droopyEyelids··on Ask HN: What API or software are people using for transcription?
I was surprised to find my old PC with a GTX1080 could transcribe/diarize about 10x faster than my m1 Mac. If anyone reading this is looking to transcribe 100s of hours of audio, do the extra work to get it set up on desktop with a dedicated graphics card.

droopyEyelids··on The Small World of English
It said the path between “double lock” and “dislodge” was a tortured 10 word chain, it seems like you could get there much faster

“Double lock” > “clasp” > “grab” > “dislodge”

It’s just a quick example, but I think it follows their “rough synonym“ style connections, and it’s not less reasonable than the examples.

To me, it feels like this project is kind of hampered by not having a rigorous definition of what is allowable, and then mixing in the sort of random effects of an LLM

droopyEyelids··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
If they're fixing all the little bugs that should give everyone much more time to think about product design and do the research.
droopyEyelids··on Revenge of the Chickenized Reverse-Centaurs
Unfortunately, unionization is not “coming back with a vengeance” in the United States and it is not allowed to by our laws.

Our laws ban: sector unionization, sympathy and general strikes, and secondary boycotts.

On top of that, we have a very narrow definition of employee, an employers can permanently replace striking workers. The right to strike can even be taken away with a mandated cooling off period.

Even having one of those factors can hamstring unionization in a country, so they’re pretty much never going to “come back with a vengance” here

I think we need to be careful with the language like “this is what the users want” when something along the lines of “this is what triggers of pattern of compulsive behavior in users” is closer to the truth

droopyEyelids··on "Upgrade" has become the most frightening word in the English language (2016)
The store might want to know that but not the cashier. “Did you find everything ok?” is small talk and if you try and answer it’ll be as jarring as if you gave a real answer to a stranger who asks “hows it going”

Do you believe the ease with which a service can be used influences the amount of people who use that service?

Like with marginal users?

droopyEyelids··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
It’ll be nice if an institution finally decides to oppose some of the recent government overreach.

It’s really shocking to see an institution in our country take action that is not in its immediate financial best interest (assuming this letter translates to an action)

droopyEyelids··on AI companions are final stage of digital addiction, and lawmakers are taking aim
(Not an AI stan) I would like to see the evidence that the AI contributed to the suicide.

Without seeing the evidence this feels like a cynical attempt to make political hay out of a tragedy.

The person whose AI companion forms their most important social connection is already not doing well psychologically. And from what I’ve seen, they only offer salubrious advice.

droopyEyelids··on Flying Somewhere? You May Need That Real ID.
Many of the most wealthy and powerful people in the country hate the government and try to sabotage it or suborn it, so its not surprising when the quality of government services suffers.
droopyEyelids··on MSU study finds number of US nonparents who never want children is growing
As humans, our culture and personal beliefs guide how we interpret things in our lives.

Depending on your views, the same childrearing experience can be noble and beautiful, or senseless and ugly.

It seems to be a relatively new development that theres cultural support for interpreting childrearing as horrible.

droopyEyelids··on Vit D supplementation to prevent acute resp infections: review and meta-analysis
Those last two are not actually related.

This review was about testing supplementation of vitamin D, what you posted is mostly about correlation between serum levels and health outcomes, and those levels are largely about non-supplemented “natural” vitamin d.

The distinction is important because science has been trying to figure out whether vitamin d itself has the benefits, or if it is a marker for a larger salubrious process.

droopyEyelids··on Recent AI model progress feels mostly like bullshit
I think you might be caught up in a bit of the rationalist delusion.

People -only!- draw conclusions based on personal experience. At best you have personal experience with truly objective evidence gathered in a statistically valid manner.

But that only happens in a few vanishingly rare circumstances here on earth. And wherever it happens, people are driven to subvert the evidence gathering process.

Often “working against your instincts” to be more rational only means more time spent choosing which unreliable evidence to concoct a belief from.

droopyEyelids··on What's in that bright red fire retardant? No one will say, so we had it tested
It's a doomscroller-brained comment, confusing the PFAS fire retardant foams used on military bases with this ammonium phosphate made from mined Phosphorite rock.

I don't think you intended to be that specific, but the developers don't make any decisions at the level of "releasing a server component" thats an upper management/production leader decision.
droopyEyelids··on The Steam Deck is software-freedom friendly
Local multiplayer on steam is borderline unusable.

A software engineer can (temporarily) get it working after hours of diagnosis.

Compare that to the switch.

droopyEyelids··on How Google built its Gemini robotics models
