dry_soup··on Notes on Living in Los Angeles
I'd rather eat Japanese food in LA than American food in Tokyo, and it's not even close. But the average restaurant is probably better in Tokyo than in LA.
dry_soup··on Find Someone to play chess with in London

dry_soup··on We need a Butlerian Jihad against AI
It says a lot about what injustices we have learned to accept that AI alarmists focus almost exclusively on the scifi-level hypothetical dangers of AI, rather than the very real problems it already causes today.

Those problems largely fall into three categories that I can think of off the top of my head at 1am:

1. AI is a convenient way to justify potentially uncomfortable decisions you would have made otherwise (idlewords said it best: "AI is money laundering for bias")

2. AI is being used in situations where it can be a threat to life and limb, like the current crop of self-driving(ish) cars

3. Essentially all of the gains from automating work going to people who already have capital

dry_soup··on GitHub was having issues
If you're OK with waiting multiple hours for CI, I suppose these issues wouldn't affect you very much. Where I work we make relatively small PRs and deploy to production tens of times per day. The recent outages have been a nightmare for us.
dry_soup··on Why the new USPS mail trucks look so weird
I really like the look. In a few years everyone will forget about it being "weird".
dry_soup··on If Materialism Is True, the United States Is Probably Conscious (2015)
I have no idea what is meant by materialism in this context
dry_soup··on The frame rate of the universe (2009)
Wouldn't it be that times three, one for each dimension?
dry_soup··on Philosophy of Mathematics (SEP)
It seems incorrect to me to treat mathematics as a science. Mathematical concepts are quite arbitrary in the sense that we choose definitions that suit our purposes. And mathematics isn't "observed" and studied empirically.
dry_soup··on Four-day week means 'I don't waste holidays on chores'
I have to agree. I'm on vacation right now and I've been spending several full days cleaning my house and upgrading my home workspace.
dry_soup··on No Cookie for You
A lot of people have the misconception that the EU cookie law applies to all cookies, but as the blog post correctly points out, that just isn't the case.
dry_soup··on Oasis: a small statically-linked Linux system
I'll never use this but it's cool that it exists.
dry_soup··on Why Is Scientific Illiteracy So Acceptable?
My apologies. I didn't know that Skull Calipers Monthly was such a popular periodical on HN!
dry_soup··on Why Is Scientific Illiteracy So Acceptable?
Quilette is an interesting choice of publication, given that they don't mind promoting one particular kind of "scientific" literacy:

dry_soup··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
I see, thanks!
dry_soup··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
Maybe a stupid question: Is this the standard measurement of effectiveness? I.e. you give the control group a dummy vaccine, the test group the real vaccine, and you just wait for them to be infected? Why not test for antibody development?
dry_soup··on VLC and Qt – A History [video]
1. One great thing about open source is that nobody is forcing you to upgrade. You can stick with VLC 3.x forever, and as mentioned in the video, it will be a long-term support release.

2. Jean-Baptiste Kempf was offered tens of millions of euros to put ads in VLC, but turned down the offer (link in French)[1]

dry_soup··on Jack Dorsey: Twitter has no influence over elections
Additionally, why would advertisers buy ads on an uninfluential platform?
dry_soup··on iPhone 12 Pro so costly in India, you can fly to Dubai to buy it and save money
Since the article lists prices in INR: The price of the iPhone 12 Pro in India in USD today is $1,615.22, and the price in Dubai is $1,140.15. So it must be possible to fly round-trip to Dubai for less than about $475, which seems plausible.
dry_soup··on Epic Systems workers are organizing
Paying employees according to the true value of their labor is tempting at first, but you better be careful-- Apply the principle too consistently and the C-suite gets a huge pay cut.
dry_soup··on Many Americans are getting more money from unemployment than from their job
Under capitalism, no, that's not what anyone is working towards.
dry_soup··on Swedish epidemiology boss says questioned Covid-19 strategy seems to be working
Sure, but we're not talking about differences within a margin of error here.
dry_soup··on Hackers tell the story of the Twitter attack from the inside
> The interviews indicate that the attack was not the work of a nation-state or a sophisticated group of hackers.

So it was not the work of "a state in which a great majority shares the same culture and is conscious of it"?

dry_soup··on How to Run a Live Coding Stream on Twitch Using OBS
The "We'll Be Right Back" sound is from The Eric Andre Show. It's usually used to cut right as something really chaotic happens. Here's a very tame example by the standards of the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVhme1eb8SI
dry_soup··on Apple Silicon: The Passing of Wintel
Yes. They want to take as much credit as they can. This isn't a dig at Apple, it's a rational decision.
dry_soup··on GitHub was down
In the OP you can see that GH pages are currently the only service that is not broken
dry_soup··on MuseScore 4: Moving from notation software to composition software
Exciting news! This feels like a Blender 2.8-style project.

What's funny about this is that a composer/music YouTuber/UX designer called Tantacrul meticulously roasted MuseScore's UI on YouTube, and the MuseScore team ended up hiring him, leading to this project.

The video in question: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4hZxo96x48A

dry_soup··on Rewriting m4vgalib in Rust
This was more interesting than the average "rewrite in Rust" blog post. Specifically I thought the part about how having compiler-enforced memory safety allows for the use of patterns that would otherwise be difficult to use safely interesting.
dry_soup··on Anti Homeless Spikes
It's truly amazing that an incredibly rich city full of companies trying to "change the world" chooses over and over again to not solve its homelessness problem. It requires no new technological developments, no moonshots, just an ounce of empathy and maybe some raised taxes. But that seems to be too hard.
dry_soup··on What's new in Java 12, 13 and 14
Because I tried to access the page a few times over a two-hour period, and it always timed out.
