drwu··on Why keyboard shortcuts don't work on non-US layouts and how devs could fix it
I am a non German, but I spent more time using German layout than the US one. The killer feature of German keyboard: it is so natural for vim (and IDEs with vim emulation)

- the registers "+, "*, "~ are on the same key

- `,` and `;` for backward and forward searching are on the same key

- the macro operations `q` and `@` are also on the same key

- `^` for the line beginning is the key left to `1`, which also makes sense for `Ctrl+^` to switch recent buffers.

drwu··on AMD Launches Ryzen 5000 Mobile: Zen 3 and Cezanne for Notebooks
About better linux support: VDPAU does not have browser hardware accelerated video decoding yet. It seems both AMD and Intel based on VA have this feature already.

However, I had to choose NVIDIA only because of CUDA.

drwu··on Plain Text Accounting
In European countries, banks are forced to provide CSV files for the transaction lists. Though the columns are different between banks, the importer function (of gnucash) is usually capable of handling the fields flexibly.

The rest ist just batched categorization by searching and applying.

drwu··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
You could buy an 'ugly' domain. When it expires, no one would like to take it.
drwu··on Have you ever asked yourself “how did research get done before LateX?”
The automatic microtype is the killer feature for my own `unprofessional' publishing without Adobe suite.

Besides, the macro language of TeX is not the best programming language IMHO, but it just works, especially for the flexible control of long document.

3) Gradient mesh fill

4) Flexible guide lines for free 3D perspective drawing

5) Things are rasterized, which are for sure supported in SVG or PDF (well done, inkscape)

6) (optional) TeX export

Seems to support 4k HiDPI on windows finally.
drwu··on IBM bans USB, SD cards, flash drives and portable devices from every office
To be fair, Chinese technologies were also borrowed by other countries in the last 2000+ years of human history.
drwu··on Translations of the Dao De Jing
'道[2]' did not have the meaning of 'say; tell' until the Song dynasty, which was ~1000 years ago.

Therefore, it is questionable, whether the second '道' really means 'say; tell' in the text before 2000 years.

drwu··on A rundown of the new Gmail
I would use tutanota if they could change a simpler domain.

When I wake up on the second morning after I've registered an email account, it was impossible for me to remember whether the domain was tunanota, notatuna, nonanuta or tutanote...

Me too, at least before wayland being the standard.
drwu··on Lockheed Martin has obtained a patent for a compact fusion reactor
I was looking for the novel point for a long time.

It seems that this is just a confined plasma by magnetic mirrors.

Mirrors do not confine plasma well, at least for fusion.

drwu··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
thank you, exactly this is what I want verify, that it is just a coincident.
drwu··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
I thought `Chaaya` could mean 茶叶(chá'yè), while 茶 is the tea and 叶 are the leaves.

The interesting thing here is that the old pronunciation of 茶(cha) was with a long vocal (chaa), whereas 叶(ye) was short and sounded like (ya)

drwu··on Ask HN:Who else is getting Repository unavailable on all Bitbucket repositories?
I hope that bitbucket will not rollback as last time gitlab did. Fortunately last time I had just toy projects in gitlab.

> I mean, who uses touch screens for development?

Touch screen is very helpful if you do not plug a mouse. Not just for web/mobile apps.

For scrolling the console lines / codes, it gives you a better feeling than finding the correct Fn-key combination and location of the PageUp/Down keys. The scrolling using a touch screen is definitively not comparable with the two-finger gestures on the touch pad.

Selecting a window / moving window around is also more comfortable with a touchscreen than using the keyboard or touchpad.

drwu··on China Blocks Foreign Companies from Mapping Its Roads for Self-Driving Cars
To be fair, mapping and geo measuring were forbidden in China even before self driving becoming a popular topic.

Not only the foreign companies, even a lot of chinese companies are still not allowed to do such measurements.

It was rather a military decision than an economic one.

drwu··on Ask HN: Do you internationalize/localize your apps?
Depends.

For instance, in the scientific or some high-tech branches even for some IT topics, there are sometimes no official translations of the new ideologies.

drwu··on Build your own Terminal using Qt
When I was using `xmonad`, I built a VTK terminal into the WindowManager. The whole implementation was just several lines in Haskell, using its wrapper for VTK.

As we are comparing to MATLAB.

I'm wondering why there is no comment about the toolboxes in MATLAB. Several standard toolboxes are the main reasons, that I'm still staying in MATLAB.
