dtf··on Blender 2.79 released
The sRGB image might look punchier at first, but once you start looking closer you'll see it's blown out and the colours are wrong. It's like putting 10 spoonfuls of sugar in your coffee.
dtf··on US government halts study on health effects of coal mining
Lysenkoism proved fruitful many unpopular subjects.
dtf··on Blender 2.79: OpenCL on par with CUDA
I must have missed that news, that showreel is phenomenal! Linked in the comments was a Reddit AMA with the VFX creators, including this really interesting reply on their choice of Blender:

Pretty sure your driver supports that (glxinfo |grep ARB_copy_image). Maybe you don't have GLEW >= 2.0?
dtf··on Parkinson’s disease ‘may start in gut’
Last year, there was an interesting story about a woman who could smell a certain odour that seemed to be given off by people with Parkinson's (primarily her husband).

dtf··on Drawing isometric boxes in the correct order
I was very glad to find this page earlier this week, after scratching my head while implementing an isometric renderer for a client. I had assumed it would be a simple back-to-front order, but this page and a few others pointed out that the partial ordering required to 1) use an intersection test to build disjoint sets of confused objects, 2) use a pairwise order test to determine inter-object dependencies, 3 ) use a topological sort to resolve the ultimate drawing order.

This method was implemented in some fantastic 1980s computer games, and the developer had named their technique "Filmation". Here's a discussion of that system, plus a demo of the rendering bug caused by not bothering to break dependency cycles as discussed in the main article:

http://bannalia.blogspot.co.uk/2008/02/filmation-math.html

(also I just found another with a load more details on the Filmation games: http://retrospec.sgn.net/users/nwalker/filmation/)

dtf··on Growing Unease as British Mutual Funds Block the Exit Doors
Well, there's a fair chance now that Andrea Leadsom will become PM. And she's definitely crazy enough to do it, regardless of consequence.

dtf··on Apple wants the FBI to reveal how it hacked the San Bernardino killer's iPhone
If it was a million dollar hardware-level exploit, does it really matter? Much of the excited reporting on this seems to assume the FBI exploited an iOS software bug... do the press know something we don't?
dtf··on Stop Obama’s Internet Giveaway
"The Internet as we know it won’t survive if other governments get their way."

Here's a quick recap from TechDirt on the kind of Internet the author of this article would prefer:

dtf··on Insecure by design: protocols for encrypted phone calls
I think we can take banking to mean those particularly wicked fruits of the City of London... things like AIG's collapse, LIBOR and FX rigging, HSBC's drug money laundering, the seemlingly endless scandals of UK retail banking like PPIs, etc etc that have completely eroded the general public's trust of our pinstriped friends. Nobody's complaining about banking. We're worried about banking.
dtf··on iTerm2 Version 3 Now in Beta
ConEmu + Clink... and it looks so pretty. Thanks, will give it a go!
dtf··on iTerm2 Version 3 Now in Beta
I'm a Linux user, and I use iTerm when I'm on a Mac and ConEmu on Windows. Are there some features I'm missing out on?
dtf··on The NICAM Codec replacement project
Apologies for that, I submitted this and did actually go looking for the HN title guidelines, which seemed to say use the original title. I'll try to be a little braver with title editing in future.
dtf··on In Memoriam: Ian Murdock

dtf··on Introduction to the Math of Computer Graphics
Visualising Quaternions is a book which goes into much beautiful depth about what they represent and how they behave, if you fancy digging deeper than the everyday practicality of them.
dtf··on The trouble with saying you don't want children
If you added the equivalent of a spam button ("I don't like this"), took the user's history into account, and relations with other users, would there be a way to pre-flag posts much like a spam detector?

Although I suppose even if it were an interesting and feasible AI project, and even if it were useful to some users, it's probably something Twitter just wouldn't want to get into. They would be setting themselves up for endless political flak when it did or didn't work correctly.

dtf··on Details of UK website visits 'to be stored for year'
The current UK government has committed to:

  1. ban encryption (any encryption worth its salt)
  2. ban anything psychoactive
  3. detach us from the European Convention of Human Rights.
Not one of these things is achievable in practice. This posturing and will amount to nothing but farce in the face of the details.

dtf··on TalkTalk cyber-attack: Website hit by 'significant' breach
Someone on the radio just said it was an SQL injection. Can it get any more comical?

Meanwhile TalkTalk & Met Police PR machines are in full flow talking up exotic claims of cyberjihadiism to deflect responsibility.
