dsparkman··on Privileged Ports Are Expensive (2016)
The reality is that this is not that infeasible a change as everyone wants us to think that it is. It is simply a change to the DNS resolution logic for HTTP/HTTPS. The major browser vendors could make the change in relatively short order. The major hurdle is that it would increase the number of DNS queries to resolve a website.

XMPP is an example of a protocol that currently has this correct, in that it uses SRV records to control ports for a given host.

dsparkman··on Ask HN: How did you become a good developer?
Tens of Thousands of lines of code. Repeat.
dsparkman··on Differentiating laptops: How about a decent keyboard? (2015)
Actually, give us an IBM ThinkPad 701 with modern internals.Throw in a really large battery with an OLED display, and you have a great machine. :)
dsparkman··on Comcast accused of cutting competitor’s wires to put it out of business
Yeah, they do this all the time. When I was having Comcast install the internet at my home the technician cut the satellite cables running into my home. I ended up having to have Dish come out and fix what the Comcast tech had done. The Comcast tech was like "sorry, but we always 'disconnect' old runs"
dsparkman··on Comdb2 – Bloomberg's distributed RDBMS under Apache 2
They were, but rediculously expensive at the time. $100k+ at the time to have a non-replicated version on Oracle running on a multicore server. Dealing with Oracle was like dealing with the mob.
dsparkman··on Mark Zuckerberg Calls for a Universal Basic Income
UBI would need to implemented as a Negative Income Tax where all welfare programs are effectively replaced by the NIT. I think the one caveat would be that for UBI to work under this model, that there is universal healthcare in the mix. The cost of healthcare is used as a benchmark against which the NIT threshold is set.
dsparkman··on CockroachDB 1.0
Why not simply have the cluster sync a time between themselves? First node in the cluster gets the time, and as the new nodes come online they set their own internal time via the cluster? So in a world where there is not NTP or atomic clocks the system could continue to operate.
dsparkman··on Trump Wants Tax Plan to Cut Corporate Rate to 15%
Shareholder's are speculators, speculators speculate.

Most US public companies do not pay dividends to shareholders. An "investment" in this scenario is not an investment but speculation. You are speculating that you can convince others to pay more for my shares than I paid for them.

dsparkman··on Trump Wants Tax Plan to Cut Corporate Rate to 15%
You really need to watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBx2Y5HhplI if you think that because corporations have to pay less in taxes that they will suddenly spend more on R&D and jobs.
dsparkman··on 94-year-old Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Introduces Solid State Battery
No rare earth minerals.
dsparkman··on Ask HN: Which Go web framework should i use in 2016?
Another one that has gotten quite mature in the Go space is Beego: https://beego.me/

There is even a fairly good book on using Beego to develop web apps with Go. https://astaxie.gitbooks.io/build-web-application-with-golan...

dsparkman··on How We Survived the Dyn DNS Outage
Great to see a company use DNS properly. Basically, this is how the internet was designed to work, but startup land forgot it. Problem you have when you do not hire people over 30 :)
dsparkman··on The future doesn't come in a box
Well done commercial for Cloudflare.
dsparkman··on Ask HN: Is the world really short of software developers?
Nope. Silicon Valley has run out of "bros."
dsparkman··on Ask HN: Do you read a Golang's package source before you import it?
I do read through the source code of any external package I use in Go.

I do the same thing in all languages.

That is why I tend to use as little external dependencies as possible.

dsparkman··on I wish there was a modern correspondence medium similar to letters
There is a modern media similar to sending letters ... sending letters. Last time I checked you could still post a letter in the mail to far off places.
dsparkman··on Ask HN: Which language for writing a fast, distributable command-line tool?
I would say Go. Stick with the standard library and you compiling for all the supported platforms is pretty straight-forward.
dsparkman··on Ask HN: Is email here to stay? Will there be an alternative?
E-mail is here to stay.

* First social network * Fully distributed * Supports offline use

Why replace it?

dsparkman··on How one developer just broke Node, Babel and thousands of projects
Which was his right as the publisher of the modules. Open Source < > Public Domain.
dsparkman··on Google’s AMP Poised to Take the Lead from Facebook’s and Apple’s Walled Gardens
Probably a blank screen since AMP requires this in your pages: <style>body {opacity: 0}</style><noscript><style>body {opacity: 1}</style></noscript>
dsparkman··on The Triumph of Email
Email's greatest advantage is that it is a distributed system. No silos involved. If I want to run my own system, I can. The current hipster tech crowd seems to forget the very definition of the term Internet (network of networks). As such, the systems designed at its origin were design to work in a distributed fashion.

Email is not dead. Email is just plumbing. Want a different experience with it, use better software layered on top.

dsparkman··on Ask HN: Should I incorporate as a freelancer?
Go with a LLC. The paperwork requirements are minimal in most US states. It will also provide protection of personal assets in most cases, in the event there is a lawsuit, etc. I would also make sure that you get a general liability insurance policy.
dsparkman··on API Security for Modern Web Apps
Wow. Native advertising posted without attribution as being an ad. Pretty sure that violates some FTC rules on advertising.
