dstroot··on Regolith Linux
“Regality Linux” is misleading. Perhaps should be called “Regolith Desktop Environment”? It’s not a full distro.

“Regolith is a modern desktop environment designed to let you work faster by reducing unnecessary clutter and ceremony. Built on top of Ubuntu, GNOME, and i3,”

Should have ended right there and dropped the mic.

Refunding the $40 was the right move and in keeping with CD Baby's ethos of the artist comes first.

dstroot··on Toyota suspends domestic factory operations after suspected cyber attack
Nothing mentioned on Toyota's site: https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/

Supplier is apparently Kojima Industries, their website is being hammered: https://www.kojima-tns.co.jp/en/. Or maybe it's down because of the attack?

dstroot··on Cocktail party ideas
One of my earliest "ah ha" moments in managing software engineers is asking them to do something and the answers tended to be "that's really really hard" or "that's simple". The realization was they were actually telling me "I don't know how to do that" or "I know how to do that". Once someone figured out how to do the really really hard thing it somehow became "simple". Now when someone tells me something is "hard" I can't seem to shake the bias that they just don't know...

Conversely, non-technical business people are very highly likely to tell me some piece of engineering is "easy" or "simple" when they have no background, or knowledge, at all.

dstroot··on Fetch API has landed into Node.js
THANKS!
dstroot··on Fetch API has landed into Node.js
First, this is awesome and congratulations! Second this sounds like a lot of work! Can you comment why was it so hard to add fetch to node, yet packages like “node-fetch” have existed for some time and seem to implement fetch rather easily? Only asking from a curiosity perspective.
dstroot··on A UX designer walks into a Tesla Bar
Take my upvote. Came here to say exactly this. If the author is getting attacked on Twitter I wonder how many of the attackers are Tesla shareholders (or bots for shareholders) vs actual owners. The new UI is a step back and hides often used functions that used to be “one click” off the Home Screen. Changing driver profiles is a great example.
dstroot··on UBS Acquires Wealthfront for $1.4B

dstroot··on The QT Timebomb
This. As bond rates rise capital moves out of stocks over to bonds. Bonds are higher in the capital structure as well. When bond rates go absurdly low capital moves into stocks (as we have seen).
dstroot··on Hellofresh employees' open salary initiative
I would be concerned about the correlation to increased resentment to increased transparency. If you want to know if you are paid fairly there is a “talent marketplace” to do price/value discovery. Employees do not have the full breadth of information managers use to set compensation and mangers cannot share their reasoning. Some employees are more motivated by title or other types of recognition other than comp as well.
dstroot··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
I think as you make your way up the career ladder it starts to become less about compensation and more about the culture and politics. I would accept less compensation to work in an organization with clear goals, clear accountability, and a better, more open culture.

One item missing above is “People”. The people you work with directly on a day to day basis, including of course your own leadership make a huge impact in your work satisfaction.

dstroot··on “Fast Kernel Headers” Tree -v1: Eliminate the Linux Kernel's “Dependency Hell”
"Don't forget that Linux became only possible because 20 years of OS research was carefully studied, analyzed, discussed and thrown away."

dstroot··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
I read quite a bit about Stoicism - an ancient Greek school of philosophy founded at Athens by Zeno of Citium. The school taught that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.

The Stoics elaborated a detailed taxonomy of virtue, dividing virtue into four main types: wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation.

Many may not view this as “spiritual” as it does not address “spirits” but rather personal empowerment.

dstroot··on Two custom React hooks
> In the case of modern front end engineering and React especially, you can reduce everything down to two simple concepts... > Rendering the current state > Updating the state.

Not a fan of the negativity in this post (I use hooks all the time) but the advice to separate concerns about managing state and rendering the state is GREAT for ANY architecture.

dstroot··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
Was going to say exactly this. Reasonable people with reasonable views have no reason to promote themselves or their views on Facebook. However non-reasonable people with non-reasonable views promote heavily for clicks/engagement to sell you something, or just to “idiot farm” to sell the idiots something later.

Facebook’s unregulated revenue model will keep ensuring this dynamic.

dstroot··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
> For example, several of the next.js examples[1] use tailwind without explicitly stating so, because I guess it's just become a ubiquitous as css stylesheets or modules for some people

I used Bootstrap for years and give MDO major props. I learned Tailwindcss actually because it was starting to show up everywhere and many of the Next.js examples were using it. Now that I have used it I would say it changes how you think about css and styling - it gives you more power and more guardrails and it also then ships a smaller css load to the client. It was always a struggle to carve away the parts of Bootstrap you weren't using.
