drw85··on Don't avoid workplace politics
That's not politics, that's just being a good person/employee. Politics is when you try to look that way, no matter the cost.

Often times, doing the good stuff and building credit for that takes a long time and the right environment to identify and credit it.

Playing the politics game is much faster/easier and leads to quick results, because all you have to do is be visible as much as possible and manipulate a little bit here and there.

People aren't great at identifying the career manipulator and in the short term will give those guys the promotion/responsibility.

drw85··on I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse
I guess most people here use adblockers, i do too. But occasionally, i have to use the internet without one and i am absolutely shocked.

Ads don't just show things, they forward you to websites that vibrate your phone and claim you won prizes on ebay, amazon, or apple.

Those ads and scripts are on completely legitimate newspapers, ebay, etc.

It's like those companies never use their own product or actually pay attention to what's happening.

The internet without adblockers is largely unusable and dangerous.

drw85··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
I don't think this is true anymore.

Facebook have gone so far down the 'algorithmic control' rabbit hole, it would most definitely be better if they weren't operating anymore.

They destroy people that don't question things with their algorithm driven bubble of misinformation.

drw85··on The Cult of Productivity Apps
I sometimes feel like the second brain obsession is some kind of form of OCD/hoarding. Nothing can ever be lost or thrown away and needs to be filed somewhere because 'it might be useful' one day.
drw85··on Sleep all comes down to the mitochondria
I don't think any of those actually do not sleep. They probably sleep less than normal and skimp on sleep, but i have a hard time believing that they actually do not sleep at all.
drw85··on Stop selling “unlimited”, when you mean “until we change our minds”
I think this is a somewhat short sighted perspective. It's not really augmenting, but replacing cognition.

I see people starting to unlearn working by themselves rapidly and becoming dependant on GPT, making themselves quite useless in the process. They no longer understand what they're working with and need the help from the tool to work. They're also entirely helpless when whatever 'AI' tool they use can't fix their problem.

This makes them both more replaceable and less marketable than before.

It will have and already has a huge impact. But it's kinda like the offshoring hype from a decade ago. Everyone moved their dev departments to a cheaper country, only to later realize that maybe cheap does not always mean better or even good. And it comes with a short term gain and a long term loss.

drw85··on There are no new ideas in AI, only new datasets
But the point here is, if i gave you a guitar with a string more or less. Or a different shaped guitar, you could play it.

If i give you a chess set with dwarf themed pieces and different colored squares, you could play immediately.

drw85··on There are no new ideas in AI, only new datasets
Which pretty much every line in it was written similarly somewhere else before, including an explanation and is somehow included in the massive data set it was trained on.

So far i have asked the AI some novel questions and it came up with novel answers full of hallucinated nonsense, since it copied some similarly named setting or library function and replaced a part of it's name with something i was looking for.

drw85··on There are no new ideas in AI, only new datasets
How is this ending anyones hunger? As long as humans are steering the ship, the commodity will be limited to those that control it and they will make all the money. If anything, it has a big potential to cause more hunger.
drw85··on There are no new ideas in AI, only new datasets
Spinal cord injury implies that you were born with those senses and then abruptly lost them.

In that case, all the processes and pathways in your brain are relying on and tied to those senses, so losing them might also disrupt or affect those pathways and how they function.

drw85··on AI more likely to create 'yes-men on servers' than any scientific breakthroughs
This is actually pretty pointless. Since the "AI" doesn't actually know anything.

For example the other day i asked ChatGPT about a problem i had with some generated code that didn't compile. It then told me about a setting in the generator (nswag), that didn't exist. I told it that this setting does not exist and it said something like: "Sorry, my bad, try the following" and then kept inventing this setting with slightly different names and values over and over again. There are similar settings that exist, so it just hallucinated a tiny bit of text inside all the snippets that it learned from.

This is also not the first time this happened, most of the times i tried using AI for help with things, it just made up some nonsense and wasted my time with it.

drw85··on Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time
I don't think this is true. Comedy is often times leading you down a somewhat obvious train of thought and then surprisingly diverting in a completely unexpected direction.

It's not that everyone in the audience knew exactly what the comedian was going to say, it's that the comedian made them think something and then surprised them with something funny or offensive that's completely different.

drw85··on Liquid Glass – WWDC25 [video]
In my experience that then leads to the politics game.

People will cling to those senior leaders and make themselves visible and important to be kept around and be validated and enabled.

drw85··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
The fragmentation was equally worse on the dev side. You couldn’t develop WP8 apps on Win7 and vice versa no WP7 apps on Win8. The same happened with Win8.1 and Win10. So you had 4 different phone OS completely incompatible.

At the time I was working on WP apps for a customer and needed 3 different OS installed to work on their apps.

drw85··on The Who Cares Era
I think there are different types of 'caring'. Of course you can't care about everything and everyone. but you should have some things in life that you care about.

Many people nowadays don't. Their job sucks and they don't care about it, they have no relationships, no real interests. They just distract themselves with meaningless things they don't actually care about. They watch videos/shows/streams they don't really care about. They play games they don't really care about. They eat food, but don't care about it. And they don't feel any motivation for anything anymore.

drw85··on The Who Cares Era
That's a very good point. I know quite some people that have absolutely no interests. All they do is play games all day. No a specific game that they really like, but any game that offers enough busy work to distract for a month or two. Aside from that maybe they watch some short form videos like you mentioned, when they eat their microwaved or ordered meal.

For some people now, i would be hard to summarise them. To describe them, other than 'plays games' or 'watches videos'. And you can tell something is missing, they're not happy, but distracted enough to not care.

drw85··on Cloudflare CEO: Football piracy blocks will claim lives
Streaming services bid on the licenses and spent so much investor money that they have to charge this much and still not make a profit.
drw85··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
There would be a new little device that is a fidget spinner with a little gummy on the side as a finger replacement.

Everyone would have one. :D

drw85··on Young men now spend more of their free time alone than any other group
Happy is a strange term.

I know a couple people that are deeply unhappy with their lives, but they are happily using some of the mentioned games and media to distract themselves from that fact all day. Then they go to bed and can't sleep, because they are no longer distracted from it.

They're very happy to have those distractions, though. Is that good for long term happiness? Probably not.

drw85··on The PayPal Mafia is taking over America's government
Well, the definition literally says:

'a false, spoken statement about someone which damages that person's reputation, or the making of such a statement'

I guess the distinction is important, because i could make a false statement that is not damaging, like 'swores has a red nose.', which might be a joke and thus is a false statement but not damaging nor slander.

drw85··on The PayPal Mafia is taking over America's government
Slander implies a false statement that caused damages.
drw85··on Bluesky is on the verge of overtaking Threads in all the ways that matter
I agree that ads are basically controlling most of the internet and public discourse now. Like you can't even use normal words in youtube videos anymore, because your video will be less visible/removed.

On the other hand, there are way too many people/accounts/bots out there that don't actually want to talk or discuss something, but spread false information and incite rage and anger. Those need to be moderated even harder than they already are, i think.

drw85··on Dear friend, you have built a Kubernetes
But none of those things are easy. All cloud environments are fairly complex and kubernetes is not something that you just do in an afternoon. You need to learn about how it works, which takes about the same time as using 'simpler' means to do things directly.

Sure, it means that two people that already understand k8s can easily exchange or handover a project, which might be harder to understand if done with other means. But that's about the only bonus it brings in most situations.

drw85··on The guy who gave a negative review to Battlezone 98 Redux after playing 8k hours
I think that has no bearing on the boredom factor.

I love creative games, but each one will make me bored and burned out after a while. Then i take a break and do something else for a while and maybe the itch comes back later and i'll give it another go.

Even the procedurally generated stuff today is so limited in the variety of it. Yeah, there might be a billion planets in something like No Mans Sky or Elite Dangerous, but they're not very interesting to visit and mostly rather similar.

I'm sure this will improve, but it's very hard to make something believable and interesting on a small detailed scale.

drw85··on Windows 2022 Servers Unexpectedly Upgrading to 2025
This once again highlights how bad the ecosystem with 3rd party tools used for basic system maintenance in the MS environment is. And how much companies and admins rely/depend on those.

I don't really understand why there are so many commercial third party tools being used to do basic things. But they cost a good amount of money and cause a lot of problems.

drw85··on School is Not Enough: Learning is a consequence of doing (2021)
I think AI actually mostly leads to the opposite.

You no longer have to learn anything, you can just ask.

I feel there are also a lot of urban myths about learning and the human brain out there. You hear it all the time everywhere: I’m too old to learn this language/instrument/skill now.

drw85··on AGI is far from inevitable
Except it doesn’t think like anything. It writes like us, if you feed it enough of our writing.
drw85··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Maybe they thought their friend wanted feedback, or something in return.

In that case i would listen to all of it aswell, otherwise i can't give honest feedback.

drw85··on Firefox tracks you with “privacy preserving” feature
This is the usual PR response from the ad industry.

The web existed before ads and was funded by people that cared and were interested in something.

Now it's funded by ad companies and those don't care about anything but sales and have no interest in anything but money.

The useful internet made and used by people with interests and investment on a personal level is mostly dead. Replaced with shovelware and filler content to place intrusive ads around. Content has become the payload for ads, the more the better. Quality doesn't matter anymore, just deliver payloads with ads.

drw85··on The war on remote work has nothing to do with productivity
It's a known fact that in many situations they already have both sides as customers and play them against each other.

They absolutely have the power to move the chess pieces on both sides to guarantee an outcome.
