving a login and approving a transaction. German Sparkasse for those that care.

Show me a single rocket carrying any payload into orbit and land again afterwards that isn't made by SpaceX. I'll wait.
dtx1··on Johns Hopkins medical school will be free for most after $1B donation
To be fair SpaceX is pretty impressive. Wether that's Musks doing can be argued somewhat but it's still fair to say he's been deeply involved
