What is an "ephemeral" model in this context?

This makes me yearn for the golden years of april fools online.
drusepth··on Apple reveals new AI architecture built around Google Gemini models
Before you start driving, at stop lights, while waiting in lines, etc.

I don't know how it works on CarPlay but when I turn my car on I have a bunch of suggested addresses (home, work, parents, recent Maps searches, etc) that I just touch-to-go. Having to use voice every time you want to navigate not only sounds unnecessary, but cumbersome.

drusepth··on The ways we contain Claude across products
Interestingly, as someone who works in story generation and AI-assisted writing specifically measuring "quality" when it comes to generated writing samples, I've found Claude > Gemini > (most non-mainstream models) > OpenAI > Grok.

Also interestingly, this was almost certainly not written by Claude given the style.. and the human writer credits at the bottom.

drusepth··on 32GB of DDR5 now costs $375 – AI shortage continues to squeeze PC building
How are people selling RAM (and GPUs) these days? I have a bunch to offload but Facebook Marketplace and eBay don't sound like they're very great for small, very expensive ($1-3k) electronics...
drusepth··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
Hmmm. I have a game on steam that has almost entirely AI-generated graphics (and AI-generated animations/code that move them), but we pay someone to do our promotional videos. Wonder if something like this would tag the video as AI-generated or not.
drusepth··on Gemini Omni
Weirdly phrased, but yes, I would watch a movie generated with an LLM by a person passionate about the movie they're creating.

What is the benefit of deleting a PR over just closing it? It seems like closing has the benefit of signaling what kinds of PRs aren't acceptable, which deleting would lose.
drusepth··on Google Cloud fraud defense, the next evolution of reCAPTCHA
Interestingly, only on desktop/Android and not iOS it seems.
drusepth··on How OpenAI delivers low-latency voice AI at scale
Interestingly, that kind of parallels the real world too: if you want a quick and high level answer, talk to someone in person; if you want something detailed and info-dense, get them to write it down.
drusepth··on Waymo in Portland
The entire city shuts down and loses their mind with just a millimeter or two of snow here. Last time we got 0.25 of an inch there were ~9 accidents within a 2-mile span on the highway in the morning, and we just ended up shutting the highway down for the day.

I love Waymo in other cities, but it'd be especially helpful here during the 1 day every other year that we actually get any snow ... if we ever get snow here again.

Stars for me are basically "this might be interesting but I don't have time to look at it now, hopefully I'll think about it later and give it a second look".
drusepth··on GitHub is having issues now
I can't help but wonder if GitHub (and similar code infra providers) are crumbling under 1000x or 10000x load from coding agents.
drusepth··on United Wizards of the Coast
I would wager that a high % of the HN audience are the employers, not the employees.

> Remote Work Protections: Leadership is instituting a mandatory RTO, forcing numerous remote employees across the US to work from a physical office or be forced to resign.

This alone is enough reason for anyone to be up in arms and unionize. Kudos to them for banding together for better working conditions. I hope more big companies follow suit.

> It's literally higher leverage for me to go for a walk if Claude goes down than to write code because if I come back refreshed and Claude is working an hour later then I'll make more progress than mentally wearing myself out reading a bunch of LLM generated code trying to figure out how to solve the problem manually.

Taking more breaks and "not working" during the work day sounds like something we should probably be striving to work towards more as a society.

drusepth··on The Vercel breach: OAuth attack exposes risk in platform environment variables
It's a really common platform for vibe coded sites, as I understand it.
drusepth··on AI-assisted cognition endangers human development?
This is absolutely something to potentially be worried about, but one thing I never see highlighted in critiques of AI-assisted cognition is that some elements of physiology may not actually be biologically necessary if they can be fully supplanted by some replacement (in this case, new tools). I can't traverse as much land on foot as my ancestors did (my muscles are weaker, my endurance is less, etc), but I can travel even further than they could by car/plane/etc.

Nothing about the nature of evolution implies our current cognitive processing is ideal/sacred and shouldn't ever change.

drusepth··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
I'm not sure I agree with this. I don't really want to see someone else's stylistic "warts".

I just want clean, easy-to-read content and I don't care about the person who wrote it. A tool like Grammarly is the difference between readable and unreadable (or understandable and understandable) for many people.

drusepth··on Don't make me talk to your chatbot
> When I worked at Microsoft, it cost over $20 to have a human customer support agent pick up the phone when someone called in for help. That was greater than our product margin. Every time someone called for help, we basically lost the entire profit on that sale, and then some.

This doesn't seem like a bad thing when it comes to aligning incentives (assuming customers actually want a product they don't need help to use).

drusepth··on WebMCP is available for early preview
How is it failed? Just compared to, like, the prevalence of HTML?

I've worked in web dev for almost 20 years. Almost every year has had some kind of work with XML.

drusepth··on Serious vulnerabilities in cloud-based password managers

drusepth··on Messenger.com is no longer available for messaging
No insider info but this seems like two teams combined and one of their (redundant) products got shuttered. Not a typical "shutdown" announcement for a service since it was (AFAIK) just a different interface for the same underlying feature, accessible elsewhere.
drusepth··on Show HN: I built "AI Wattpad" to eval LLMs on fiction
Hard to find the signal in the noise and know what stories I should even read to get a sense of baseline quality; partially because that's just a hard problem inherent to floods of any content, but also because the recommendation system seems to lack enough data (and also might be weighting the wrong things, e.g. the rank #1 story is also the lowest-rated...).

A very cool idea in theory and something very hard to pull off, but I think in order to get the data you need on how readable each story is you'll need to work on presentation and recommendation so those don't distract from what you're actually testing.

drusepth··on Putting Gemini to Work in Chrome
Right now I paste screenshots of AWS/Azure/GCP into Claude and ask it questions on how to navigate around / what to do / how to set things up. This seems like a much better experience solely to not have to deal with the weird mac screenshot UX.

Why are you worried about that world? Is it because you expect science to progress too fast, or too slow?

drusepth··on Prism
Does "as it is currently used" include what this apparently is (brainstorming, initial research, collaboration, text formatting, sharing ideas, etc)?
drusepth··on Qwen3-Max-Thinking
I'm not sure this is true... we heavily use Gemini for text and image generation in constrained life simulation games and even then we've seen a pretty consistent ~10-15% rejection rate, typically on innocuous stuff like characters flirting, dying, doing science (images of mixing chemicals are particularly notorious!), touching grass (presumably because of the "touching" keyword...?), etc. For the more adult stuff we technically support (violence, closed-door hookups, etc) the rejection rate may as well be 100%.

Would be very happy to see a source proving otherwise though; this has been a struggle to solve!
