dsalzman··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
There is a company that does this but senses direct from your circuit breaker panel. The uses FFT plus algos to determine individual devices on each circuit from their unique electrical signature. Called Sense I believe. I’ve never used it.
dsalzman··on The Forth Deck mini: a portable Forth computer with a discrete CPU
I use an Alphasmart Neo for journaling. Recently modded it with an ESP32 for wireless file transfer. I love it!

dsalzman··on Show HN: I made a tiny camera with super long battery life
Trail cameras are much larger. So if size is a restraint this could be better, but valid point. Most trail cameras use 8x AA batteries!
dsalzman··on Study uses wearables to show that physical activity lengthens REM latency
“65 participants (Mage = 21.40, SD = 3.21, N = 42 females) with an average of 35.20 (SD = 27.01) days of observation per participant.”
dsalzman··on Study uses wearables to show that physical activity lengthens REM latency
This is one of the great “no shit” type studies. Good to validate basic and ancient wisdom I guess.
dsalzman··on Instinctive Sleeping and Resting Postures (2000)
The interesting point of this article to me is not the positions but the sleeping surface. Due to my newborn I’ve been sleeping on the floor on a thin yoga mat for over three months and my back and joints feel great. The pressure from the hard ground is like stretching while you sleep. Took a few weeks to get used to it though.
dsalzman··on Show HN: Schedule iMessage Texts from .txt Files
I use it more as a reminder system. Someone tells me to checkin next week or in a couple days and I can just schedule the text right then so I dont forget.
dsalzman··on Show HN: Schedule iMessage Texts from .txt Files
I’ve built something similar with ios shortcuts. One shortcut that uses prompts and data jar to schedule and store messages. It also creates a cal event as a reminder to myself. It supports group texts. Then I have three automations that run in the morning, noon, and afternoon that check for scheduled messages and send them. Works well. Happy to share if interest.
dsalzman··on The greenest car in America isn't an EV
During this energy transition phase more emphasis should be on PHEVs since

1. We have the infrastructure to build PHEVs faster than EVs. Since they are mostly modifications of current vehicles.

2. With the same amount of battery material to make 1 EV we can make ~10 PHEVs and adding that to the fact that most people drive less than 40 miles per day, the effective electric range of a typical PHEV, you are utilizing the battery supply at a much higher level.

I think the current incentives and tax breaks that favor high end luxury EVs have been a mistake. If you can afford a Tesla Model S or a Rivian you don't need a tax incentive to buy it!

dsalzman··on Sam Altman Seeks Trillions of Dollars to Reshape Business of Chips and AI
Agreed. commoditizing the complement of OpenAIs models.

dsalzman··on Tiny volumetric display
Nice example of persistence of vision display. You can use large stick versions of this to “paint” images by waving them around.

dsalzman··on Ask HN: Batch Processing with OpenAI

dsalzman··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
The apple lisa was 25k when adjusted for inflation…prices are for early adopters
dsalzman··on Building and operating a pretty big storage system called S3
> Imagine a hard drive head as a 747 flying over a grassy field at 75 miles per hour. The air gap between the bottom of the plane and the top of the grass is two sheets of paper. Now, if we measure bits on the disk as blades of grass, the track width would be 4.6 blades of grass wide and the bit length would be one blade of grass. As the plane flew over the grass it would count blades of grass and only miss one blade for every 25 thousand times the plane circled the Earth.
dsalzman··on NeetoCal, a calendly alternative, is a commodity and is priced accordingly
NeetoCal is $4/user/month for pro

Calendly is $8/user/month for essentials tier and $12/month for professional tier

dsalzman··on Ask HN: GPT4 is out and Apple's Siri still sucks. What is Apple's strategy?
I hope they buy and back some of these companies building local/on-prem capable models to run locally on iOS. Add in some proprietary ML chip tech to run it efficiently on mobile and they will capture a big market. Having intimate personal assistant requests uploaded to MSFT/OpenAI is a deal breaker for me.
dsalzman··on A Whale-Oiled Machine
There is a very interesting HBS case on whaling [0]. It explains how the high risk and high return nature of whaling drove the development of concepts like syndication and limited liability corps that we take for granted today. Pretty interesting the tangible connections of modern startups and VC to hunting for whales.

dsalzman··on Show HN: YouTube Summaries Using GPT
Really cool Alex! I think it would also be interesting to pull and use the most rewatched data[1] from each video too as an additional weight. That is how I usually skip to the "important" parts without a summary.

That's why I bought a washer dryer set from Speed Queen. No smarts - just a few knobs and buttons. They work great!

dsalzman··on AIOC: Ham Radio All-in-One-Cable
For the curious - I followed the "How to Fab" instructions to get pricing. Came out to $57.72 + tax/shipping for QTY 5 from JLCPCB.com . That includes making the PCB and assembly of the components besides the TRS connectors. Cheaper than I thought!!
dsalzman··on There has never been a better time to be short
"When you mate with shorter people, you’re potentially saving the planet by shrinking the needs of subsequent generations. Lowering the height minimum for prospective partners on your dating profile is a step toward a greener planet."

What ever floats your boat I guess...

dsalzman··on I hate living in my tiny house (2019)
Isn’t the biggest reason to build on wheels is to register the tiny house as a vehicle and not pay property taxes on the house value?
