Why do you think substack doesn't count as paying for news?
ds206··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
I thought we were talking about the people who have taken to hating white people for being white?

But you said they were trolls? And we should call it out? Isn't that what the poster above you was doing?

Talking in circles, in circles...

> Retail investors putting money into the market _at all_ is a net win for wall street _every time_ imo.

This is what I think to myself everytime I see one of those Acorn ads.

ds206··on Ants Are Practically Immune to Traffic Jams
If I can see the next section of stopped cars, I will slowly accelerate and time it so that by the time I reach them, I don't have to stop and can continue driving at a somewhat constant rate.

I'm not sure speeding up as fast as you can helps because usually there is another jam around the corner.

ds206··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
My daughter started around 4 after she could hold an Xbox 1 controller. She could hardly push any buttons or move the characters around in the beginning, but within a few weeks she had mastered the common stuff. She usually sticks to creative mode because the monsters used to scare her. She got over that too after learning how to spawn them herself and then it became: how many skeletons can I fit in my house? It's been amazing to watch her growth.
ds206··on The Remote Manifesto
The company I work for just updated their policy to allow each team to pick their own schedules. I'm currently working 3 days in the office and 2 at home. It's been great so far and allows for the best of both worlds. I get the distracted office banter and face-to-face relationships as well as focused productivity at home. I'm really into it.
ds206··on I'm Against Podcasts
Blab is definitely the reason I listen to some podcasts. It's real. I get tired of the perfectly edited videos and television shows. Even better are LIVE podcasts where the show could go off the rails at any moment :)
ds206··on Things I Enjoy in Rust: Error Handling
It's how you explicitly cast from one type to another. To use the ? operator with a custom error type, it needs to be converted to the std error type.
ds206··on CSS coding techniques
It's so bad in SharePoint. I try to avoid !important as much as possible, but it's really hard. Maybe it'll get better with the release of the SP Framework. Who knows?
ds206··on Turkish Citizenship Database Leaked
I use KeyPass and save all the security questions and answers too. I should use fake answers next time though...
ds206··on Show HN: Impulse – Dynamic JS Animations for the Mobile Web
I'm currently running 4.4.2 on a Verizon LG G2. I'm using the "HN - Hacker News Reader" app by Manuel Maly. Hope that helps.
ds206··on Show HN: Impulse – Dynamic JS Animations for the Mobile Web
FYI, after dragging the title around, then tapping on the menu icon, the menu is broken. It starts sliding down, but doesn't stop and slides off the page. If I refresh and don't drag the title, it works as expected. Chrome on Android.

EDIT: I was mistaken. I'm using an app to view HN and it uses the built-in browser view to view websites. That's the browser that's broken. Chrome on Android works great.

They also made a card game based on the raid:

"Hacker is the Computer Crime Card Game. It was inspired by the 1990 Secret Service raid on SJ Games."

I have a friend that has this, although I haven't played it.

ds206··on Show HN: Subway, a persistent web client for IRC
This same idea was my excuse to learn javascript/node :) I went the "re-invent the wheel" route and skipped node-irc and Backbone for extra javascript fun.

The interface looks good from the screenshots but how well does it work on a phone? For that reason I went with a minimal terminal-like interface to make it possible.

I will check this out tonight. Good job.

ds206··on Coding Skill and the Decline of Stagnation
On the other hand someone who is more taught by experience will start by writing awful code like putting their whole program into 1 or 2 functions , they will then experience pain points because of this and realise certain re-occuring problems and either come up with their own solutions to them or read "gang of 4" , this will teach them design patterns the natural way.

This is exactly how I taught myself. The transition from unorganized to organized (patterns) happened for me pretty naturally. For me, it was learn how to organize, or quit. Now-a-days, patterns are everywhere (and probably have been, but I didn't get it until I got it :)
