dsaavy··on 'No doubt left' about scientific consensus on global warming, say experts
Ah, I misread where the 97% and 99% consensus was attributed to, good catch. I do wonder where the Americans who don’t believe global warming is occurring fall on the socioeconomic ladder and potential large-scale impact on climate outcomes.

This part still worries me the most though: “The pushback has been political rather than scientific. In the US, the rightwing thinktank the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CPI) is reportedly putting pressure on Nasa to remove a reference to the 97% study from its webpage. The CPI has received event funding from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers and Charles Koch Institute, which have much to lose from a transition to a low-carbon economy.”

dsaavy··on 'No doubt left' about scientific consensus on global warming, say experts
On the part about researching evidence for other accelerated climate events through trees, ice, and sediment; does anyone know if nature contributes to any long term “smoothing” of these types of evidence? I’m not too familiar with the processes used by scientists in these related fields but would love some reading materials.
dsaavy··on 'No doubt left' about scientific consensus on global warming, say experts
“The bad news is there is still a lot of work to do yet as climate deniers continue to persistently attack the scientific consensus.”

The impact of climate change deniers who are simply rejecting the scientific consensus is vastly overblown IMO. Those who actually impact climate change on a large scale (executives at large corporations, policymakers across the globe, etc.) are choosing to ignore scientific consensus for financial and power related reasons.

It’s a red herring to focus on the last 1-3% of true “non-believers”. Everyone should be focusing on explicitly calling out nefarious actors.

dsaavy··on Jeff Bezos: I spend my billions on space because we’re destroying Earth
Haven’t heard of this before, thanks for the share!
dsaavy··on Jeff Bezos: I spend my billions on space because we’re destroying Earth
Warning: Opinion

I’m a little conflicted, Amazon as a company has enabled an even greater level of wasteful consumerism. Bezos seems to be trying to solve a problem he has helped accelerate.

I just don’t know how many other ways you can try to take on a mission like Blue Origin without building a massive fortune off of current unsustainable practices.

Kind of seems like digging a bigger hole and using profit off of dirt sales to fund an experimental dirt filling business.

Plus, how much impact could someone like Bezos have in the reversal of desertification and expansion of practices like permaculture? That would seem like a way to extend the timeline for space exploration while helping preserve what we currently have on Earth.

dsaavy··on The insulin racket: why a drug made free 100 years ago is recently expensive
It’s not “fairly dangerous to use”. Unlike aspart, Regular is less potent and has a slower and longer activity profile. If you have poor food absorption after a meal, take the wrong dose, or have any other event that would change your insulin requirements, you will find yourself in much sooner trouble with less time to react from aspart versions.
dsaavy··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
I commented on your other submission as well. I’d be interested in buying this, feel free to email me, info is in profile.
dsaavy··on Ask HN: Best place to sell a web app?
Hey, I’d be interested in buying the web app (if it’s the one I think it is). Feel free to drop me an email (in profile).
dsaavy··on Ask HN: What do you use for Real-Time dashboards?
Check our Brian Greig’s Medium article called “Websocket and Data Visualization”.
dsaavy··on Planet’s ocean-plastics problem detailed in 60-year data set
I ended up making a visualization for the second source just for fun. https://public.tableau.com/shared/X9CQJ7QKK?:display_count=y...

It's a path visualization from the starting and ending coordinates with classification of the entanglement recorded.

The second data source was just natural entanglements that occurred, not the plastic ones... kicking myself for not starting with the first data source. I'll probably end up doing the same thing for plastics.

dsaavy··on Nobody Likes the “Idea Guy”
Downloaded it to give it a try and compare against an app I’ve been using called Speechify (heard about that one on a podcast). Congrats on getting an idea to materialize, you’re right in that’s the hardest part!
dsaavy··on New pill can deliver insulin
As a type 1 diabetic, this isn’t remotely true for me. Novolog and its equivalents made timing impossible for peaks of insulin and food absorption. Also made low carb impossible due to the peak pattern of the insulin compared to digestion of low carb, high protein meals. Insulin pumps with combo boluses resulted in unpredictable absorption due to scar tissue from having low body fat percentage.

Ended up switching back to generic novolin R (regular) as injections which allows me to use different areas of the body, eat low carb, and dropped my a1c down 3 points. Reduced my standard deviation of blood sugars by about 45 as well.

Every diabetic is different though as others have found great success with novolog, insulin pumps, etc.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Due to its simplicity and truthfulness for me: Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi.

Not only did it help me see that no matter how accomplished/famous/old someone is, there is the demystifying shared thing that we all do, but also humbled me when I get too full of my skills or experience with anything in life. It’s a pretty silly thing but always pops in my mind and changes my behavior almost instantly.

Obviously it didn’t change the way I think about everything but changed the way I think about everything with people and social situations.

dsaavy··on Why Are Young People Pretending to Love Work?
While I enjoy my work, you’ve got to have breaks even from things you love. It seems doubtful that even if someone is in love with something, they try to spend all day, every day thinking about it or doing it. Heck, I love my SO and my dogs but I need breaks from them as well lol.

Some people love work, some people don’t. That being said, the excessive propaganda that work, work, work doesn’t typically benefit the person working as much as those they report to, like the article points out. That seems to be the main issue rather than an entrepreneur trying to materialize their dream.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: What is your best passive income 2019?
For the past couple years I’ve been running a pet supply business focused on eco friendly and high quality toys, treats, collars, etc.

Originally started as a T-shirt company specializing in dog puns but expanded a couple years in. The T-shirts are all printed and fulfilled by a US company and I have the pet supply inventory at my house so it’s quick to ship. Not entirely passive but only takes about 5-10 hours each week.

Been gaining momentum recently so it’s been an increasingly better income source.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: How do you balance side project time?
While others suggested only doing one side project until completion (which is an overall good strategy), I know the feeling of having tons of exciting ideas/side projects that you just don't want to completely put aside. My strategy has made some compromises on the overall completion date, but scratches the itch I have to work on different projects.

Basically, I spend one month focusing on a single project so that I get good mental focus for the month and then am able to feel like I'm still doing multiple side projects in a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, when I come back around to the same project a few months later, I have a fresh perspective along with some (hopefully) new skills or skill levels. That's how I find a balance.

Per day, I basically just work however long I feel like it. If I have plans with friends or want to work out or something I just go do it. Makes it low pressure and let's me make sure I'm always enjoying doing my side project work.
